Beyond the bump – Improving postpartum clinical care RACGP WA 6048 Created by RACGP WA and St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital, this one-day active learning module (ALM) aims to develop and enhance the skills and knowledge of general practitioners (GPs) in guiding new parents through the first three months after giving birth. This workshop will cover the crucial topics of breastfeeding, pelvic floor and other musculoskeletal problems specific to new mothers, maternal and paternal mental health, cultural considerations in the postpartum period, as well as unexpected issues relating to the physical recovery of the mother. Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on learning, active discussion and workshops revolving around what is commonly referred to as the 'fourth trimester'. This workshop will also include an interactive session on the appropriate use of antenatal and postnatal Medicare item numbers, including the use of 4001*, 16407 and 16591. The correct use of Medicare item 16500 and antenatal billing will also be discussed. Learning outcomes 1. Describe management options of breastfeeding challenges sometimes experienced by new mothers. 2. Outline assessment and early management of postpartum pelvic floor problems. 3. Describe management of pelvic, caesarean wound and perineal infections in the postnatal period. 4. Create a checklist, for use in your practice, that covers all essential elements of postpartum visits to a GP. 5. Discuss cultural differences that need to be considered for mothers and their families in the postpartum period.
