Presentation at the "Berliner Bibliothekswissenschaftliches Kolloquium" at the Berlin School of Library and Information Science, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (http://www.ibi.hu-berlin.de/school), January 17th 2012 (Slides in German)
Natural history museums and botanical gardens hold vast amounts of scientific descriptions and specimen related to the world’s biodiversity in their libraries, archives and collections. But most of this biodiversity heritage information is not easily accessible for scientists and the general public. Thus European natural history institutions are digitising this information in the context of EC projects and global initiatives. They are making them available online through Europeana and other expert systems and services like the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. The presentation will give an introduction to biodiversity heritage information, the corresponding infrastructure and services. It will also elaborate on the user groups and how they can benefit from this information ecology.
