Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University

The B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University popularly called University of Bihar was separated from Patna University on 2 January 1952.

Chronology of formation:

The Bihar University Act 1960 bifurcated University of Bihar into three separate entities, i.e. (1) Bihar University, Muzaffarpur (2) Ranchi University, Ranchi (3)Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur.

Later The Bihar University Act 1961 paved the way for Bihar University and Magadh University. Again in 1973 the Bihar University separated into Bihar University in Muzaffarpur and Mithila University in Darbhanga.

Once more in the year 1990 the Bihar University Muzaffarpur was separated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and J.P.University, Chapra.

In 1992 the University was renamed as Babasaheb BhimraoAmbedkar BiharUniversity, Muzaffarpur. Now the university is known as B.R.Ambedkar BiharUniversity, Muzaffarpur.

Bihar Yoga Bharati

The foundation stone of Bihar Yoga Bharti was placed with the Bihar School of Yoga (BSY), founded by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in 1963 to spread the power of Yoga among common man. Through BSY, Swami Ji spread Yoga for people of all age irrespective of creed, cast, culture and religion. Under his expert guidance Yoga was taught on scientific grounds. Several thousand people were taught yoga therapy, yoga teacher training, sannyasa and advanced sadhana (regular yoga practice) courses. Both short term and long term programs were offered. Now BSY is an institution of International reputation for teaching of Yogic Sciences.

After Swami Satyananda Saraswati achieved the stage of kshetra sannyasa in 1988 Swami Niranjanananda was given the responsibility to carry out the work of Swami Satyananda Saraswati.

Swami Niranjanananda developed Ganga Darshan for five years. In 1994 he established Bihar Yog Bharati (BYB). Now BYB is a registered and accredited institution for advanced studies in yogic sciences. It’s a Gurukul based institute and first of its type in the world to impart a comprehensive yogic education.

Lalit Narayan Mithila University

The Lalit Narayan Mithila University in Darbhanga district of Bihar was made possible due to rigorous efforts of Eminent academicians like Dr. Amarnatha Jha, Dr. R.C. Mazumdar, Dr. A. S. Altekar, Dr. Sunit Kumar Chaterjee and many others. These people made demand to the government for establishment of a modern university at Darbhanga. On 27 January 1947 the Mithila University committee was formed; Dr Amarnath Jha was the President of this committee and Pt. Harinath Mishra the General Secretary. The year 1968 was the turning point when a UGC

team visited Darbhanga to find the chances of establishing a multi faculty university here. Following the recommendations of the UGC team the State Government formed a committee to check the administrative and academic structure of a modern University at Darbhanga.

The Government of India formed another committee consisting of Sri T. P. Singh, Secretary Ministry of Education and Social Welfare, Sri. R. K. Chhabra, secretary, U.G.C. and Sri N. D. J. Rao, Education Commissioner, Bihar, to look into the matter. The committee reported that the establishment of a separate and independent University at Darbhanga could be considered on merit. As an outcome the Mithila University was established in Darbhanga under an ordinance in 1972 carving out colleges at Darbhanga division and Kosi division from the then two Universities – Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur respectively.

In 1975 the Mithila University was renamed as Lalit Narayan Mithila University. But it was soon reversed to the original name through an ordinance. Later in 1980, the name Lalit Narayan Mithila University was restored through an ordinance. In 1986 the University got recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC) of India under section 12 (A) of the UGC Act. Since February 1989 the University is getting institutional development grants under section 12(B) of the UGC Act. The Lalit Narayan Mithila University is one of the prime institutions for providing higher education in Bihar. The university conducts various courses through its different faculties and affiliated colleges at graduate, postgraduate, and research level. The university offers hostel facilities for men and women.

Magadh University

The Magadh University is one of the largest institutions for providing higher education in the state of Bihar. The university was established when Government of Bihar passed an act in 1961 and it started functioning from 2 March 1962. At the beginning only seven subjects were introduced. These were: English, Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, Hindi and Philosophy. Dr. K. K. Dutta was the first Vice – Chancellor. He was considered the most distinguished Historians of the country.

Now the Magadh University has 24 Post Graduate Departments, 44 Constituent Colleges and 85 affiliated colleges. A total of 2 thousand teachers are involved in different university departments and colleges for providing instructions. Every year approximately 2 lakh students get enrolled in different university programs viz; graduate, post graduate etc.  The university has jurisdiction over the districts of Gaya, Jehanabad, Patna, Nalanda, Nawada and Aurangabad.

Nalanda Open University

The Nalanda OpenUniversity is situated in Patna, the Capital ofBihar State in India.The University was established in March 1987 and named after the ancient Nalanda University. Patna University

The Patna University was established under an Act of Legislature in 1917. This is first university in Bihar and 7th in India. The university has given the responsibility by the government to administer examinations starting from Matriculation level to Postgraduate level. During its establishment year the University had jurisdiction over Bihar, Orissa and Nepal. In 1952, the Patna University was made a residential University.

From beginning the University has some very well known institutions both professional and non professional attached with it. It has a full-fledged Law College, Teachers’ Training College along with Engineering and Medical Colleges. The University has been a saga of progress, advancement, and excellence in the field of higher education. The University celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1944 and its Golden Jublee (1967), in the year 1970 with the President of India Sri V. V. Giri as the Chief Guest.

At present the University has 9 Faculties, 32 PG Departments, and 11 Colleges to its credit. In 1974 the University established a Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) so as to provide education to those who cannot attend regular university classes. All the departments of the University are attached with a Departmental / Seminar Library. Besides University also has Central Library to offer best of the learning facilities. The Central Library is linked with INFLIBNET. The University also provides residential accommodation to about 50% of its Male Students and all Female Students.

Rajendra Agricultural University

The Rajendra Agricultural University is one of the institutions of national importance for providing education in Agricultural and allied sciences at different levels, viz; certificate, under graduate, postgraduate, and research etc. The University is situated in Samastipur district of Bihar state in India. At the time of establishment on 4 July 2003 it was Imperial Agriculture Research Institute. In 1934 a major earthquake damaged Bihar, the institute building was heavily damaged and the Imperial Agriculture Research Institute was shifted to New Delhi. Later this became Indian Agricultural Research Institute. The remains of Imperial Agriculture Research Institute downgraded further. On 3 December 1970 the Government of India established Rajendra Agricultural University. Since its establishment the university is promised to produce efficient human resources that can benefit the Agriculture of the country.
