THE DEATH OF BHISHMA
INTRODUCTION
Bhishma is often considered as a greatexample of devotion and sacrifice. His nameitself is an honour to him, Bhishma whichmeans great and Pitamah which meansGrandfather which combined means GreatGrandsire.
Bhishma was born as the eighth son of theillustrious King Shantanu and Ganga.
He was known as 'Bhishma Pitamaha'(Pitamaha meaning the grandfather orgrandsire) among the Pandavas and theKauravas.
He was a well known person for hisknowledge in politics and many othersubjects. He was a very good archer and hewon a battle with his Guru Parshurama, whois otherwise unbeatable (due to theinfluence of time and the relationship ofGod and devotee).
Bhishma means He of the terribleoath, referring to his vow of lifelongcelibacy. Originally named Devavratha, hebecame known as Bhishma after he took thebhishana pratigya ('terrible oath') — thevow of lifelong celibacy and of service towhoever sat on the throne of his father (thethrone of Hastinapur).
Bhishma took another vow that he wouldalways see his father's image in whoever sitson the King's throne and will serve him.
PERSONALITY
Bhishma had stature and personality that inthose times were fit for kings. He was a trueKshatriya as well as a disciplined ascetic - arare combination. Like a true Kshatriya, henever unnecessarily exhibited passion andanger. A symbol of truth and duty, thebenevolent Bhishma was in all senses a truehuman.
SKILLS, TALENTS, AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Bhishma was not only a good warrior, butalso highly skilled in political science
He had all the qualities and abilities fit foran excellent king. His goodness and sacrificemade him one of the greatest devotees ofLord Krishna himself. He tried his best tobring reconciliation between Pandavas andKauravas to prevent the war.
Even in the Kurukshetra war while he wasthe general he tried his best to keep the warlow key by minimising confrontationbetween the two camps
Even as he fell he tried to use theopportunity to persuade both camps to putan end to the war.
After the war, while on his deathbed he gavedeep and meaningful instructions toYudhishthira on statesmanship and theduties of a king.
IN THE MAHABHARATA WAR
Bhishma is the one who witnessed theMahābhārata completely from thebeginning since the rule of Shantanu.
In this war, Bhishma vowed not to kill any ofthe Pandavas, as he loved them, being theirgrandsire. Duryodhan often confrontedBhishma alleging that he was not actuallyfighting for the Kaurava camp as hewouldn't kill any Pandava but would letthem kill Kauravas.
Bhishma lay on the 'bed of arrows' till the end of the battle for an interesting reason. Bhishma asked Krishna why he was suffering so much. Krishna told him it was a result of his reticence and silence towards Draupadi's cheer-haran which was a maha-papam (great Sin). Bhishma failed to act to protect Draupadi at a time of dire need. Krishna further told him that the immediate time was not an auspicious time to leave the world.

The relation between Bhishma andPandavas/Kauravas is described as that of agrandsire.
Their descendence was in the following generations
Maharaj Hastin (founder of the Hastinapur empire) (Many generations)
When Bhishma died, he was the eldest livingancestor to the equivalent of 5 generationsas the Pandavas themselves weregrandparents. Their only living heir wasParikshit, Arjuna's grandson, the son ofAbhimanyu and Matsya princess Uttara.
Its said that once Bhishma fell down piercedwith arrows he was feeling thirsty.Duryodhana went to fetch water, but Arjunashot an arrow at the ground and water camepouring out directly into Bhishmas mouth. Its actually river goddess Ganga coming tosatisfy the thirst of her son Bhishma.
