WE BEGIN WITHLOVE AND BEAUTY

We can end up anywhere, but we can only begin here: a woman and her child.

From Bellini’s Virgin and Child of the Italian Renaissance to Utamaro's 18th century Japanese print celebrating maternal connection, we can always be reminded that even though centuries and continents may separate us, we all begin at the same point. Explore more mysteries of our common consciousness throughout the museum’s twelve chapters.

NEW YEAR AND NEW LIGHTI was born and grew up in Swe-den, way up in northern Europe. A cold and weather hostile part of the world, many would say. Sometimes you just have to won-der how people ever came up with the idea to settle so far up north in the world. I mean, when the first people reached this cold and harsh land there must have been some consideration. Why they decided to settle here where the temperature is rarely above freez-ing and a good day in the sum-mer you might enjoy 20 degrees Celsius, none knows. Shouldn´t there have been someone saying “Hey, let´s go somewhere a little bit more warm and welcoming”. There must have been something else that attracted them to stay.

A common saying is that “summer is the best day of the year” and that is for a good rea-son. Midsummers Eve is almost a sacred holiday and whatever

nature throws at us we MUST sit outside at least trying to enjoy the arctic winds and weather. Some 5-6 years ago Midsummers Eve was actually colder than Christ-mas eve, but never mind, let´s go outside and get pneumonia and try to get the barbeque going. Pretty strange, I must say.

However, coming to UAE is always a pleasure, and not only for the warm temperatures. Boarding, in sub-zero tempera-ture, the Emirates 380 bound for Dubai just knowing you soon will be in a 30 degree warmth, is just so uplifting. On arrival your soul just fills up with energy and you can look forward to some great days filled with happiness and joy. This is what Dubai does to you, well me at least. Just the notion that you can go out to dinner and don´t have to plan you attire with the utmost care. You don´t have to consider bringing an extra coat

in case it gets chilly nor do you have to do a last minute check on the weather forecast in case you need to bring an extra blanket or even a raincoat. Dubai is always offering the best weather for en-joying a carefree lifestyle.

And if you are planning to drive to your dinner party or event there is never a need to go out 10 minutes before to scrape the ice off the windows or dig out the car from a pile of accumu-lated snow. Although you might have to go out and start the car to get the AC cooling it before leaving but I can live with that. Many friends in UAE say they really want to come to Scandi-navia to experience the winter weather. I say it is highly oversold as a fun and exciting experience.

There is no fun in fighting your way to the letterbox every day through droves of snow and ice. And everytime, before leaving the house, telling your family that if I am not back in 10 minutes please come looking for me.#

Dubai’s water sports season is in full swing and this race is your first chance to see the craft which perhaps best symbolises the city’s combination of heritage and modernity, wooden powerboats with huge engines. See the beautiful boats blasting over the waves at full throttle. The wooden powerboat racing event’s first round will place a number of local sportsmen against each other on the open water. Organisers expect around 15 craft to take part in the three-round event, where the boats compete along Al Sufouh Beach, be-tween the Palm Jumeirah crescent and the Burj Al Arab.#

THE ADDRESS DUBAI MARINAAlong with one of the largest pools in the Marina district at an impressive 50 metres long, The Address Dubai Marina’s elevated infinity pool has the ultimate cosmopolitan setting, with views of the iconic twisted Cayan Tower in the distance and also the heights of Jumeirah Beach. While plenty of interrupted sunshine filters through the surround-ing towers, after sunset is the ideal time to dive into the water and take in the twinkling lights of passing dhow boats in the harbour below, and the bustle of the Marina’s energetic nightlife.

CONRAD DUBAIResort meets rooftop in the Conrad’s Purobeach urban oasis. Hidden from busy Sheikh Zayed Road thanks to lush greenery and tasteful canopies, this collection of pools is perfect for all-day lounging and family fun. Pick your spot from one of the clus-ters of private cocoon beds bordering the water’s edge but be quick, this rooftop is popular with both locals and visitors alike.

SOFITEL DUBAI JUMEIRAH BEACHSofitel’s Infini Pool Lounge has a front-row seat for the Arabian Gulf ’s picture-perfect spectacular sun-sets. Take a seat at the swim-up bar and sip your

drink as you gaze in the coast-to-coast panoramic ocean views. They also serve fabulous lounge mezze platters if you get a bit peckish.

FOUR POINTS BY SHERATON SHEIKH ZAYED ROADWhile it is shallow, this pool makes up for its lack of depth with fantastic city-to-bay views, as seen from an incredible 43 floors up. During the day, light snacks are served right to your sun lounge, with the tempo upping to become a chic bar by night, fre-quented by regulars looking to dance the day off. Perfect for night crawlers who is after a late night dip, the pool and bar are both open until 2am.

