Each Wednesday during the 2013 football season, the Big Sky Confer-ence will hold a conference call with the 13 league coaches. OFFENSE - Vernon Adams, QB, Eastern WashingtonAdams, a 6-foot, 190-pound sophomore from Pasa-dena, Calif., threw for a career-high 457 yards and tied the school single-game record with six touchdown passes in No. 3 Eastern Washington’s 42-37 road win over No. 10 Montana. Adams completed 27-of-40 passes. He threw TD passes of 19, 86, 4, 34, 52 and 9 yards Four of his TD passes came in the fi rst half as the Eagles built a 28-17 lead. Adams also rushed 10
times for 16 yards to fi nish with 468 yards of total off ense Adams leads the nation in pass effi ciency at 187.5 He is completing 67.3 percent of his passes for an average of 330.8 yards per game. He has thrown 30 touchdowns and eight interceptions. This is Adams’ second ROOT SPORTS Player of the Week honor this season and the fourth of his career.
DEFENSE - David Edgerson, S, Portland State Edgerson, a 5-11, 205-pound senior from New Or-leans, La., intercepted two passes and tallied three solo tackles in Portland State’s 14-10 win over North Dakota. Edgerson’s second interception came with 1:54 left in regulation at the Vikings’ 48-yard line and ended North Dakota’s hopes at a potential
game-winning drive. His fi rst interception came on the fi rst play of the second quarter. He returned it 15 yards to the North Dakota 32-yard line. This is his fi rst career ROOT SPORTS Player of the Week honor.
SPECIAL TEAMS - Marcus Alford, Ret., No. Arizona Alford, a 5-10, 160-pound sophomore from Oxnard, Calif., returned a kickoff 96 yards for the game-win-ning touchdown in the fourth quarter of Northern Arizona’s 17-13 road win over Cal Poly. The return came with 14:44 to play in the game, just after Cal Poly took the lead on a fi eld goal. It was Alford’s
fi rst career kick return for a touchdown. Alford fi nished the game with 133 return yards on three kick returns. This is his fi rst career ROOT SPORTS Player of the Week honor.
SPECIAL TEAMS - Colton Cook, K, Southern Utah Cook, a 5-8, 185-pound senior from Centerville, Utah, made all four of his fi eld-goal tries in a 19-9 home win over Idaho State. Cook made a pair of 38-yard fi eld goals, and also connected from 30 and 22 yards. His 22-yarder came with 27 seconds left in the game. Cook also made his only extra point attempt. This is Cook’s third ROOT SPORTS Player of
the Week honor this season, and the fourth of his career.

EAGLE-BOBCAT SHOWDOWN LOOMING: Eastern Washington and Montana State both earned conference wins last Saturday as both teams moved to 4-0 in conference. They are the two remaining undefeated teams left in league play. Eastern Washington travels to Idaho State this Saturday, while Montana State is at Northern Colorado. The Bobcats and Eagles meet the following week on Nov. 9 in Cheney, Wash. The game will be televised by ROOT SPORTS. EWU and MSU shared the regular-season title in 2012 with Cal Poly. Since 2010, Montana State is 25-3 in conference games and has won at least a share of the conference title all three seasons. Eastern Washington is 23-5 in conference games since 2010 with co-titles in 2010 and 2012. EWU beat Montana State last season in Bozeman. Montana State beat Eastern Washington in 2011 in Cheney.
SUPER SOPHOMORE: Eastern Washington sophomore quarterback Vernon Adams threw for a career-high 457 yards and tied his career high with six touch-down passes as the Eagles beat Montana 42-37 in Missoula on Saturday. Through eight games, Adams has thrown 30 touchdown passes. The school record is 37 set by Bo Levi Mitchell in 2010. Montana’s Brian Ah Yat holds the league single-season record with 42 touchdown passes in 1996. Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garop-polo leads the nation with 35 passing touchdowns. Adams leads the nation in pass efficiency with a mark of 187.5 He is completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 2,646 yards. The Walter Payton Award candidate ranks third in the FCS in total offense at 372.5 yards per game and is fifth in passing yards per game (330.8). In just 20 career games, Adams has thrown 50 touchdown passes. The league record is 98 by Weber State’s Cameron Higgins.
BAUMAN REMAINS FIFTH: Northern Arizona’s Zach Bauman rushed for 91 yards in NAU’s 17-13 win over Cal Poly. Bauman now has 4,651 career rushing yards, which ranks fifth in league history. He needs 80 yards to surpass Ryan Fuqua on the all-time list. Bauman has 975 rushing yards this season, and needs just 25 more to reach 1,000 for the fouth straight season. Bauman has 5,752 career all-purpose yards, which ranks eighth all-time in league history. He needs 171 all-pur-pose yards to become the school’s all-time leader, surpassing Pete Mandley, who amassed 5,922 all-purpose yards from 1979-83. Northern Arizona plays host to North Dakota on Saturday. Last year, Bauman rushed for 176 yards against North Dakota.

