I had the privilege of participating in a focus group of UGAstudents last week organized by East West Bistro marketing di-rector Holly Stanfill, who is also one of our Bulldawg Illustrated(BI) sales associates. Part of the mission of the study was of greatinterest to me. It was to better understand how these young peo-ple use media and get their information.

We gleaned some valuable data. Sure some of it we couldhave predicted like that they are all into facebook but they alsotold us some not-so-obvious influences such as they do the cross-word puzzles in the papers so if you want to market to them inprint you might put it near the crossword! By the way, we addeda crossword in this issue on page 16 and we have a group “Friendsof Bulldawg Illustrated” on facebook that we keep current socheck and check on the student report card for media.

The group and our sharing made me take a harder look athow we approach things at Bulldawg Illustrated and to thinkabout how we can continue to appeal to many generations. Let’sface it, you are typically a bulldog from birth to death so we havea tall task to try to be relevant to that large a demographic and havesomething for everyone as well as reach them in their preferredmethod. We are up for it!

We talked about texting and twitter. One of the studentsnoted that they don’t use twitter to find out what to do althoughsometimes seeing an event or offering mentioned might remindthem. No, the main use of twitter for them is to follow celebritiesand keep up with pop culture. Hmmmm, I can relate a little. We follow bulldog celebrities like @coachmarkfox and@markricht.

Believe it or not, I have found our @bd_illustrated follow-ers on twitter are of all ages. It is not just a super young forum andneither is facebook for that matter. Some of those that talk andshare the most on twitter about the #dawgs (that is the hashtagyou use to share with anyone else who is chatting about ourbeloved bulldogs on twitter) are a little older than students. Someof the most talkative are @allyugadawg who is a biotechnologistafter achieving her undergraduate and graduate school degreesfrom UGA and @DavidPollack47 who played for UGA in theearly 2000s and is now a father and family man and @RexRobin-son5 who was the kicker on the 1980 National Championshipteam. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of students like LadyDog @AngelRobinson33 and our favorite dunker @TLeslie1 andour own BI Athens editor @RyanScates that tweet and engagewith UGA fans.

Of course we strive to provide places for UGA fans of allages to engage whether in print or online. Uga mascot ownerSonny Seiler once said Bulldawg Illustrated is a great place to keepup with the dawgs and with each other, which was music to ourears. It ties in with what one student blurted out to the group, “Ipick up Bulldawg Illustrated to look at the photos!” Well, at theend of the day, even with our incredible sports coverage, don’tyou all look first at BI photos to see whom you might know?

I loved talking with these students about their peeves andpreferences in media. I am already implementing some of theirsuggestions. We are always interested in sharing ideas and bet-tering our business. If you have any compliments, comments orcomplaints, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Check out page 2 as well and www.bulldawgillustrated.comfor a photo gallery of the focus group. You can also watch ayoutube video on our guide2athens’ website of this fashionablegroup that we included in the Street Chic Vlog. It is a video blogthat chronicles good style found in the streets of Athens and in thiscase in East West Bistro. Thanks again to the focus group for par-ticipating!

The UGA Spring Semester is headed into themidterm just as Georgia athletics are shifting intohigh gear.

Over the next two weeks, Dawg fans can lookforward to catching both basketball squads, the de-fending national champion gymnastics team, theDiamond Dawgs, softball team, and both tennisteams defend their home turf in Athens.

This time of year, all of the successes comingfrom so many different teams make it easy to be aGeorgia Bulldawg.

And as usual, putting Issue Four together hasbeen an absolute blast. The highlight of the last twoweeks for me was definitely shooting the men’s bas-ketball game against South Carolina on February13.

Upon an off-the-wall, or ceiling, request, Geor-gia Sports Information Director Claude Feltongranted me access to take pictures from the catwalkabove the court in Stegeman Coliseum.

While I was originally looking forward to get-ting some original shots from above the court, Ionly got about 5 steps out on the catwalk beforemy knees went weak and I started tiptoeing my wayto the center of the arena.

“You looked more nervous than an Alabamabooster at an NCAA hearing,” described a buddy ofmine who saw me creeping above the court.

