The Indian retail Market is the fifth largest retail destination globally.According to industry estimates, it is estimated to grow from US$330 billionin 2007 to US$427 billion by 2010 and US$637 billion by 2015.

Simultaneously organized retail which presently accounts for 4 percent of the total market is likely to increase its share to 22 percent by 2010.

India has one of the largest numbers of retail outlets in the world, of the 12million retail outlets presents in the country, nearly 5 million sell food and related products.

However, organized retail accounts for only 4 percent of the total market,leaving the unorganized retail account to 96% - which offered huge growthpotential in this segment.

Unorganized Retailing refers to – the traditional formats of low-cost retailing, for example, 1.The Corner stores (Kirana shops), 2.Owner manned general stores, 3.Cigarette stalls (paan/beedi), 4.Convenience stores, 5.Hand cart and pavement vendors, etc.

Driven by changing life styles, strong income growth and favorable demo-graphic patterns, Indian retail is expanding at a rapid pace.

Mall space is expected to touch 40 million sq.ft. by end-2007 and an estimated60 million sq.ft. by end -2008.

The retail sector in India is highly fragmented and organized retail in the country is at a very nascent stage. Of the 12 million retail outlets, more than 80 % arerun by small family business, which use only household labour.
