Positive Effects of Big Cities Big City Infrastructure

Big cities provide easy access topublic facilities and social benefits,

    like hospitals, libraries, schools

    and universities.

People living in larger cities often

    have better access to adequate

    policing (safety) and public health

    services

    Often the water supply, sanitation

    infrastructure, energy supplies,

    transportation (both road network

    and public transport), and

    communications are focal points

of urban development and tend tobe more developed in cities

    versus rural areas,

Positive Effects of Big Cities Economic Opportunities

    Urbanization offers real economic

    opportunities that often do not

    exist in rural/small town

    environments.

The number and types of jobs, as

well as level of salaries, is often

very limited in rural areas and

small towns There is an overall growth in

    commercial opportunities with

    urbanization, resulting in more

    profits and more jobs.

    Growing demand for urban

    expansion and development in

    less-developed countries, requires

an increased level of public and

    private investment. These

    investments eventually raise the

standard of living and provide new

    employment opportunities.

    ENTERTAINMENT!

The number and qualityof entertainment options

    usually differ greatly

    between big cities and

    BIG CITIES AROUND THE WORLD

TOKYO Tokyo, Edo in her former name, was

founded in the 12th century. Tokyo History

was started by a local aristocrat, Edo Taro

    Shigenada,

The castle passed in 1590 to Ieyasu

Tokugawa, founder of the Tokugawa line of

    shoguns.

The Tokugawa shogunate (Gneralship) wasestablished in 1603 with Edo as its seat of

    government. The emperors residence and

    formal capital remained in Kyoto.

The overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate

and the restoration of Imperial rule in 1868

led to the rapid modernization andWesternization of Japan.

    BIG CITIES AROUND THE WORLD

TOKYO Renamed Tokyo [East capital] by the young

Emperor Meiji, the city would from here on outserve as Japan's new national, and Imperial,

    capital.

    The civil war-cum-revolution that ended a 250-

year old status quo signaled the conclusion of

    Japan's self-imposed isolation as a feudal

backwater and the beginning of an unprecedented

and rapid industrial, political, and culturaltransformation into a modern world state and

    world power.

In the headlong rush toward modernization, Tokyo

led the metamorphosis the whole of Japan

underwent in a few decades. For the foreign

expatriate, the city represented a modern

landscape of trading opportunities andexploitation. For the typical Tokyo-ite, and any out-

country Japanese visiting the new capital, it was

metropolis wonderland of many marvelous and

wonderful new creations and adapted ideas.

    BIG CITIES AROUND THE WORLD

TOKYO Many of Tokyo's oldest, most historic

buildings were lost in two cataclysmicevents:

    The 1923 Great Kanto earthquake

    The 1923 Tokyo earthquake

    killed130,000 people.

What wasnt destroyed by the quake

    was burned in subsequent fires.

This was the biggest disaster in the

    history of Japan.

The fire-bombings of the city during the final

months of the Pacific War in 1945.

The Economy In Japan: The Lost Decade

The economic miracle ended unexpectedly at

the start of the nineties. The bubble ended in

a massive crash in the stock market, a debt

crisis, and a crisis in the banking sector. That era is known as the lost decade in the

economy of Japan. Tokyo economic growth

came to a total stop during the nineties.

Social Graces Punctuality: Japan runs on a schedule, and being on time means being five to

    ten minutes early

Blowing your nose in public is

considered to be bad manners. Excuse

yourself and go into the restroom.

Talking in Public: If youre traveling with

others on the subway, keep your voice

down. Youll be the only one heard if

    you speak loudly.Steve Beimel,

    founder, Esprit Travel & Tours,

People in Japan bow -- a lot. It's their

version of the handshake, only more

complex, and failing to return a bow is

    considered impolite

The Japanese are gift-givers. If you're

invited to their homes (very rare, as theculture tends to entertain in public

    places), bring a gift
