After being granted a fourth year of eligibility during World War II, Ohio State dental student Les Horvath ran and passed the undefeated Buckeyes to a Big Ten title, a No. 2 ranking in the polls and won the 1944 Heisman Trophy. In 1997, Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson picked up the Big Ten’s 13th Heisman Trophy and became the first predominantly defensive player to ever claim the award. Woodson etched his name into the Big Ten record books with eight interceptions in 1997 and 18 in his career. Receiver Desmond Howard won the 1991 Heisman Trophy for conference champion Michigan. In 1991, Howard set an NCAA record by catching a TD pass in 10 consecutive games. Tailback Eddie George, the 1995–96 Big Ten- Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year, etched his name into the Ohio State history books by becoming the fifth Buckeye player to win the coveted Heisman Trophy. George led the country in scoring with an average 12.1 points per game and reeled off 12 consecutive 100-yard games en route to setting school records in rushing and receptions by a running back. At 5-9, 185 pounds, halfback Vic Janowicz of Ohio State led the conference in rushing and scoring, and won the 1950 Heisman Trophy. His list of accolades following the 1950 season included conference MVP and UPI Player of the Year. Wisconsin fullback Alan “The Horse” Ameche, a two- time All-American, won the 1954 Heisman Trophy. In 1951, Ameche became the first freshman in conference history to lead the league in rushing. Ohio State halfback Howard “Hopalong” Cassady led the Buckeyes to consecutive Big Ten crowns (1954–55), one national championship (1954) and won the 1955 Heisman. Cassady also claimed the 1955 Walter Camp, Maxwell and UPI Awards for Player of the Year. After leading Minnesota to two consecutive AP national titles, halfback Bruce Smith won the Heisman Trophy following the 1941 season.