And honestly, the prospect of dropping myglasses or a lens cap onto the floor below had meeven more nervous than that. I sure did not want togo down in Georgia history as the dimwit who costthe Hoop Dawgs a game because Travis Leslie gottaken out by a falling camera on a fast break withonly seconds to play.

Fortunately, I stayed out of the way of thegame, the Dawgs rolled the Gamecocks, and wehave some cool shots for you to enjoy both in printand online at www.bulldawgillustrated.com

Also, the voice of the Diamond Dawgs andBulldawg Illustrated Sports Editor Jeff Dantzler hasput together a nice list of reasons why GeorgiaBaseball is set to have a solid 2010 season. With somuch even-year success in the past, I have alreadystarted planning a road trip to Omaha this June.

Issue Four also marks new student internChelsea Lipocky’s debut with Bulldawg IllustratedAthens. Chelsea brings sports coverage experiencefrom ESPN, campus knowledge from the UGA Vis-itors Center, and social graces from Delta Zetasorority that are sure to take this publication to anew level. I hope you enjoy her interview withmembers of the ever-popular UGA Dance Dawgsspirit squad.

The midterm approaches and spring breakbeckons for students, while tax season and theWinter Olympic curling finals wait for local Athe-nians existing in “the real world.” Whatever groupyou happen to fall into, I hope Issue Four providesyou with all you need to know regarding the Dawgsand what’s happening beyond the hedges.

Foley Field has been a field of dreams in 2000sThe magic began in 2001.After a nine-year absence from the

NCAA Tournament and a 47-year South-eastern Conference championshipdrought, Georgia followed up its firstleague title since 1954 with a heart-stop-ping Regional Championship victory fu-eled by the most magnificent individualperformance in school history. The Bull-dogs lost the Athens Regional opener toGeorgia Southern on a Friday night, butfought back to eliminate Georgia Tech inloser’s bracket the following morning.Later that evening, All-American JeffKeppinger hit for the cycle and the Dogstook an extra inning thriller from South-ern to advance to the championshipround. It would take two wins over up-start Coastal Carolina to move on to theSuper-Regional. The Dogs took the firstone in easy fashion, then came the win-ner-take-all showdown with the Chanti-cleers. Down a run in the top of theninth (with the Dogs the designated vis-itor) with two out and All-SEC star AndyNeufeld aboard at first, Keppingerblasted a 2-1 pitch over the left centerfield wall sending Foley Field into a stateof unabated frenzy. Keppinger went 5-for-5 with three homers and then startedthe double play in the bottom of theninth to secure the win. The Bulldogsthen took two of three from Florida Stateat home, powered by Keppinger, to ad-vance to the College World Series.

Ron Polk coached the Dogs toOmaha, then returned to his longtimehome Mississippi State. Athens nativeand Georgia alum David Perno, a fiveyear assistant for Polk and Robert Sappwho recruited most of the stars of the ’01squad, was then hired to take over theprogram.

Perno guided the Dogs to the 2002NCAA Tournament, marking the firsttime in school history that Georgia hadbeen to back to back postseasons.

In 2004, the magic of Foley Field hitnew heights. Clemson needed two Sun-day wins to capture the Athens Regionaland advance. SEC champion Georgialead 9-2 in the middle innings, but theTigers roared back to win 10-9, deflatingthe Dogs and headed to the decisive bat-tle with all the momentum. Georgia, again as the road team at Foley, trailed 6-4 in the ninth. But Bobby Felmy andJason Jacobs delivered back-to-backhomers to tie it. Clint Sammons wentdeep in the 10th to put Georgia in front7-6. The Tigers had runners at secondand third with one out in the bottom ofthe 10th, but All-American closer WillStartup, pitching on heart and guts, came

up with back-to-back strikeouts as thestadium exploded. Georgia then swepttwo straight from Tech in Atlanta to cap-ture the Super and move on to Omaha.

Georgia faced elimination again in2006, but took three straight, includingback-to-back victories over Florida Stateto take the Regional and advance to theSuper. South Carolina, which was 0-4against the Dogs on the season, hit fivestraight homers to win Game One. Butthe Bulldogs roared back to capture twostraight and advance to the CollegeWorld Series for a second time in threeyears and a third in six.

