Routes to School Canada.

ASRTS is described as:

“Active & Safe Routes to

School is a program of

Canada Walks, a depart-

ment of Green Communi-

ties Canada. Founded in

1995, Green Communities

Canada is a national

association of community

organizations that help

people go green – in their

homes and gardens, on

the road, at work, and in

the community. GCC and

its member organizations

work together to help

Canadians:

Improve the health of

our communities

Conserve resources for

future generations

Reduce pollution”

ASRTS lists the Steps To Success as the Five E’s, Education, Encouragement, Eng ineer ing , Enforcement and Evaluation.

Though, School Crossing Programs tend to fall under the Engineering category, don’t sell us short; we have much more to offer!

“Engineering

Goal: Creating safe and accessible school sites, neighbourhoods and routes to school. Stakeholders: school staff, boards, munic-ipalities Examples: traffic and wayfinder signs, park-ing restrictions, crosswalk improvements, crossing guards

Resources: Invite school

and municipal representa-

tives to complete a group

walkabout survey of the

neighbourhood to assess

traffic and identify built

environment barriers to

active travel. Many commu-

nities support ASRTS by

providing School Crossing

Guards at key intersections

near schools. The Ontario

Traffic Council’s School

Crossing Guard Guide

provides guidance on how

municipalities can deter-

mine the best loca-

t ions…” Read More at:

http://www.saferoutestoschool.ca/

There is also an educational

component/opportunity to

school crossing programs.

SC Guards help children

understand the importance

of road safety and develop

the skills needed to cross

streets in a safe manner at

all times. Helping to build the

confidence in our youngest

pedestrians will encourage

students’ desire to use AT

modes for school travel.

Opportunities exist within

communities to have Adult

School Crossing Guards

promote events such as

IWALK, Road Safety Training

School Outreach Programs

and School Travel Planning

Committees and much more.

The community connection

Guards share wi th their

pedestrians should not be

underestimated!

Operations Reminders

August Orientations have come and gone, but please keep in mind some of the various procedures discussed:

Contact Julie if you discover needles, etc. at your location. She has long-handled tongs and a proper sharps disposal bin in the car. Do NOT attempt to dispose of yourself.

Remind students to dismount bikes, remove earbuds and hold

Chester’s Tree - PITC Committee’s Memorial

onto all sporting equipment while crossing the roadway.

If at a signalized location, do not allow pedestrians to enter cross-walk once the flashing hand has begun it’s countdown.

NEW shirts are to be worn unless in the laundry; do not tuck and there is no need to wear your safety vests over these shirts. Must wear reflective armbands when wearing short-sleeved shirt.

The afternoon of Friday,

September 22 was very hot,

sunny and generally, a lovely

day to honour a wonderful

gentleman, Chester Murawski.

Former School Crossing

Guard and photographer for

SNAPd Niagara, was

honoured with a memorial tree

planting by Park In the City

Commit tee, in f ront of

Greendale School. The Mayor,

Niagara Falls MPP, several

fellow Crossing Guards were

in attendance for the event.
