Bike Delaware County Mapathon What to Bring Your WiFi capable laptop (preferred) or tablet. Your knowledge of local roads How are we doing this? We will be drawing these routes on Wikimapping.com. Wikimapping is an online mapping tool that provides an organized way for several people to work on a mapping project. We suggest taking a look at this 8 minute introductory video before coming to the mapathon http://wikimapping.com/wordpress/gettingstartedvideo/ To begin go to the mapathon project page: http://wikimapping.com/wikimap/DelawareCountyBikeRouteMapathon.html The project map will have the central and western portions of Delaware County divided into several sectors. We will assign one or two people to each sector. Within these sectors are markers showing destination points. Participants will draw routes to “connect the dots” with the goal creating a network of bike friendly roads.

  • Bike Delaware County Mapathon What to Bring

Your Wi-Fi capable laptop (preferred) or tablet. Your knowledge of local roads

How are we doing this? We will be drawing these routes on Wikimapping.com. Wikimapping is an online mapping tool that provides an organized way for several people to work on a mapping project. We suggest taking a look at this 8 minute introductory video before coming to the mapathon http://wikimapping.com/wordpress/getting-started-video/ To begin go to the mapathon project page: http://wikimapping.com/wikimap/Delaware-County-Bike-Route-Mapathon.html The project map will have the central and western portions of Delaware County divided into several sectors. We will assign one or two people to each sector. Within these sectors are markers showing destination points. Participants will draw routes to connect the dots with the goal creating a network of bike friendly roads.

  • Drawing a Route Segment To start follow the prompts to open the map and select Route to enter data. We recommend using the blue line Suggested Routes if you are unsure of the Level of Traffic Stress of the road.

Route segments lines should be divided by road characteristics. We suggest one line per road segment, although you can string together roads with similar qualities (i.e. residential streets). Treat major intersections or barriers such as merging highway ramps as separate segments. When you finish the route segment by double clicking on the line a bubble with a survey will appear. Fill out the information you know about the road. Only speed limit and the number of travel lanes are required. You can look at most streets in Google Street View by dragging the yellow peg man and hovering over your road segment.

  • Whats next? We will take this data and overlay the low stress segments on Google Maps. If time and volunteers allow we may begin the process during the Mapathon using Google Mapmaker [Mapmaker.google.com]. We will also look at all the data including the high stress segments to determine how we can propose improvements for each route to create a seamless low stress bike network in Delaware County.