SEC champion Georgia fell in theopener of the Athens Regional to DavidLipscomb and trailed Louisville 5-2 inthe seventh, staring elimination squarelyin the face. All-American sensation Gor-don Beckham, Georgia’s greatest player, hit a game-tying homer and the Dogswere off and running. Georgia wouldroll back and win two straight, setting upa showdown with Tech. The Dogsneeded two wins to advance and Tech re-quired one. Georgia would steam-rollthe Yellow Jackets 8-0 and 18-6 to moveon to the Super. With the program hav-ing accumulated an incredible fan fol-lowing, the Dogs split the first two withN.C. State at Foley, then exploded fornine runs in the bottom of the first totake control of the championship game. With the contest long secured, Beckhamstepped to the plate in the bottom of theeighth and the overflow throng realized itwould be his final Foley Field plate ap-pearance. With the crowd chanting “let’sgo Gordo,” he blasted a Titanic blast overthe left center field wall to tie the schoolcareer home run record while pumpinghis fists towards the bedlam-filled throngon Kudzu Hill. All-American closer JoshFields, who closed out the ’06 Regionaland Super and the ’08 Regional, put thefinishing touches on the victory.

For the third time in five years,Perno had guided Georgia to Omaha, es-tablishing the Bulldogs as one of only sixschools in the country to make thatmany trips over that time. Georgia hadgone from doormat to one of the nation’spremier programs with Perno establish-ing himself as one of America’s elitecoaches.

In seven postseason events at FoleyField in the 2000’s, the Bulldogs were anincredible 16-0 when facing elimination. It’s time to start a new decade and nextup for Georgia is the shot at another first, three straight NCAA Regional berths.

With Perno at the helm, the sky’s thelimit for Bulldog baseball.

DIAMONDDAWGS

1. Strength in the Rotation – In all of Georgia’sOmaha runs of the 2000s, the Bulldogs have had strengthin all three spots for the Southeastern Conference pitchingrotations. The three-game sets prepare postseason teamsfor Regionals, Super-Regionals and finally Omaha. In ’04,it was Ruthven, Hyle and LuBrano. In ’06, it was Brown,Westphal and Holder down the stretch. In ’08, it wasHolder, Dodson and Moreau with Montgomery coming onlate. This season, the hard-throwing ace righty JustinGrimm will be the Friday night anchor. Senior Jeff Walters, who has good stuff, moves from the pen to the Saturdayslot. On Sunday’s, it will be Michael Pallazone, who has skyhigh ceiling.

2. A potentially Explosive Outfield – Georgia’ssophomore outfield class has the potential to be great. Theyall had some outstanding moments as freshmen, and nowwith a year’s experience, the trio of (from left field to right)Johnathan Taylor, Zack Cone and Peter Virdin could makethe Bulldogs go at the plate and in the field with plenty ofspeed to burn. With freshman Zach Taylor from Statesboroin the mix, this group over the next two years has the po-tential to rival Georgia’s dynamic group of Johnathan Wyatt,Joey Side and Bobby Felmy (plus Kyle Keen and MattOlson) that helped drive the Dogs to Omaha in ’04 and ’06.

3. A BIG one-two closer tandem –And I mean big.Six-foot-six senior lefty Alex McCree and 6-4 sophomorerighty Cecil “the Diesel” Tanner look like a bookend set ofoffensive tackles and they can both bring it. McCree wasslowed by mono last year, and now moves back to thebullpen where he was part of the nation’s best on Georgia’srun to the 2008 College World Series finals. His hit list in-cludes Florida State, Miami, Stanford, Clemson and Tech.McCree has a plus fastball and good breaking pitch. Tan-ner has an explosive fastball. David Perno’s three CollegeWorld Series squads all had All-American closers: WillStartup in ’04 and Josh Fields in ’06 and ’08.

