bIkENIGHtEVERY THURSDAY!
Once you have narrowed your motorcycle down to the style and type you want, it is time to start looking for the right bike. When it comes to used bikes there is much to consider. This month we are including a short lesson in used bike inspection to help minimize your chances of getting taken.
Take some simple hand tools with you, including a flashlight and, if possible, a multimeter. Keep in mind rule 1 is that if the seller does not want you to inspect the bike, the n we suggest you walk away. To start typical chains should have around ¾” of play (up and down) and the teeth of the sprocket should not show obvious damage or wear. Side to side movement should also be limited on a good set. With someone sitting on the motorcycle,. Chains wear out with use, but sprockets typically last much longer. A severely worn sprocket is an indicator of an old sprocket or of poor maintenance. Tires should have good tread all the way across the surface with no signs of uneven wear or damage. Daily drivers’ tires will often have more wear in the middle on the tread
indicating more highway driving. Motorcycle tires belonging to more aggressive riders will show more wear at the edge of the tread.
Observe the condition of brake and clutch levers, bar-end weights, straightness of the bars and instrument cluster. These could show signs of an accident or drop. Continue by looking for scratched engine cases, foot pegs or exhaust pipes. Inspect the fork tubes for signs of rust, pitting and oil. These are signs of worn fork seals, and possibly expensive tepairs in the near future. Hold the handbrake and bounce the front suspension. It should feel even and firm. While checking the forks, run a fingernail across the brake rotors. Feel for uneven wear or grooving. Look into the brake caliper to see how much of the pads are left. Inspect the wheel rim for dents or other damage. If the bike has spokes, check the overall condition of the individual spokes.

Be realisticwhen negotiating on the final price
of the bike.
Put the bike on its center stand or hold it upright. Turn the bars side to side. Feel for any ‘notchy-ness’ or roughness in the steering head. Check the frame remove the seat to see underneath it also. There should be no dents, kinks or visible damage to the frame. Frame damage for most would indicate time to walk away.
Access the battery, clip a multi-meter onto the battery terminals and check the voltage. You want no less than 12 volts not running.Start the engine. The meter should read no more than 14 volts while running. If it does, that may be a sign of a ‘questionable’ voltage regulator and may result in battery overcharging and cause it to fail.
Remove and inspect under any fairings or covers used to change spark plugs and do routine maintenance. Check the frame for fatigue at the weld points. Inspect the general condition of the engine block, plugs, and radiator (if equipped). Check for leaks around the oil filter and oil pan bolt. With the engine off, check the lights and indicators.. Pull a fuse or two out and check for corrosion along with battery terminals and overall appearance of the battery. Using a flashlight (never a match or lighter), open the fuel tank and check for signs of rust or corrosion. Check the brake fluid level and pull hard on the front brakes and release while watching the fluid level. It should fall and rise quickly once the brake is released.
Take a test drive. Gear up properly and choose a familiar route with light traffic and good road conditions. Get used to the way the bike feels and responds. Carefully test the brakes. If they pulse, the bike should be inspected for warped disks. Proper brakes should engage smoothly and not grab violently or feel spongy. As you continue, accelerate through the gears. The transmission should feel firm and not slip out of gear or feel ‘clunky’. While on a straight patch of road, weave left and right slightly to see how the bike responds. It should feel stable and easy to correct. Note any unusual engine noises, suspension creaking, rattling or any undue vibrations. Ask questions about anything you have doubts about.
After the ride, look for any leaks or drips. Check the oil keeping in mind that most semi or full synthetic oils will darken after only a few miles. That is completely normal. Request a service history if available. Ask for an owner’s manual and factory tool kit if available. Be realistic when negotiating on the final price of the bike. For a private seller, this may be his baby. If at a dealership, realize that the salesperson may have a boss looking over his shoulder. Do some research online; use the retail pricing guides if available to get a fair market value of the bike. Then, set your buy price accordingly.

The one thing that is certainly true about motorcycle events is that you cannot beat mother nature, and after weeks of blazing hot weather mother nature decided she needed a bath and so came the rain. Destination was a first time Rally put on by 2 area industry veterans. These ladies set the stage for a great weekend with tons of live entertainment including GENEvA, 2 sites with venders and free biker parking, but no matter what they or anyone else could have done this Rally was washed out by aggressive rain that caused sinkholes and a raging river. Despite it all those that stick it out (including me) had a great time! Take a look at the pictures and judge for yourself. Rumor is that these gals are going to do it again in the spring... so get ready here they come!