INTERCONTINENTAL DUBAI FESTIVAL CITYGuests can keep tabs on the comings and goings of Old Town’s traditional dhows thanks to the Inter-Continental’s Dubai Creek vantage point. While the open-air pool will keep you cool, it’s the transpar-ent glass tank that hangs out from the side of the building that will take your breath away. Hanging 25 metres up in the air, swimmers can take in the scen-ery below, while unsuspected passerbys beneath can check out your backstroke.#

In a society torn apart by discrimi-nation and fear, Othello’s life quickly unravels. Manipulated by Iago, he turns on everything he holds dear. Following a critically acclaimed

Dubai is heaven for car lovers. It is not uncommon to, within just a few moments, see a shiny new Lamborghini Huracàn flying down the highway with a Mercedes AMG on its tail. Ferraris are laying some rubber on the road and the occasional Bentley Continental or Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead cruising along The Walk. A Koenigsegg revs up its impressive supercharged V8 engine out-side one of the many luxury hotels and Corvettes and Vipers are a dime a dozen. Or why not go all in in a McLaren 570s or a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. You are about to turn several heads as you go.But the true experience is to drive one of these engineering masterpieces yourself, right. Regardless if you are fast and loud or tranquile and posh you can rent most exotic cars in Dubai. A handful of companies will cater for your need to drive one of their divine cars. Acclaimed exhibition will explore the history of the Arabian Peninsula through archaeological and cultural artefacts from Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURES

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mo-hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and in partnership with the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Her-itage (SCTH), Louvre Abu Dhabi hosts “Roads of Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia”, the second international exhibition in the museum’s new cultural season. The exhibition will explore the rich history of the Arabian Peninsula through archaeological and cultural artefacts, including a selection of rare pieces from the United Arab Emir-ates.

The exhibition was conceived through cooper-ation between SCTH and the Musée du Louvre in Paris, where it was first exhibited in 2010. It is one of the most renowned Saudi exhibitions on a glob-al scale, introducing Arabia’s cultural and histori-cal heritage to over five million visitors worldwide. The exhibition has presented 14 acclaimed editions throughout Europe, the USA and Asia, sharing the story of this unique region with audiences around the world, before coming to Louvre Abu Dhabi where it will be enriched by selected pieces from the UAE.

“The United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of Sau-di Arabia have always been connected by a common heritage and history,” says H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. “This year’s edition of the exhibition will be a reflection of the rich, shared cul-tural heritage and deep-rooted history between the two nations.”

“Roads of Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia” explores five chapters in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, spanning early prehistoric settlements; maritime exploration; caravan trading routes that linked the region with Asia, Mesopota-mia and the Mediterranean; routes of holy pilgrim-age emerging in the 7th century CE; and the social and economic developments between the 14th and 16th centuries that set the stage for the modern day region.

“The Arabian Peninsula has been a place of ex-change, culture and civilisation since earliest Antiq-uity, and Louvre Abu Dhabi is deeply rooted in the region’s unique history and context,” says Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi. “The exhi-bition is an important opportunity for us to re-ex-amine and celebrate this rich heritage through a re-

markable series of artefacts, expanding on the regional pieces in our permanent collection to tell an Arabian story from a new perspective.”

Jamal S. Omar, Vice President of Antiq-uities and Museums Department at STCH, underscores the significance of the exhibition, given the special relationship between the two neighbouring countries and their shared cultural and historical heritage. It is especial-ly notable, he adds, in that this is the exhibi-tion’s first showing in the Arabian Peninsula outside of Saudi Arabia, shedding light on the ancient civilizations and trade routes of the Arabian Peninsula. The exhibition has been followed closely by His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, President of the STCH, in view of the esteem that Saudi Arabia has for the United Arab Emirates, its rulers and its people. “Although the exhibi-tion focuses on Saudi Arabia’s civilizations, it also highlights the civilizations of the Arabi-an Peninsula including major hubs along the ancient trade routes, which were important links in the cultural and historical narrative of this highly strategic region,” Mr. Omar com-ments.

“From overland camel caravans and mar-itime trading routes to paths walked by reli-

gious pilgrims, the roads of Arabia have always been of vital importance to economic devel-opment, early settlement and the exchange of ideas, customs and cultures across the region and beyond,” says Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Sci-entific, Curatorial and Collection Manage-ment Director at Louvre Abu Dhabi. “These roads are the thread of this exhibition, which presents a journey retracing exchanges, circu-lation and encounters in the Arabian Peninsu-la. Dynamic archaeological research in recent years has shed new light on the longstanding history and diversity of the region, and excit-ingly, the exhibition now includes a selection of objects from the UAE.”

For the first time, the exhibition will fea-ture important archaeological pieces from the United Arab Emirates, including a pearl found in Umm Al Quwain dating from 5500-5300 BCE (loaned by Umm Al Quwain Museum); a stone decorated with a wild camel from the late 3rd millennium BCE (loaned by Al Ain Museum), a remarkable 1st millennium BCE pieces from Saruq al Hadid (loaned by Dubai Municipality), as well as objects from Julfar (loaned by the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah).

