THE BENEFITS OF BIOMASSAs one of the most economical, sustainable and reliable energy sources, biomass is a well-established and mature renewable energy solution.

SUBSTANTIAL SAVINGSBiomass can save you up to 50% compared to oil and can often provide savings against mains gas. We take your business use, size and location into account to design a bespoke system that not only runs at optimum efficiency and output, but maximises cost savings and ROI.

RHI PAYMENTSUnder the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)1 you get guaranteed, index-linked payments for the heat you generate for 20 years. This makes for an impressive ROI, with many biomass systems paying for themselves in less than five years.

ENERGY SECURITYBiomass is a way of breaking your dependence on fossil fuels acting as a buffer against potential future supply issues and price fluctuations.

A SEAMLESS SWITCHBiomass is a direct replacement for oil and gas and like these fuels it can be used as and when needed. It can also be easily integrated to work alongside existing systems. What’s more, our specialist experts will project manage the whole process, providing the support you need to make switching simple.

CARBON REDUCTIONSWood-fuelled biomass is virtually carbon neutral, helping you meet carbon reduction targets and reduce Climate Change Levy (CCL) charges. You will have a secure renewable asset: clean, safe and low-cost energy that helps meet efficiency targets – and positions your business as a sustainable leader in its sector.

A COMPETITIVE EDGEBy protecting your energy costs with biomass, you gain a competitive advantage over those still relying on traditional fuel sources. It also allows you to communicate a positive environmental message to your stakeholders.

1. The RHI is available in the UK (including Northern Ireland). From 2016 The Republic of Ireland is expected to also benefit from a similar financial incentive scheme.

Our nationwide maintenance team is available 24/7, providing out of hours technical support and remote monitoring for full peace of mind.

FINANCINGIf you do not have the capital investment upfront, we provide a fully funded ESCo (Energy Services Company) model. This covers the cost of your biomass heating system, allowing you to pay for metered heat (per kWh) while benefitting from on-going cost and carbon savings.

NATIONWIDE FUEL SUPPLYThanks to our nationwide network of depots across the UK, we can provide top-quality virgin or recycled biomass fuel (woodchip or pellet) directly to your business whenever you need it. All our wood is moisture content controlled and sustainably sourced from well-managed UK woodland, which is continuously replanted for a fully carbon-neutral process.

AWARD-WINNING STANDARDSMarking our commitment towards a greener future, we’re part of an elite group of companies in the UK that have been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard (CTS), which recognises real achievements in carbon reduction and operational sustainability.

INDUSTRY-LEADING ACCREDITATIONSAt Flogas Renewables, we’re proud to uphold the very highest industry standards in every area of our business. We’re independently accredited to ISO Quality, Environmental and Safety standards – providing our customers with total peace of mind.

RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE (RHI)

To meet the government’s stringent carbon reduction targets, 12% of the UK’s heating needs to come from renewable sources by 2020. The RHI1 was introduced to support this objective and significantly increase the uptake of renewable heating technologies. It provides businesses with guaranteed, index-linked payments for 20 years – rewarding you for each unit (kWh) of renewable heat that you generate.

EARN WHILE YOU BURNIn addition to the energy savings that a biomass system will deliver, RHI payments make the business case for biomass even stronger. With long-term guaranteed payments, payback periods are significantly reduced, and you benefit from an impressive return on investment.

CASE STUDYBACKGROUND: Castle Ashby, an off-grid country estate in Northamptonshire, needed to find a renewable heat solution that the whole village could benefit from. Previously relying on individual fossil fuel systems, the estate owners wanted to reduce emissions and maintenance costs – and free up valuable space being taken up by oil tanks in tenants’ homes.

SOLUTION: Flogas Renewables specified a biomass district heating system to efficiently and cost-effectively meet the needs of 73 separate properties on the estate. The new system is made up of two central biomass boilers (540kW and 400kW) and is fuelled by woodchip produced on the Castle Ashby Estate.

RESULTS:

CO2 REDUCTION: APPROX. 625 TONNES/YEAR

ANNUAL HEAT OUTPUT: 2,500,000 KWH

A LOWER-CARBON OUTLOOK In a bid to tackle climate change, the government aims to achieve an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. To ensure carbon reduction targets are met, schemes are in place for larger emitters.

CRC ENERGY EFFICIENCY SCHEME The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly Carbon Reduction Commitment), requires organisations using more than 6,000MWh of electricity per year to measure and report their annual carbon emissions and buy allowances for each tonne of carbon emitted. As a zero-carbon fuel, incorporating biomass into your business’ energy mix can dramatically reduce its CRC costs.

ENERGY SAVINGS OPPORTUNITY SCHEME (ESOS) ESOS is a mandatory programme of energy audits for the UK’s largest organisations and involves a total review of a business’s energy use at least once every four years, identifying key energy-saving measures that should be employed.

At Flogas Renewables we help you meet targets and legislation, designing bespoke biomass solutions that deliver the very best outputs and efficiencies.

WHAT IS BIOMASS?

HOW IT WORKS

Biomass is a renewable, carbon-neutral fuel (e.g. woodchip or pellets) that is burnt in a biomass boiler to produce heat, hot water or steam. A sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional fossil fuels (e.g. oil, gas), biomass heating systems provide long-term energy security whilst significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

FULL FLEXIBILITY

Biomass can also be used as part of a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution to produce electricity, or as part of a District Heating Network. This means you benefit from economies of scale, with different areas of your business serviced by the same efficient and cost-effective biomass solution.

THE PERFECT FUEL FOR…

Biomass systems are an ideal solution for high energy users, particularly those who are off-grid and heavily reliant on costly fossil fuels. The technology is highly efficient and automated and will provide a reliable, future-proof energy supply for your business.

LPG: THE IDEAL BACK-UP

For full peace of mind, Flogas LPG can provide additional back-up for your biomass system. This means whatever the heat demand, you can rely on a consistent and reliable energy supply that meets the needs of your business.

RENEWABLE INTEGRATION

As well as providing a standalone energy source, biomass can also be used in conjunction with other renewables to maximise savings and boost your sustainability credentials even further. At Flogas Renewables, we offer a complete selection of renewable options – including solar PV systems and ground source air source heat pumps – and we’ll work with you to find the best combination for your business.
