Zwischen Struktur und Chaos – Pfadfindung in einer komplexen Welt

Die KISDtalks erforschen verschiedene Wege der Orien-

tierung in einer zunehmend komplexen analogen und

digitalen Welt.

Dies können sauber strukturierte und dabei hoch

artistische Gestaltungen in der Information Architecture

sein – aber auch verschlungene Pfade, wie sie die

Behavioral Economics oder „Choice Architecture“ in den

oft von Selbstbetrug gekennzeichneten Wegen der

individuellen Entscheidungsfindung gestalten.

Nicht zuletzt öffnen wir Einblick in die vagen und eher

assoziativen Experimente im Umgang mit Notationen, die

einer intuitiven Orientierung den Raum öffnen.

We will explore ways of finding paths through complex

environments.

This can be clean and clear structures – like in information

architecture. It can be psychological self-deception, which is

revealed in behavioral economics or “choice

architecture”.

Or it can be by vague and more associative embrace of the

unstructured and the evolution of new and innovative ways

of bringing orientation into our world.

Bernd Weber studied medicine in Bonn and earned his

doctorate with a study into the pathological causes of

central nervous system diseases. Since 2005 he has been

leading the Department for Structural and Functional

Imaging of the Brain at the Life&Brain Center. For some

years he has been working intensively on a new discipline

of neuroscience with psycholgists and economists, i.e. on

the biological principles of economic decision behavior

and their related issues.

Weber is co-founder and a board member of the Center

for Economics and Neuroscience at the University of Bonn,

publisher of the Journal for Neuroscience Psychology and

Economics and chair for Germany of the Neuromarketing

Business Association. Since July 2010 he has held a

Heisenberg Professorship for Neuro-Economics at the

Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn, which is funded

by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Neuro-economics is a new interdisciplinary field that

seeks to explain human behavior in a social and economic

context using the methods of neuroscience, economics

and psychology.

The area of neuro-marketing, or consumer neuroscience

focuses particularly on the consumer’s behavior.

What influences consumers when making decisions? What

processes take place in the brain when making purchase

decisions?

What decisions affect consumer behavior?

What are placebo effects in marketing and how do they

affect how consumers perceive products, their willingness

to pay, and consumption as a whole? Can consumer

decisions be predicted by means of neuroscientific

technology?

Communication rarely works optimally.

An infinite multiplicity of cultural and social factors can

impede the dialog between designer, client and customer.

This talk will focus on identifying common alliances and

activating inner images. This involves conclusive thinking

, the converting of mistakes, and discovering unexpected

changes.

As a prelude to the short-term project The Whistle-Blowing

Object from October 20 to 31, Paul Steinmann will present

selected works completed after his graduation as well as

current projects from his design studio David & Paul.

Paul Steinmann was born in Trier. From 2002-2008 he

studied communication design at Staatliche Hochschule

für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe.

Having worked as a freelancer in New York, as well as a

freelancer and guest lecturer at the Intermedia Design

Department of Trier University of Applied Sciences,

Steinmann worked as art director for the Cologne agency

Meiré und Meiré. Since 2013 Steinmann has been leading

the design studio David & Paul in Cologne together with

David Eckes. His clients have included Museum Ludwig,

Red Bull Music Academy, and Theaterhaus Jena. His works

have received multiple awards. Paul is an ADC Young Gun

X winner and a member of the Art Directors Club New York.

Marijn van Oosten (1986) is entrepreneur and is visualizing the source.

Visual means from strategy, till experience design and fine art.

Source means: how do you bring people (and clients) on their source, so they are living maximum in their potential.

This is how she created the design Paper Pathfinder (3D pathfinding for Rijks Museum with support from ING, first edition 120.000 pieces), that is nominated as finalist Dutch Design Award 2014.

In this lecture the design Paper Pathfinder will be used as

example to discover how design can create flow for users,

in this case the visitors of Rijks Museum.

The Paper Pathfinder is a 3D paper miniature building

of the Rijks Museum that visitors use to find their way

through this complex building.

Designer Marijn van Oosten, who is living in Amsterdam

and New York, will explain how the design process went

to create the product Paper Pathfinder and how visitors

are responding and reacting.

It is very important to connect with the client and

sponsor, therefore the experience of this collaboration

will be explained too.

And what is exactly flow? How can you create a balance

between the brain and heart so there is a structure, but

also freedom? This will be all clear in the lecture “Path

finding with flow”.

