SYNOPSIS This well-researched documentary, with over 120 clips from archival films shot almost exclusively by male film-makers, portrays the domestic and social position of Iranian women from 1932 to the 1979 revolution. The patriarchal family, love and deception, unwanted pregnancies and abortions, arranged marriages and polygamy form the background to the movie’s central themes of edu- cation, emancipation and the salvation of Iranian women, torn between tradition and modernity. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I want to know more about my ancestors. Hence my fascination with my county’s history and the film archives of those who preceded me. I especially wanted to know how women were portrayed in Iranian cinema and men’s attitudes towards them. I watched over 900 works of fiction made before the revolution and found more than 70 subjects regarding women. The movie took over 10 thousand hours of work over a period of more than 2 years.
