ro sesslon BTLI FRTSELL'S §OtO O]I ''EYIDE]ICE" - A GUlrAR TRA]ISCRIPTTO]I by loe Dennison ill Frisell's improvisation on Thelonious Monk's "Evidence," as recorded on Paul Motian's Monk In Motian (lMT 83442L-L), is a fine example of the Suitarist's versatility and unique sound. Because the ensemble on this recording date has no bassist or pianist, Frisell solos in a manner that more explicitly defines the harmony and form of thé song. He often arpeggiates (measures 6, 8, 35), plays low roots of chords (m. 13, zg, 4s-47), frequently plays important harmonic tones on strong beats, and mixes chordal and single-line playrng throughout. By playing recurring ideas and referring to Monk's melody, Frisell unifies the solo and clarifies the song's AABA form. Measures 5-7 reappear in bars zg-Bl, ST-gg, 47, and 63. Frisell mirrors the melody in these places, as in measures 52-56 and 64, where he also recalls Monk's distinctive chord voicings. *rn"tpt.J6r Xoiftx h1 1t I 3' 'l Bb^1 u1 A.b^11 n G:I tb, (c^'t) 58 DOWN BEAT MAY 1989
