Understanding Biomass Heating• Broad range of fuel types, predominately wood

chips, pellets and firewood logs• Work in conjunction with other renewables, such as

Solar Photovoltaics • Systems normally fire once or twice daily, heating a

‘reservoir’ of water in a thermal store• Works with existing heating such as radiators or

under-floor heating or a mix of both• Biomass works best when used continually, rather

than cycling on and off; as a result, biomass boilers can be up to 70% smaller output than fossil fuel boilers

• With efficiency ratings of 90% and over (for pellet systems) and 70% and over (for chip systems)

• Installations can be fitted in most locations, replacing plant or being easily incorporated into the construction of new premises

• Installations typically last longer, between 20-25 years

Biomass Fuel TypesWood chips

•Produced from both virgin and ‘clean waste’ timber, retaining a bulk energy density of about 35% of solid wood.

•Wood used in combustion equipment must meet relevant quality standards, while criteria such as maximum size, absence of slivers and maximum moisture content

Wood pellets

•Predominately made from dry wood fibre, compressed under high pressure and extruded through a die. Pellets come in a range of sizes; for domestic and relatively small-scale systems 6-8mm is typical, while larger systems use 10-12mm.

•Wood pellets should be dry, clean and mechanically robust with an ash content and maximum length in accordance with appropriate standards.

Firewood

•Burning characteristics are less crucial in heating systems than in open fires - provided logs are of a suitable size to fit in the firebox, feed hopper or grate, selection is relatively straightforward.

Biomass Sustainability• Produces heat through burning plant-

derived fuel (predominantly wood, but also straw and grains)

• Biomass is ‘Carbon Lean’ - while the burning process still releases CO2, this is directly proportional to the amount of carbon absorbed by the crop during the growing process, creating a ‘virtuous circle’

• Biomass benefits; reduction of waste and diversion of materials from landfill, reduced exposure to fees under climate change legislation, improves UK biodiversity via the use of using UK produced fuel, creates rural jobs, improves UK fuel security