Erik van Buuren is a sustainable business expert

developing and implementing sustainability strategies

and products thereby focussing on detoxification of

products and material management models for a circular

economy. Erik holds a M.Sc. in Materials Science &

Technology and a MBA; he teaches environmental and

social management at various European universities;

is jury member of the official German Design Prize

and is a recognised Cradle-to-Cradle® manager and

trainer. Besides his consulting activities he develops

sustainable prototypes and products. Erik was born in the

Netherlands, grew up in England and Brazil and currently

lives in Berlin.

Climate change is affecting all of us.

This Tuesday Talk is all about power generation,

geographic differences, the sources, renewable options

and how to incorporate energy in the design process.

Wie weit lassen sich Projekte planen, ohne in die Irre zu

führen, Wie die guten Wege finden, navigieren etc.?

Wie unterscheiden sich diese Wege in unterschiedlichen

Feldern und Umgebungen? Wann ist es gut geradeaus zu

gehen, wann sind Umwege kürzer, und wie weit können

wir das Ergebnis und den Weg dahin kontrollieren?

Manchmal hilft es dabei nach den Sternen zu gucken,

manchmal verliert man dabei die Orientierung …

Überlegungen und Erfahrungen zum Thema Chaos,

Struktur und wie man einen Weg findet, anhand

von drei Projekten aus dem Produktdesign, der

Veranstaltungsplanung und der Lehre.

Karen Donndorf lebt und arbeitet in Berlin in ihrem

Studio donndorf design.

Sie entwirft dort Produkte (u.a. Möbel, Geräte, Taschen)

und organisiert Veranstaltungen zum Thema Design.

Nebenher unterrichtet sie regelmäßig an der Weißensee

Kunsthochschule Berlin und an der Chinesisch-Deutschen

Kunstakademie (CDK) in Hangzhou.

Sie hat an der Akademie in Stuttgart bei Klaus Lehmann

und Richard Sapper Produktdesign studiert. Anschließend

arbeitete sie bei diversen Designbüros auf so unterschied-

lichen Feldern wie Sanitärtechnik, Interieur, Werkzeug-

maschinen, Licht, Ausstellungsdesign und Veranstal-

tungsplanung. Sie war vier Jahre bei designtransfer an

der Universität der Künste Berlin für Veranstaltungen und

Kooperationen zuständig.

Strategic environments can be simple (known-knowns),

complicated (unknown-knowns), complex (unknown-

unknowns) or chaotic (unknowables). However, strategic

actions have to be simple (only ‘known-knowns’ can be

implemented) even if the consequences of those actions

might be uncertain to varying degrees.

How do we identify and distil simple strategic actions

from real strategic environments? How do we ‘validate’

these actions so that we are confident that 1. they can

theoretically be implemented; 2. they will definitely

work; 3. they will be worth it?

This workshop will answer these questions based

on the principles of Validating Strategies

Phil DriverDr Phil Driver facilitates multi-stakeholder strategy

development, validation and implementation processes

in New Zealand and the UK. He works in both the public

and private sectors, especially in large-scale complex

strategic environments where there are many stakehol-

ders with diverse and often completing demands. He is

author of the recently published book Validating Strate-

gies which provides the basis for his strategy workshops

and Master classes in Germany, the UK and NZ.

Phil holds degrees in science and engineering plus

qualifications and extensive experience in organisational

strategies and company directing.

The ever-growing complexity of our world and the

proceeding interpenetration of all physiological,

psychological and technological systems towards ever-

changing structures of reality no longer generates fear –

it has become a yet immeasurable source of inspiration

and creation.

We do not know anymore. We think.

The eversion of our memory into the always-available

machine is done. Now the transcoding of our vacant brain

capacities has to be advanced.

What was static becomes fluid.

Our disorientation does not mean a deficit, it is the first

delirium of joy of the gravitational liberated.

Life is a floating condition.

We warmly embrace uncertainty and welcome its mind

expanding potential. Orientation in complex or seemingly

chaotic structures demands for cultivating strategies.

We try to dance and play where others may try to fight

and master. Chaos can be a friend if we do not get

overwhelmed by its disintegrating tendencies. It gives

birth to the new and the unknown.

RaumZeitPiraten is an audiovisual, space and time bending artists

collective and ongoing project of Tobias Daemgen, Jan

Ehlen and Moritz Ellerich. Since 2007 they work as a group

and in changing constellations with artists of other

professions. With their site-specific, performative

installations they create ephemeral models of unperfect

mensch-maschine counter worlds questioning calculated

realities, scientific accurateness and anorganic, machine

dominated behaviour.