These will be displayed alongside signifi-cant artefacts from the Kingdom of Saudi Ara-bia, including outstanding funerary Neolithic stela, a 3rd-century BCE bronze statue head (loaned by the Department of Archaeology at King Saud University); a 1st-century BCE gold funerary mask from Eastern Province (loaned by the National Museum in Riyadh), 9th-century engraved steles (loaned by King Fahad National Library); 4th-millennium BCE Anthropomorphic stele (loaned by the National Museum in Riyadh); a door of the Kaaba dating to 1355 (loaned by the National Museum in Riyadh), and a key of the Kaaba (loaned by the Department of Islamic Art at the Musée du Louvre).#

Practiced for thousands of years, the sport of falconry provides a proud link to a he-ritage that embodies nobility, courage and conservation

SPORT OF THE SKIES

For 4,000 years, Bedouin in the United Arab Emirates and wider Arabian Penin-sula practiced falconry as an important form of hunting in a resource-scarce land. Its role in society, however, has changed over time, and today it is one of the UAE’s most honoured tradition-al sports.

Falconry’s revered status derives from the sense of courage, honour and nobility, prized traditional Arab values, that are associated with the sport, as well as its links to nature conservation, respect for animals and the comradery among falcon-ers.

“Falconry allows our children to enjoy the spell of the desert, imbuing them with the virtues of pa-tience and fortitude, willpower and companionship, values that are just as important today, as they have been for generations,” says His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Emirates Falconers’ Club.#

Discover old Dubai in the city’s top souks. Lavish gold jewellery, hand-woven fabrics, traditional oud fragrances and cheap knickknacks – you’ll find it all in the exciting souks of Dubai. While Dubai’s reputation is as a thriving modern city, traditional Arabian markets are still a crucial part of daily life and trade. A wander through one of the city’s bustling souks is an essential experience for both visitors and locals.

SOUKSOUR FAVOURITE...

GOLD SOUK54 Al Khor St | Deira, near Gold Center

Building, Dubai

Fittingly for Dubai, “the city of gold”, the Gold Souk is a must-see for serious precious metal traders, couples looking for a statement jewellery piece, or visitors hunting for that special memento of their Dubai stay. The wide passageways are alive with tradesmen and artists trained in the craft of designing jewellery, from bespoke pieces and alluring Arabic designs with prices that aren’t set in stone.

SPICE SOUKSikkat Al Khail Road | Al Ras, Dubai

A close neighbour to the Gold Souk, follow your nose to the Spice Souk to be instantly transported to the hustle and bustle of a vibrant trading floor. With top chefs, home cooks and savvy expats all swearing by their personal picks among the Spice Souk’s colourful sacks of spices, herbs, rice and fruit, the market hall is a must-visit for those wanting to explore Dubai’s exotic side. Score high-quality saffron strands at local prices, taste fresh A-grade and sun dried organic dates and stock up on exotic spices, dried fruits, candied nuts, and locally-blended teas. You are sure to discover a new flavour – and yes, you can sample before you buy.

PERFUME SOUKSikkat al Khali Road, Dubai

Obsessed by scent? Follow the road up from the Gold and Spice Souks, and you’ll find yourself in Deira’s Perfume Souk on Sikkat Al Khali Street. Dealing in everything scented, from pure perfume to essential oils, incense sticks and the exotic traditional oud, the traditional trading spot has beautiful-ly-fragranced options for all. Buy rich oils in bulk, stored in wholesale-sized flagons, or opt for the more portable ornate vials designed for those who like to dab perfume on pulse points. Ask for a crash-course in oud - many vendors will be proud to explain the diffe-rences in this ancient fragrant resin. Have a personal fragrance created and bottled by experienced perfumers.

TEXTILE SOUK57 Ali Bin Abi Talib Street, Dubai

On the Bur Dubai side of the Creek you’ll discover the colourful Textile Souk. A favou-rite haunt of the city’s in-demand tailors and emerging fashion designers, the Souk’s vast array of shops are crowded with rolls of fa-brics, including fine silks, airy cottons, exotic palm frond weaves, and dazzling sari fabrics. Choose from your favourite materials and pop into one of the surrounding tailors to be measured for a dress, abaya (traditional wo-menswear), kandoura (traditional menswear) or suit made to your design. Most can turn around orders in mere days.

SOUK MADINATAl Sufouh Road, Dubai

Nestled between the five-star Mina A’Salam and Al Qasr hotels, Souk Madinat Jumeirah is for those who want to skip the haggling but enjoy the thrill of shopping souk-style. Wan-der the labyrinth of narrow lanes in search of fun souvenirs, fine art and sculptures, local and international design houses, and take in a show at the atmospheric Madinat Theatre. There’s an array of restaurants to choose from any time of day, with visitors able to dine in Levant cafes or fine-dining restaurants - many with front-row views of the waterways that meander through the complex. Comple-te your visit with a traditional abra ride and drink in the views of the icon Burj Al Arab.

SOUK AL BAHARSheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard,

Downtown Dubai

Just a short and scenic stroll over the foot-bridge that arches across Burj Lake at the foot of the towering Burj Khalifa and beside The Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar is a modern take on a traditional Arabian marketplace. Here, you can stock up on Bateel dates, incense cones, jewellery, abayas, brass lamps, and fresh Arabic pastries studded with nuts and drizzled with honey. Upstairs, with its wi-de-slung windows, is one of the best vantage points from which to enjoy a meal while watching the evening light shows at The Dubai Fountain.
