SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Walton Walker Collection covers the years 1912-1950, fromwhen Walker was a West Point Cadet, until his death in Korea. Itconsists of several series: Correspondence, official documents,photographs, maps, scrapbooks, and printed materials.The material is grouped by series, and arranged in chronologicalorder within each series. There is also some separated material(scrapbooks and oversized) that is catalogued with the collectionas well.
The bulk of the material covers the XX Corps and the EuropeanTheater of Operations in World War II. There is some miscellaneouscorrespondence, but on the whole, personal correspondence is thin.The printed materials range over the whole of Walker's career, fromWest Point memorabilia to contemporary news accounts of action inKorea. The scrapbook collection covers this span as well. Alsopresent are newspapers, magazines, miscellaneous memorabilia, andtwo boxes of artifacts, mostly flags, from Walker's career.
Of particular interest to the researcher is the extensiveamount of photographs embodied in the Walk.er Collection. There areover 1,100 European Theater of Operations photos arranged by dateand city. Also represented are all of Walker's post-WWIIassignments, and there are some from the Korean fronts as well.There are numerous photographs of many important military figuresof this period, including George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower,George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, Chester Nimitz, Omar Bradley, J.Lawton Collins, and Louis Johnson, among others.The total number of photographs approaches 4,000.
There is also a wealth of material concerning the XX Corps and3rd Army operations in Europe, 1944-5. Examples include afteraction reports from the battalion to Army level, operational maps,command post documents, printed unit histories, and manuscriptaccounts of combat and training events.