4. Newcomer bolstered Bullpen depth - A num-ber of freshmen and junior college arms will give Georgiasome serious bullpen depth. In 2008, led by Fields, Mc-Cree, Dean Weaver and Will Harvil, Georgia’s bullpen wasthe country’s best – highlighted by a record 40 inning SECscoreless streak. With a rotation and back end of the penthat could be very good, these new Dogs – plus senior rightySteve Esmonde, senior lefty Justin Earls and sophomoresouthpaw Chase Hawkins – will be called upon to bridgethe gap and fill in those valuable midweek starting roles.

5. Offensive Improvement on the Right Side –Chase Davidson, who will take over for one of Georgia’s bestever players, Rich Poythress, at first base and Levi Hyams, who goes back to second, both showed flashes of excellenceas freshmen. If they both make the jump as sophomores,

Georgia will have some big time power and athleticism onthe right side.

6. Impact at Shortstop – You’ve got to be good atshortstop to make it to the College World Series. In 2001,it was All-American Jeff Keppinger. Justin Holmes, an All-SEC selection and current assistant coach, manned the po-sition in ’04. It was the the great Gordon Beckham in ’06 asa freshman and in ’08 as the country’s best player. This year,it will be highly touted freshman Kyle Farmer. He won’t beasked to be an all-star, just to make the plays and be a pro-ductive offensive performer. Hyams could move over fromsecond if Farmer goes through growing pains.

7. May in the Hot Corner – A Freshman All-Amer-ican a year ago, the Effingham County native emerged asone of the conference’s best players, both at the plate and inthe field. Colby May is one of the country’s top returninghitters and he’s stellar with the glove at third, arguably thetoughest position to play in college baseball. The horsehidegets up on “the corner” in a hurry. If May can avoid thesophomore slump and match his freshman numbers, heshould lead the Bulldogs back to the postseason.

8. Depth from back-to-back classes – All of Geor-gia’s starting position players (including catchers Brett De-loach and Christian Glisson) are freshmen and sophomores,as are many of the arms. That means they’ll all be back in2011, too. The Bulldogs staff of David Perno, pitchingcoach Brady Wiederhold, recruiting coordinator Jason Eller,Holmes and Kris Edge, taking over for the beloved BrianJester, has put together two straight strong classes. Last year’sgroup helped Georgia make it to back to back regionals. This year’s crop on top could make history.

9. An opportunity for a Program First – Georgiahas never made it to three consecutive NCAA Regionals. But this program has accomplished a number of firsts in theremarkable Perno era. The Bulldogs have been to 10 NCAAtournaments all time, and five have come under Perno’swatch. With three College World Series trips and a pair ofSEC titles since 2004, Georgia has been one of the country’smost successful programs, with that combination of stabil-ity and excitement. This season gives the Dogs a chance foranother first.

10. Fight for Chance – The heart-breaking, heart-warming, uplifting and courageous story of Chance Veazeywill serve as unparalleled inspiration for the program. “Ipromise you, no team will fight harder than us this year,”said Coach Perno. They’re fighting for Chance.”

Dance DawgsWhen it comes to UGA basketball games,

you never know what’s going to happen. Is TreyThompkins going to break 20 points? How manyrebounds is Jasmine Hassell going to bring down? One thing you can always count on is that theDance Dawgs will show up with great routinesand a lot of spirit. As a fan, I completely underesti-mated the amount of time and work these womanput it, and the asset they are to the game experi-ence. I talked to Emily Ethridge and ReneauKadis, the team’s captains, about what it is like tobe a Dance Dawg here at UGA. Both are seniors, and this is their last season on the team, but theyaren’t wasting anytime being upset about that yet.

How long have you been dancing?EE: I have been dancing since I was seven,

but I have been a part of the Dance Dawgs sincemy sophomore year.

RK: Since I was three, it’s my life. I’ve beenon the Dance Dawgs since I was a freshman.

How would you describe this style of dance?RK: Well, it’s really a lot of cheer movements

and sharp motions. Also, we bring in a lot of stufffor floor routines that’s more graceful, so we are allover the place. We’re very versatile as a team, andthat’s one of our strong points.

