The DV036E BEVERAGE END BUCKLE & MISSILE GAUGE quickly and accurately destructively tests aluminium beverage can ends. The gauge has the capacity to test both seamed and free ends with the use of fast change parts.

Tests for Seamed Ends include:

• End Buckle.

• End Missile.

• End Rock.

• End Burst.

Test for Free Ends include:

• End Buckle.

• End Missile.

• End Burst

There is an additional testmode for Seamed & Free Ends that have a extremely small or indeterminate buckle

• Manual Mode.

Versatile Technology equipment is designed for ease of use and to allow quick and accurate tests. The DV036E BEVERAGE END BUCKLE & MISSILE GAUGE is no exception. Performing a test requires three simple steps:

Place end; Close door; Push start.

Upon completion of a test the results are displayed on the LCD for quick reference and automatically sent out the RS232 or Ethernet port for seamless evaluation in third party software.

Export of gauge table data is also available via the USB service port.

The gauge has an in built high pressure air intensifier unit eliminating the need for high pressure gas bottles.

Safety is of paramount importance to Versatile Technology. A comprehensive gauge safety checklist is included in this manual which we recommend is checked regally to ensure the continued safe operation of the gauge. The DV036E BEVERAGE END BUCKLE & MISSILE GAUGE features a fully enclosed cabinet that protects operators from the potential hazards inherent in pressurised destruction tests, such as flying debris. The high strength Polycarbonate widow allows operators a clear view of the test while door interlocks add a further level of protection. If the door is opened during a test all gauge movement immediately stops and pneumatic air is vented to atmosphere.

Following the correct procedureFollowing the correct procedureFollowing the correct procedureFollowing the correct procedure

1. Open the wooden crate and carefully remove support beams and packaging materials.

2. Remove the create sides and use a forklift to move the gauge into position. Ensure that the gauge is forked from

the front and the fork tynes protrude past the other side of the gauge. Special care should also be made to avoid

damaging the 4 feet.

3. Install the gauge on a level, flat surface away from excessive moisture and vibration. Ensure there is adequate

clearance at the rear of the gauge for connection of services. Ideally allow side clearance for servicing access.

4. Inspect the equipment and accessories. Check against the Shipping List to ensure that all parts have been

delivered.

5. Connect the shop air supply to the inlet port labelled SHOP AIR. The supply MUST be filtered and non

lubricated and have a pressure range of between a minimum of 6 BAR/600Kpa/90psi and a maximum of 8 BAR/

800Kpa/116psi. High Pressure test air is supplied by an internal intensifier. It is factory set to 1000kPa/145psi.

6. Connect the power lead to the connector on the gauge back panel and plug into an earthed (grounded) AC

voltage outlet. Ensure that the correct voltage has been delivered. Note the voltage on the rating plate on the

back panel. For maximum reliability a mains filter should be fitted to the mains supply to remove excessive

voltage fluctuations often found in industrial environments.

1. Place the Free End Mandrel open end down over the seal assembly. Ensure that the groove is facing forward

otherwise mandrel may jamb in the clamps.

2. With the Free End Mandrel mounted, place the desired change part on the mandrel.

Note that the gauge is supplied with 2 different change part styles - Steel or Rubber. These styles affect the way

the end is sealed imitating typical industry standards. The steel change part seals the end from direct force

against the compound. The rubber change part seals from direct force of the rubber ring against the curl. Both

change parts provide very similar results. Note that this is dependant on the end characteristics and may vary

from one product to the next. If you are in doubt as to which one to use please contact us..

3. Place an end onto the change part.

In this testmode the can is pressurized to a preset pressure.

When reached the tab is pulled causing the aperture to fail. A visual inspection is made to determine a pass or fail condition. Generally, any tab that remains attached to the end panel is considered a pass.

1. When a missile test is selected the tab of a seamed end must point to the LEFT HAND SIDE of the gauge and

the tab hook is placed onto the tab this is to allow the tab hook to pull the tab.

2. Close the door and press the START button

In this test the gauge measures the pressure at which the tab becomes level with the seam. A special sensor is placed onto the can whereby an electrical switch contact is made when the tab reaches the top of the seam.

Can PreparationCan PreparationCan PreparationCan Preparation

The top of the seam and the tab should be lightly sanded with emery cloth to ensure a reliable electrical contact. When the tab reaches the same height as the top of the seam the microprocessor detects continuity and reads the pressure at that point.

For non-CSD ends, which have a low buckle pressure or a very subtle dip in pressure at the buckle point, then this testmode should be enabled. The gauge uses a special transducer to monitor the growth distance of the sample as pressure increases.By using a rate of chance method, it monitors the deformation of the sample to detect the buckle failure point.

The growth change factor is used to determine how much of a change must occur for the detection of the buckle.

CalibrationCalibrationCalibrationCalibration

Calibration OverviewCalibration OverviewCalibration OverviewCalibration Overview

All gauges used for the purpose of process control and acceptance inspections should be regularly tested to ensure they are accurate, within calibration and capable of measuring the process.

Ensure that all equipment used to calibrate the gauge has been laboratory calibrated and its certification is traceable to national measurement standards.

Calibration Report and StickerCalibration Report and StickerCalibration Report and StickerCalibration Report and Sticker

At the completion of the calibration the results should be studied to ensure all parts of the gauge operate within specifications and a ‘calibrated’ sticker applied to the gauge indicating when the next calibration is due. Calibration reports should be filed for future reference.

When and how often should I calibrate? When and how often should I calibrate? When and how often should I calibrate? When and how often should I calibrate?

Calibration of the gauge should be conducted annually. It is recommended calibration be checked when the gauge is first commissioned, when any repair work has been performed that would affect calibration or if test results are suspect.

GAIN = Multiplier. Adjust this parameter when pressure is applied. Value on gauge display should be adjusted to pressure shown on the calibration device. Use a test pressure that is close to typical buckle pressures. I.e. 700kpa.

Use the check pressure routine after this adjustment is made to re-check linearity acorss the entire pressure range.

Pressure IntensifierPressure IntensifierPressure IntensifierPressure Intensifier

The Pressure Intensifier provides a high pressure air supply from standard factory shop air for use in pressure testing. It uses a pneumatic operated unit to pump the pressure up to 950 - 1000kPa.

The capacity of the Pressure Intensifier is very small and should only be used to supply small flows.

Set the air pressure using the regulator. The setting range is 950 - 1000kPa and should not be set beyond this.

Monthly MaintenanceMonthly MaintenanceMonthly MaintenanceMonthly Maintenance

Check the operation of the over pressure relief valve. to ensure it is not stuck.

The tank should be drained annually of any liquid that may have accumulated.

1. Remove the air supply

2. Turn off the shut off valve.

3. Pull the over pressure relief valve to release internal pressure.

4. Loosen the drain and allow for any liquid to drain out.

5. Retighten drain.

Fast and Slow Flow AdjustmentFast and Slow Flow AdjustmentFast and Slow Flow AdjustmentFast and Slow Flow Adjustment

This gauge is fitted with dual flow rates. This allows the test to consist of an initial fast flow up to a predetermined pressure. The gauge then automatically switches over to the slow flow rate until the end buckles.

The changeover point is software editable within the chosen profile.

Care should be taken during the adjustments as the slow and fast adjustments are interactive.

The slow rate should be adjusted first, then the fast rate. Flow rate is software editable within the chosen profile.