If you have been present at our bike nights and events, you may have noticed that we gave out NASCAR tickets as prizes. Courtesy of Greg Thomas, a Great Clips franchise owner. I was fortunate enough to run into Greg at the Tilted Kilt in John’s Creek and began talking about events and promotions. We came to an agreement that we would promote the race in exchange for tickets. This came to be a big hit as most of our readers are huge fans. The race itself was a great time and very affordable thanks to the free tickets. I can’t wait till next year!

Wheels for Mercy Ride & Bike Show. September 11, 2010Saturday September 11th was a great day in Pickens County. R&R Trikes and Bikes hosted one of the best benefit events I have attended all year. Starting early at 8am, a memorial ceremony was held for our fallen troops and service members from theSeptember 11, 2001 World Trade Center tragedy. The Cherokee High School Honor Guard presented the colors that were flown at half mass all day in honor of those fallen.Shortly after the ceremony, a prayer was said and registration for the ride began. The registration process went flawlessly as a result of the group effort by Pickens Masonic Lodge#220, F&AM, and Jasper Chapter #479 Order of Eastern Star. At 10am, we all lined up for the beautiful 55 mile ride through the mountains, escorted by Jasper City Police and Pickens County Sherriff’s Department. With oncoming traffic pulling off to the side of the road for the ride procession, it was quite an amazing feeling of honor to be part of the ride for our hero’s. After the ride, the bands and grills fired up and the day just kept getting better. I look forward to next year’s events! Great job guys and thank you for letting Biker 101 be a part of such a special day.
Just announced…Motorcycle fatalities dropped 16 percent in
2009 Federal officials reported last month that motorcycling
deaths in the United States dropped by 16 percent in 2009
compared to the previous year. The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported motorcycling fatalities in
2009 decreased for the first time in more than a decade, dropping
to 4,462 in 2009 from 5,312 in 2008. Federal officials said traffic
deaths involving all vehicles nationwide fell 9.7 percent in 2009, from
37,423 in 2008 to 33,808. The figure is the lowest since 1950. Traffic
safety officials said that the decrease may be due to increased seat belt use, tougher
enforcement of drunk driving laws and improved vehicle safety features. According to
NHTSA figures, motorcycling fatalities have decreased from 1980 to 1997 -- but then
fatalities increased steadily for 11 years. 2,294 motorcyclists were killed in 1998, and
the number of fatalities rose each subsequent year, reaching 5,312 in 2008.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is overseeing a four-year, $3 million
OSU study, which is the first major research on the subject in 30 years. The last major
study into the causes of motorcycle crashes was issued in January 1981. We look
forward to their findings.

Harley Plays “Hard Ball” With its Unions
Helmet Saves Golfer
Paul Azinger
Recovering
Azinger recovering from crash injuries PGA Tour player Paul Azinger, captain of the winning U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2008, is recovering from serious injuries from a motorcycle crash last week in Bradenton FL. Reportedly riding his 2010 BMW motorcycle, he was hit in early September by a woman that was makeing a left turn after stopping at a stop sign. Azinger was wearing a helmet, was taken to a Bradenton hospital. The unnamed woman was issued a citation for violation of right of way.
Harley-Davidson Inc. agreed last month to keep open its Wisconsin factories, after
gaining the cost savings it needed when union members agreed to a new concession-
laden contract. The Motor Co. had threatened to move production and 1350 jobs
to another state if the unions rejected the deal. “Change is never easy, and we have
asked our employees to make difficult decisions. However, we are pleased to be
keeping production operations in our hometown of Milwaukee and in Tomahawk,”
company President and Chief Executive Keith Wandell said in a statement.
A number of workers who voted to approve the deal said they did so grudgingly,
accepting Harley’s ultimatum for the sake of saving jobs. Others said they voted
against it because the terms were too harsh. Harley said it had to play hardball
because its labor costs at the two plants were too high. The concessions made the
costs more manageable, so it now makes sense to keep the plants open.
In an interesting twist …. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced 4 days
after the agreements were reached that Harley-Davidson Inc. will receive $25
million in state tax credits for keeping its factories in Wisconsin. Other states had been wooing Harley with generous incentives and promised lower labor costs. The package gives Harley tax credits in exchange for keeping jobs in Wisconsin the Commerce Department officials said. Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle said state officials worked closely with Harley-Davidson.