EE: Everything! We do hip-hop, we do jazz,we do fun stuff with Hairy Dawg, a little bit ofeverything. We are very diverse; we are a multi-talented group.

How often do you practice?EE: We practice twice a week in addition to

weights and the games. It is definitely time con-suming, but we love it.

RK: It is an adjustment with all the time ittakes, but we are each others’ support system.

Is dancing something you want to continueis the future?

RK: I am continuing it, definitely. I don’t re-ally know in what venue yet. I am trying out forsome professional teams, and I am also lookinginto auditioning for some things on Broadway.

EE: When I graduate, I hope to go to Physi-cians Assistant school, but I am also trying out fora few NFL dance teams. I don’t want to stop yet.

Where does the inspiration for the routinescome from?

EE: It’s cool, because each of our dancers hassomething unique to bring to the team. We allbring our own ideas and mesh them together.

RK: We have so many routines, we pullmoves from YouTube and professional teams, buta lot of girls bring in stuff. Almost everyone hasbeen dancing for 18 years, so you can imaginewhat we come up with. We all contribute.

How would you describe the atmosphereand the feelings you experience during a game?

EE: High energy! We love the games, thereare three or four games a week, but we are such aclose group of friends, it’s fun. We love beingthere.

RK: That atmosphere of the games is crazy. The UGA spirit is one of a kind. When it ispacked in there…that is why you do it. You are inhere every day, you’re tired, you don’t think youcan do it, you fall asleep trying to study, but it’sworth it.

From putting together routines to being therefor each other when it seems overwhelming, thesewomen do it all together. I think I can speak forall of us when I say the hard work pays off!

STADION aTHENS Classic

at UGAPreparations are gearing up for the inau-

gural Stadion Athens Classic at UGA, the onlyPGA Tour-sanctioned event to be held inNortheast Georgia in 2010. The tournament isscheduled for April 26-May 2 at the Universityof Georgia golf course.

The golf tournament is a stop on the PGATOUR’s Nationwide Tour, which is designed toidentify the players who are ready to competeand win on golf's biggest stage. The Nation-wide Tour is considered the “official provingground” of the PGA TOUR, and two out ofthree PGA TOUR members are NationwideTour alumni.

In addition to the top-notch golf the tour-nament will offer, the Stadion Athens Classic atUGA features a ticketing system that is de-signed to give back to the Athens area. TICK-ETS Fore CHARITY ™ allows localnot-for-profits to sell event tickets and keep 100percent of the proceeds from the sale. The pro-gram has raised more than $4 million for not-for-profits in other PGA TOUR communities.

“Every ticket buyer will be asked to desig-nate a not-for-profit. We will process and man-age these ticket orders, with 100 percent of theproceeds going right back to the selling organi-zations or designated not-for-profit,” said Tour-nament Director Dave Cousart. “If anot-for-profit can sell $10,000 worth of tickets, they have just added $10,000 to theirbudget…This is just another example of howthe tournament is exposing new audiences tothe world’s best golfers while providing signifi-

cant assistance to the community and its insti-tutions.”

Participating local non-profits include theGeorgia Junior Golf Foundation, Athens LandTrust, Athens Area Homeless Shelter, AmericanCancer Society, Athens YMCA, and dozensmore.

Chaired by former UGA All-Americangolfer and three-time Ryder Cup participantChip Beck, the tournament will be operated bythe University of Georgia’s Auxiliary ServicesDepartment. The Stadion Athens Classic atUGA will be the only event on the NationwideTour that is owned and operated by an institu-tion of higher education. All net proceeds fromthe event will support need-based scholarshipsfor UGA students through the Arch Founda-tion.

Of course, an event designed to makesuch a huge impact on the community couldnot exist without the help of some dedicatedvolunteers. All told, more than 400 volunteersare needed to ensure smooth operations of theevent. There is no golf experience required tobe a volunteer.

Volunteers are charged a nominal fee of$45 to help defray some of the volunteer-re-lated costs, but all will receive a package includ-ing clothing, tickets, food and free golf valued atmore than $250.

For tickets and information on how to be-come a volunteer, visit http://www.stadiona-thensclassic.uga.edu/