MCGHEE ON VERGE OF TOP 10: Montana State senior QB DeNarius McGhee completed 15-of-20 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-16 win over UC Davis on Saturday. McGhee now has 10,383 career passing yards. Mc-Ghee enters Saturday’s game against Northern Colorado 314 yards away from tying Idaho’s John Friesz (1986-89) and Northern Arizona’s Greg Wyatt (1986-89) for ninth place on the Big Sky’s all-time passing list. McGhee has 11,453 yards of total offense, which ranks seventh on the Big Sky’s all-time list. He needs just 61 yards to surpass Montana’s Dave Dickenson, who had 11,513 yards of total offense from 1992-95.
ANOTHER ROAD WIN: Northern Arizona beat Cal Poly 17-13 on the road last Saturday. Northern Arizona has now won seven of its last eight road games against Big Sky teams dating back to the start of the 2012 season. NAU was 4-0 in league road games last season. NAU is 2-1 in road conference games this season, and also beat UC Davis at Davis in a non-conference game.

AROUND THE BIG SKY SKY IN THE SAGARIN: Three Big Sky teams are ranked in the top 11 FCS teams in this week’s Jeff Sagarin Ratings. Eastern Washington is ranked third among FCS teams and 78th overall. Montana is eighth among FCS teams and 91st over-all. Montana State is 11th among FCS teams and 98th overall. Northern Arizona (23), Cal Poly (30), Sacramento State (31) and Portland State (39) also rank in the top 40 among FCS teams. The Big Sky remains fourth among FCS confer-ences, behind the Missouri Valley, Colonial and Southland.
SKY IN THE TOP 25: Four Big Sky teams are ranked in the top 14 in both ma-jor FCS polls. Eastern Washington is ranked third in the Sports Network Poll and fourth in the Coaches’ Poll. Montana State is fifth in both polls. Montana dropped to 12th in the Sports Network Poll and 13th in the Coaches’ Poll. North-ern Arizona improved to 14th in both polls. North Dakota State is No. 1 in both polls, followed by Eastern Illinois. Undefeated Coastal Carolina is third in the Coaches’ Poll. Southern Utah is receiving votes in both polls.
KUPP ON FIRE: Eastern Washington freshman WR Cooper Kupp was named the National Co-Freshman of the Week by the Sports Network after catching a career-high 11 passes for a career-high 182 yards with two touchdowns. Kupp, a candidate for the Jerry Rice Award, has caught at least one touchdown pass in all eight games this season. Kupp leads all freshmen and is tied for third in the nation with 11 touchdown catches. Kupp has 44 catches for 777 yards. His 777 receiving yards are the most in the nation by a freshman.
VIKINGS TOPS IN BLOCKS: Portland State’s Michael Plummer blocked a North Dakota punt in the fourth quarter, which led to the Vikings’ first touchdown in a 14-10 win. Portland State has blocked three punts this season, which is tied for the national lead. PSU has blocked six kicks total, which is also tied for the national lead.
SUU AT SIX: Southern Utah earned its sixth win of the season with a 19-9 win over Idaho State last week. The Thunderbirds, who have a bye this week, have equaled the most wins in a season since Ed Lamb took over the program in 2008. SUU won six games in 2009 and 2010. The Thunderbirds have not won seven games in a season since 2000.
BOBCATS-BEARS ON ROOT SPORTS: ROOT SPORTS will televise Saturday’s Big Sky Conference game between No. 5 Montana State and Northern Colo-rado. Coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. Mountain.