With custom-built opto-acoustic instruments they are

misusing and remixing ancient and up-to-date auditive

and visual technologies for heterogeneous, organically

improvised light and sound architectures. Their activities

are aimed at playful, experimental connections of sound,

image, object, space and time to an alternately-self-ex-

panding-multimedia-performance-surround-

spaceship-laboratory-travel to somewhere between

science and fiction.

At SapientNitro we help brands connect with consumers

through digital experiences. In order to understand our

approach, it is important to acknowledge that „experience“

is a multidimensional psychological state of an individual

that evolves over repeated interactions with the brand; it is

not a static characteristic of a single touchpoint.

The creative challenge is to design for human emotion,

reason and behavior and tell a coherent story throughout

an ecosystem of touchpoints. Across the customer journey

many design decisions have to be made, each influencing

what consumers are ultimately going to experience.

Making these decisions is complicated, because human

experience is inherently subjective and unique for each

person. How can we be confident that we will provide a

meaningful experience to every individual consumer?

This talk suggests tools and methods for facilitating

decision making from initial idea to final product in the

domain of digital experience design.

Patrick Esser holds a masters degree in cognitive and

social psychology from University Maastricht with a

specialization in human-computer interaction.

He has 7 years of professional experience in planning and

creating digital products and services for brands such as

SAP, Lufthansa, Telekom, Miele, Deka Investments, Audi,

Egmont Ehapa and Deutsche Post.

At SapientNitro Patrick is responsible for crafting solutions

that strengthen the brand-consumer relation through

innovative digital services.

He believes in a human-centered approach as a means to

design experiences that matter. His toolbox includes

methods from design thinking, service design, user

research, usability engineering, and lean startup.

Agnes Meyer Brandis’ poetic-scientific investigations

weave fact, imagination, storytelling and myth, past,

present and future. Ten years ago she founded the

ResearchRaft FFUR, a permanently altering

meta-installation and Institute for Art and Subjective

Science.

The institute deals with artistic reality research that

manifests itself as performances, lectures and installations.

One can have encounters with the institute in tents, on

boats, on islands, on a zero gravity plane of the German

Aerospace Agency, at conferences, in museums, or even

on a glacier.

The lecture introduces several alternative means of space

traveling, one of them even dating way back as to the 17th

century - the age of enlightenment and transformed into

the 21th century.

Agnes Meyer-Brandis, born 1973 in Aachen, Germany,

studied mineralogy for a year, then transfered to the Art

Academy in Maastricht, the Düsseldorf Art Academy and

the Cologne Media Art Academy. She comes from a

background of both sculpture and new media art.

Her work, exhibited worldwide and awarded, is at the

experimental edge of art and science, exploring the zone

between fact and fiction. Agnes Meyer-Brandis is the

founder of the “Forschungsfloss FFUR / Research Raft for

Subterranean Reefology“, a small institute whose chief

aim is to explore and confirm subterranean phenomena

and unknown lifeforms. Since 2007 her focus of

investigation moved into higher altitude with their

connected realities.

She realized an artistic experiment in weightlessness in

cooperation with the German Space Agency DLR. In 2011

she started to breed Moon Geese in Italy.

Raumwahrnehmung ist vornehmlich visuell geprägt –

zum einen über die direkte Umweltrezeption mit den

Augen, zum anderen vermittelt über zweidimensionale

Abbildungstechniken. Letztere fungieren dabei nicht nur

als neutrale Stellvertreter – in ihnen wird Räumlichkeit

immer auch aktiv konstruiert.

Fotografische Aufzeichnungen stellen eine immer

wichtiger werdende Repräsentationstechnik zur

Wiedergabe auch größerer Orts-Bezüge dar.

Mit Einführung des öffentlich zugänglichen Satelliten-

bilddienstes „Google Earth“ wurde die zeichnerisch-

abstrahierte Darstellung von Umwelt in Karten und Plänen

um fotografische Abbildungen erweitert – mit „Street

View“ zudem aus Augenhöhe.

Die sogenannten Foto-Kartendienste konstruieren Raum

nicht mehr nur im einzelnen Bild, sondern mittels serieller

Aufnahmeverfahren in der strukturierten Fügung vieler

Aufnahmen. Die Anbieter dieser Dienste haben nach

eigener Aussage nicht weniger im Sinn als hiermit eine

neue Umweltepräsentation der Erde zu etablieren.

