The world has changed significantly in the hundred years that have elapsed since the beginning of World War I, and The National Archives has hundreds of historical items that document the dawn of the War. The content comes from the UK government and England and Wales, covering World War I technology, propaganda, women and civilians. Read below to find a small selection of our favorite items from The National Archives’ WWI collection.

General War LaborThe Women & the First World War Anthology exhibits documentation of women in the Navy, Army, Air Force and more, but the photographs of women doing work for the war are especially stunning. These sepia photographs show women on top of trains, on rooftops, in factories, working at perilous heights with strong machinery and more, all to contribute to the war effort.

3. MapsFans of old maps will love poring over the high-resolution ones in the Technology in WWI Anthology. The documentation gives viewers the bird’s-eye view of World War I. Some maps picture specific battle plans while others serve to orient soldiers of trenches, enemy advances and the area’s topography. For added study, compare these century-old maps to those of the same locations as depicted today.

2. Propaganda DocumentsThe documents in the Propaganda and WWI Anthology show colorful advertisements for all sorts of tasks: fruit pickers, pilots, clerks, weapon builders and moret. There are even tips for how to conserve on goods and encouraging messages to persuade citizens to buy war bonds and stamps. The bright tone and patriotic messages give insight into the propaganda of World War I.

Fran Kaplan is the Virtual Museum Coordinator at America’s Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM). ABHM’s mission is to increase the public’s awareness and understanding of the magnitude of the Black Holocaust, its ongoing impact on American society and what we can do about it.

Every week from 1882 to the 1930s, on average, a white mob captured and murdered a black man, woman or child in the South. America’s Black Holocaust Museum’s lynching Anthology presents the development of lynching as a folkway, a traditional act, passed down from its early roots in the Revolutionary era to its current manifestations. The last ten years have seen a great upsurge of interest in this phenomenon on the part of American scholars, artists and general public. Lynching: An American Folkway responds to this need. Lynching: An American Folkway compiles some 80 original works about lynching by

African- and European-American politicians and poets, scholars and singers, activists and artists. Curated by scholar-griots from America’s Black Holocaust Museum, the Anthology comprises five sections: A Painful History (newspaper/magazine accounts, scholarly essays and studies, a bibliography); Looking at Lynching (souvenir photo-postcards); Strange Fruit (lynching in the arts); Resistance and Repair (anti-lynching activism, monuments, reenactment); A Lone Survivor Bears Witness (video clips and writings by and about the last known survivor of a lynching).

I have always had a soft spot for the world of voguing, catwalks, and runway shows. In Victorian Fashion: A Historical Style Collection, I am able to escape to an era where “fashion” didn't mean edgy, fur-trimmed bikinis, but high collars, big hats, and hoop skirts. The regal fashions of the Victorian era fascinate me, especially the lace-laden dresses worn by the women. As the old adage goes, “Beauty is pain,” but I cannot fathom wearing a wire skirt, a corset, and bustle at all times for the sake of style.Perusing the Anthology, I have discovered many gems, such as an old advertisement from a catalog boasting the “cheapest real Whalebone Corsets in Europe.” Also, flipping through multiple issues of Godey’s Lady Book (think retro-chic Vogue or Glamour)

makes reading fashion magazines by the pool seem a tad bit more refined.This stylish collection also features examples of children’s garb, including a painting of young Prince Albert Edward of Wales, arms akimbo, in a trendy sailor suit. Menswear makes an appearance by highlighting the popularity of top hats, coat tails and fabulous pantaloons worn during at this time.One of my favorite pieces within the Anthology is Charles Dana Gibson's Social Ladder, a collection of sketches from the creator of an icon—the Gibson Girl. Throughout the Anthology, insights into the fashions of Victorian men, women, and children abound.
