INTRODUCTION

Page 3: Biofuels

What is the alternative

Page 4: Biofuels

Use of biofuels make environment clean By regulating the carbon dioxide By maintaining carbon cycle Making a way to reduce global warming.

e.g.Crop of plant used for the production of one barrel

biofuels will absorb the exact amount of carbon dioxide which is produced by that one barrel bio fuel.

Why biofuels

Page 5: Biofuels
Page 6: Biofuels

What are biofuels Biofuels are the substitute of the fossil fuel

and can be produced from various agricultural crops , plants and animal wastes.

It is considered as the alternative Source of energy.

Classification of biofuels

First generation biofuelsorConventional biofuels

2nd generation biofuelsorAdvance biofuels

Made from sugar ,starch and vegetable oil.

Bio alcohols . Biodiesel biogas

Produced from sustainable feed stock.

Cellulosic ethanol Bio methanol Wood diesel

Page 8: Biofuels

Biofuels can be produced from plants which contains starch and carbohydrate by using conventional methods.

Bioethanol can be produced by the fermentation of the starch from the basic feed stock.

Renewable energy resource . Reduce the green house gases.

Fuel spills are more easily biodegraded or diluted to non-toxic concentration.

Any plant can be used for production of bioethanol : it only has to contain sugar and starch

Advantages of bioethanol

Page 13: Biofuels

Large amount of arable land is required to grow crops, natural habitats would be destroyed.

Due to lucrative prices of bioethanol, some farmers may sacrifice food crops for biofuels which will increase food prices around the world.

During production of bioethanol, huge amount of carbon dioxide is released

Disadvantages of bioethanol

Page 14: Biofuels

MAIN CONCERNSSome countries have limited water sources (cultivation)A suitable climate is needed to grow most crops. Crops grown for biodiesel use land for food crops.

DILEMMA

Limited natural resources CROP

food

competition

biofuels

question

have biofuels really cause the food crisis ?

Food security and biiofuels

Page 17: Biofuels

Biofuels should be produced without effecting the environment or substituting food crop land.

Cultivation of jatropha should be encourged because it is capable of growing in harsh conditions.

Commercialize Second and Future /Third Generation Biofuels – from Cellulose and Algae (Non-food source)

Strategy for bio fuel production.