Das Verstehen der methodischen Ansätze dieser und

anderer fotografisch basierter Ersatzrealitäten macht es

möglich, innerhalb der Logik dieser Bildkonstruktionen

selbst einen kreativen Gestaltungsprozesses anstoßen zu

können.

Philipp Reinfeld ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am

Institut für Mediales Entwerfen des Departments Archi-

tektur an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig.

Er studierte Architektur an der Technischen Universität

Berlin und an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in

Nürnberg.

Von 1999 bis 2005 leitete er gemeinsam mit Arne Mittig

das Büro Mittig/Reinfeld für Kunst und Architektur in

Berlin. 2003 erhielt er für seine städtebauliche Arbeit „Im

Osten ‘was Neues“ einen Förderpreis des Bundes Deut-

scher Baumeister (BDB).

2004 war er an der Planung für die kantonübergreifende

„Netzstadt Mittelland“ am Stadtbauamt Aarau (Schweiz)

beteiligt. Von 2006 bis 2007 arbeitete er als künstlerischer

Mitarbeiter beim Aufbaustudiengang für Architektur und

Stadtforschung „a42.org“ an der Akademie der Bildenden

Künste in Nürnberg. Seit 2006 ist er Partner im Archi-

tekturbüro BOOM (ehemals ERA) in Berlin. Als aktiver

Teilnehmer des „Netzwerks Architekturtheorie“ arbeitet

Philipp Reinfeld unter dem Titel „Photopology –

Bitmapping Space“ derzeit an der Fertigstellung seiner

Dissertation.

Structure is a prerequisite to meaning. The absence of a

perceived, recognisable structure usually leaves us with a

profound feeling of helplessness and often anxiety.

But meaning also creates structure. It creates order where

there otherwise is complication.

Meaning usually is the foundation for constructing reality.

It helps us to make sense of the world and its artifacts

and decode their complexity. Meaning is the most

fundamental strategy to help us cope with the inherent

differentness of everything other than ourselves.

Suggesting the significance of meaning in perception,

access and use of artifacts, the question becomes, how can

we as designers handle meaning?

Do we have to consider meaning as the one lynchpin

aspect for the creation of artifacts? Are we able to use

meaning as a method to distinguish between the plausible

in contrast to the possible? Are we able to create meaning

for others at all?

We will discuss the role of meaning in the ideation and

creation of artifacts and its potentials to offer structure for

others.

Stefan Karp is a user experience and interaction designer

from Frankfurt Main. In 1999 he founded the design

studio ma ma interactive system design. As a managing

partner Stefan Karp works on a broad range of projects

with focus on the relationship between artifacts and

man, on meaning, on how and why things work and

eventually – how to make them better. His areas of

expertise are digital design, ideation and R&D in fields

such as digital products, home appliances, capital goods,

medical appliances and technology in general. He held

teaching positions at various universities including a

professorship at the university of Kaiserslautern for

»ubiquitous computing« and frequently gives talks on

user experience and interaction design related topics. He

emphasises on the importance of human-centered and

context aware design solutions. To him they are the key

to a meaningful user experience and to a user-friendly

non-technology. Stefan Karp graduated in 1994 from the

Offenbach University of Art and Design with a diploma in

product design.

Lyn Godley began her career in fine arts, then spent the

next 20 years working as a designer, bringing form and

beauty to functional objects. Her work has crossed the

borders of interiors, product, furniture, lighting, jewelry,

and fine art. Her designs, done both individually and

as partner of Godley-Schwan (1984-1998) with the late

Lloyd Schwan, have been exhibited internationally. The

Crinkle Lamp, the last piece designed jointly by Godley

and Schwan, was accepted into the permanent collection

at the Museum of Modern Art in 1998. Her work is also

in numerous public and private collections. Godley has

won numerous awards, and has been reviewed in major

international publications.

In addition to her studio work, she has been active in

educating future designers. For 15 years she taught

Product Design at Parsons School of Design in NYC, as

well at Kutztown University, and is currently an Associate

Professor of Industrial Design at Philadelphia University.

Emily Dickinson zur digitalisierten Handschrift.

K. beschäftigt sich in seinen Werken mit einer Ordnung,

die ins Absurde getrieben wird.

Er gilt als Kritiker von Bürokratie, schreibt aber beruflich

selbst Versicherungsgesetze und ist von der Gesetzgebung

des Deutschen Reiches um 1900 positiv beeindruckt.

