Terminology: use your understanding of prefixes and root words to make sense of the following: Monomers: (mono- one) – this is the term we use to call the general
building blocks of each biomolecule.
Polymers: (poly- many)- this is a general term we use to indicate the chain of monomers strung together
Dehydration synthesis: dehydration (de-without) (hydro- water) (synthesis- building)- this is the term used to explain the process of building of polymers from monomer units by taking away water.
Hydrolysis: (hydro- water) (lysis- breaks apart)- this is the term used to explain the process of breaking down polymers into monomers by adding water.
CHEMISTRY REVISTED: Which elements do the following functional groups contain:
Hydroxyl group-
Carboxyl group-
Amino group-
How many bonds do the following elements make: Hydrogen- Carbon-
Oxygen- Nitrogen-
CHEMISTRY REVISTED: Which elements do the following functional groups contain:
Hydroxyl group- Hydrogen & Oxygen
Carboxyl group- Carbon, Oxygen, and Hydrogen
AmiNo group- Nitrogen, Hydrogen
How many bonds do the following elements make: Hydrogen- Carbon-
Oxygen- Nitrogen-
Activity: BiomoleculesCarbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins & Nucleic AcidsDO NOW: What do you know about:
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Proteins
- Nucleic Acids
- All of these are ORGANIC. What does that mean?
- Are they living or nonliving? How do you know (what are the characteristics of life)?
- What role do they have in the body?
- Why do you think they are considered biomolecules?
- What do they look like? (Structurally) and how is their structure related to their function?
ORGANIC BIOMOLECULES& Living/Nonliving Organic means: THEY CONTAIN CARBON.
AND THEY ARE CONSIDERED…….NONLIVING
WHY?????
Because they don’t show all characteristics of life:
- Cells - growth - reproduction - heredity (DNA/RNA)
- Evolve - reponse to stimuli - homeostasis
ISOMERS, DEHYDRATION SYNTHESIS AND HYDROLYSIS
ISOMERS: SAME CHEMICAL FORMULA, DIFFERENT STRUCTURAL ARRANGEMENT
EXAMPLE: GLUCOSE, FRUCTOSE, GALACTOSE
