ill Frisell's improvisation on Thelonious Monk's "Evidence," as recorded onPaul Motian's Monk In Motian (lMT 83442L-L), is a fine example of theSuitarist's versatility and unique sound.

Because the ensemble on this recording date has no bassist or pianist,Frisell solos in a manner that more explicitly defines the harmony and form of thé song.He often arpeggiates (measures 6, 8, 35), plays low roots of chords (m. 13, zg, 4s-47),frequently plays important harmonic tones on strong beats, and mixes chordal andsingle-line playrng throughout.

By playing recurring ideas and referring to Monk's melody, Frisell unifies the solo andclarifies the song's AABA form. Measures 5-7 reappear in bars zg-Bl, ST-gg, 47, and63. Frisell mirrors the melody in these places, as in measures 52-56 and 64, where healso recalls Monk's distinctive chord voicings.