D. geht nicht aus dem Haus, trägt immer Weiß und gilt

als eine der originellsten und gleichzeitig chaotischsten

Dichterinnen ihrer Zeit in den USA. Ihre Gedichte folgen

keinen grammatikalischen Regeln und sind erst nach

mehrmaligem Lesen zu verstehen.

Julia Sysmäläinen erzählt von ihrer Arbeit mit den

Handschriften der beiden Dichter und die Wegfindung zu

einer Balance zwischen Logik einer Computerschrift und

der Lebendigkeit das Original-Materials.

Julia Sysmäläinen ist Philologin und Designerin mit

finnisch-russischen Wurzeln.

Sie arbeitet bei Eden Spiekermann und betreibt

gleichzeitig ihre “Carelian type foundry in the middle of

Berlin” unter dem Motto: “Working hard to get quality and

humor together in type design”.

Sie entwickelte Pictogramm-Systeme für ICS Bank,

RaboDirekt Bank, Sentres, visitBerlin und WineStein.

Ihre Schriftfamilie FF Mister K, inspiriert durch

Manuskripte von Franz Kafka, ist vielfach gewürdigt

worden (Modern Cyrillic Award, ISTD Premier Award,

TDC Certificate of Excellence in Typeface Design).

Bei Bewegungen, denen eines Körperteils zum Beispiel,

handelt es sich meistens um etwas, dem man eine gewisse

Wiederholbarkeit unterstellt. Auch die Kartografie als

Wissenschaft folgt dem Anspruch, eine Vorhersagbarkeit

bzw. Beherrschbarkeit innezuhaben, die ein Phänomen

durch Beobachtung verifiziert. Kartografien,

Wegbeschreibungen und auch Notationen dienen dazu,

dem Lesenden eine Orientierung in einem unendlichen

Feld der Möglichkeiten zu bieten.

Trotzdem handelt es sich bei der Beschreibung einer

Bewegung im darstellenden Kontext oft nur um eine

Annäherung des Möglichen. Denn eine Improvisation

oder eine Tanzbewegung kann in den seltensten Fällen

so notiert werden, dass eine Kopie durch jemand anderen

ihrem wahren Charakter nahekommt.

Im Rahmen meiner Abschlussarbeit habe ich eine

Komposition und das Notationsverfahren der Endless

Notation entwickelt und in Workshops und Experimenten

mit Musikern, Tänzern und Schauspielern verfeinert. Das

Ergebnis ist eine Exploration von moderner Notation, die

das geschlossene Werk hinterfragt und eine zeitgemäße

Transdisziplinarität fordert.

Bei der Endless Notation geht es um die Visualisierung

einer Gesamtform, um Proportionen, um Zustände und

Ausdrücke, um dynamische Verläufe und agogische

Grade. Es geht um eine Mischung aus Durchführbarkeit

und Tiefsinnigkeit, wobei der Fokus auf dem praktischen

Experiment liegt. Mit der Entwicklung von neuer Musik

und neuen Ausdrucksformen, zeitgenössischem Tanz

Charlotte Triebus graduierte an der Köln International

School of Design und der schwedischen Linköping

Universitetet. Sie arbeitet als Visual Communication

Designer, Art Director und Fotokünstlerin mit ihrem

Kollektiv in Köln für Kunden und Design Studios aus ganz

Europa (IDEO München, cusanuswerk, Universität

Oldenburg, Theaterhaus Stuttgart, UNCCD, viaroeper,

Bremen, Storleden, Schweden). Ihr aktuelles Projekt

beschäftigt sich mit der Schnittstelle von Tanz, Musik und

deren Visualisierung.

und einer neuen Ästhetik der Performance wird auch in

der Notation nach aktuellen Ausdrucksweisen gesucht.

Führt man diesen Gedanken weiter, kommt man zu dem

Schluss, dass die ›moderne‹ Notation, losgelöst von der

Aufführungsart eine freie Ausführung provozieren und

produzieren kann, etwa einer Ausführung von Bewegung,

einer musikalischen oder lichttechnischen Installation,

der Konstruktion von Gebäuden, alles basierend auf dem

selben Schema, das in den jeweiligen Kontext gesetzt

wird. Die Arbeit des Komponisten wird also mehr und

mehr zur Arbeit des Konzeptkomponisten, der z.T. gar

nicht mehr vorsieht, welche Art der Performance letztlich

angewandt wird, um seine Ideen zum Ausdruck zu

bringen. Dabei sind die Interpreten nicht nur Teilhaber

sondern werden aktiv eingebunden als kreative Faktoren

– aus der Passivität in eine geleitete Aktivität.
