A branding and identity brief based on an independant bike repairshop with a focus on print.

With this brief I was initially aiming to develop my skills in photography, iconography and editorial design. However, as the brief developed itbecame more appropriate to rebrand the business instead and focuson the branding.

Through research into the science of bikes and bike anatomy I aimed to explore di!erent printed formats and deliverables to create a speci"cand appropriate range over delverables.

Range. To begin with I wanted to brand a publication that would focus on thescience of bikes and their ‘biology’ which the name of the shop comesfrom. This changed however as their are already so many good articlesand magazines doing the same or similar things.

Looking at bike blogs and cycling cult folllowings I was inspired toredirect my designs towards creating a range of useful products thatthe shop could use on a daily basis as well as sell to customers. The aimbeing that customers would use the products whilst out on their bikesor doing other leisurely activties and people will see the brand more asthe shop is quite low key.

The range includes:

- a bound cyclist journal - a shop zine to detail the business aims and services - a branded publication which features articles on lowkey cycling events and stories - a pencil - a note pad - a bike smiths cleaning cloth - general shop business and address cards

Skills development. This brief has been a great development in rationalising the work I’ve setout to do and making critical choices about my practice. I started it earlyon alongside 3 other briefs but about half way throuhg it fell to the sidesomewhat and I had to pick it up again quite a while after. This greatlya!ected the outcome but really pushed me to make crucial desicions.

Besides this, I have had the opportunity to look more at print "nishesand product printing. Looking speci"cally at types of embossing andpaper crafted products. The further into the brief I got the more I foundthat working with paper was a vital element to my choices.

Additional deliverables.

In addition to the initial range I’ve deisgned a cyclists raw journal for their travel notes and sketches. They will be available to purchase in theshop and alternatively they can be handed out as promotional gifts tocustomers.

Finally I’ve proposed a workmans cloth that will have the logo on for the sta! at Bikology to use to clean their hands, polish bikes and so on.