Starting in early September, Earl Small’s HD is under “new” ownership. I put new in quotations because there isn’t anything “new” about it, except on paper. The owner, Mark Hulsey, has actually been part of the dealership since 1986. I had the honor of sitting with Mr. Hulsey and getting the true “101” scoop. It all started five years ago when Mr. Small began talking of retirement. As a long time friend and employee, working in every area of the dealership, Mr. Hulsey was the perfect candidate for new ownership. As we sat and discussed the past, present and future of ESHD, I asked the question “What are your plans for the company?” Mr. Hulsey thought for a moment and replied that they are planning a few small renovations or a possible relocation in the next few years, but nothing too soon. As for now, the used motorcycle showroom is in a separate building next door. I thought that this was extremely unique from a consumer standpoint. If I were looking to purchase a used bike, I would feel better in a used showroom talking to someone specializing in older models; with no pressure to step outside my budget for a new motorcycle. When I asked about sales, Mr. Hulsey said that he was very content with how they were going and is willing to do whatever
it takes to satisfy the customer. “The biggest point of a sale is the relationship”, he said. “In the beginning most customers are dreamers, it’s our goal to convert that dream into a reality. A Harley dealership isn’t just about selling motorcycles, it’s about selling a lifestyle.” When I walked in the door I still noticed the warm welcome from the staff, all with great attitudes and smiles. The longer I was in the dealership the more comfortable I felt, unlike other places where you feel pressure to buy something. As I explored the area, I noticed more things with character, like the comfortable waiting areas and the performance driven parts area. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. All you dedicated customers out there don’t worry, you can still come in and get the same great service you have always gotten at ESHD. In fact, two new Harley Master Technicians have been brought on staff to ensure the quality and service you have always received. And the same friendly faces that you have known and loved are still here.

While I had been down to Angel City for other events, the 2010 Angel City Fall Rally was my first, and I can guarantee I will be back! For those of you that don’t know - Angel City is a western style town built for bikers just off I-75 in Unadilla GA. Its streets come alive 2 times per years complete with 4 bars and restaurants and shops filled with venders offering bike parts, leather, jewelry, clothes, tattoos, motorcycles and much more. The town center features a large covered pavilion complete with a stage where the music, fun and biker games start early, run late and are enthusiastically hosted by the event MC referred to as Top Hat! Surrounding the entire city is a carnival of bikers from every walk of life. Some in tents, some in million dollar buses there is also a section outside the city of more food and motorcycle product vendors including motorcycle lights, custom leather goods and much more! Like any city, Angel City has law. In Angel City the law comes in the form of Neon colored shirts with the name “Regulators “across the back, but if you don’t start anything , they won’t. While this group of guardians could probably take down a NFL football team if needed, they are a group of good natured guys that unless needed leave the crowd be and help keep things moving along. At Angel City, people feel safe and protected, not invaded and abused. Thanks guys for doing it the right way!
Angel City is a 21 and up party! In usual biker fashion the attitudes are checked at the gate and the crowd proceeds to letting loose, making new friends, building bonds and creating life memories. In my 3 days at Angel City I can tell you I did all of the above and drank a few beers to boot, but in the fine words of Forrest Gump, “That’s all I have to say about that.’ Set to a background of live music conversation, laughter and revving motorcycles, the thing that makes Angel City awesome is the diversity of the people. I was fortunate enough to be introduced around by my good friend, character and Biker101 Middle GA Manager, David Carmichael (Damn that boy knows everybody!). From the good friends I made sitting around our campsite to the people we met on our nightly golf cart limo tours of the grounds people everywhere were having a good time and met us with positive attitudes and good conversation. I am a people watcher and when not at the camp site, my favorite place to people watch

Bodocks Bar & Grill opened early in 2010 in Canton GA and has quickly become a biker favorite. It can be found on Riverside Parkway in the Ingles shopping center. Bodocks is biker owned and built for the biker crowd as well as anyone else that might like to stop by! You will even see a tire mounted on the ceiling in rememberance of a fallen brothers. My first experience with Bodocks was on a Monday night. While not a big night of the week for any bar, this particular evening there was a birthday party going on for one of the regulars as well as a host of other people eating dinner and enjoying a few end of the day adult beverages. What struck me the most was how at home everyone seemed? The mood was very casual like “Cheers” with a bike twist, and the laughter just roared about the place. Bodocks himself was behind the bar serving them up and his wife Trish hardly had time to spend with us (we were there on business), because she was so busy happily taking care of her customers. In other words...Things were as they should be. Customers were happy, the atmosphere was great and the staff wasn’t taking it for granted! Biker101 has been fortunate enough this year to sponsor The Thursday night bike nights at Bodocks. They put up a live band every bike night and line the parking lot with bikes. Trish and Biker101 Wild Man Chris Teague keep the fun going with tons of giveaways and great music as well. It is arguably the fastest growing bike night in the Canton area and worth a stop on Thursday nights. The food is traditional bar fair and all under $10 with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. It’s good too! The wait staff is easy on the eyes and the dance floor and pool tables are waiting on you. Come on out..We will see you there!
