The MMGM will be a world class Museum focused on preserving and exhibiting Maine mineral specimens, gemstones, and historical documents that tell the story of Maine’s mining history. Never before has this history been told in one place and this extensively.
The MMGM exhibits will tell the complete story of mining, minerals, and gems; how minerals form, found, and mined; the historical and current in-dustrial uses for minerals; and the art of cutting gems and creating jewelry. This will be the world’s most extensive collection, exhibits, and archival documents of Maine mining, minerals, and gems in one location. Miner tours will allow a “start to finish” experience of this fascinating field. The Museum store will allow visitors to own many of the types of Maine miner-als and gems on display. From simple and inexpensive gifts and souvenirs to spectacular, unique and custome designed and custom ordered items.
In addition, the MMGM will feature exhibitions of out of this world meteorites, fossils, and other minerals.

Publisher’s NoteThank you for picking up the Winter Issue of Bethel Living Magazine! This is the time of year when Bethel glowingly bustles with activity. More than half of our winter population is from away, arriving here to frolic in our wonderful snow and celebrate the Holidays with family and friends. In the Bethel Area we know how to celebrate winter with skis, sleigh rides, hot mulled cider and crackling fires. Our village is THE place to be when the snow falls!
In this issue we have articles on Mt Abram’s new model for ski area survival, and the craziness of the Red Bull Frozen Rush event at Sunday River in January. We report on the cozy SS Milton restaurant, and share the history of Ski Depot and the Jacques brothers. We also delve into Back Country Skiing with Carter’s X-C Ski Centers, pass along some holiday dinner suggestions, and deliver the area events listing.
Bethel Living is published quarterly and distributed as a free publication thanks to the support of our advertis-ers and contributors. My appreciation runs deep for everyone involved and I extend my sincere gratitude to my amazing support team.

For almost 30 years Hurricane Ski Slope in Falmouth, Maine in-troduced thousands of people to the sport of skiing -- until it closed in the early 1970’s. Just down Route 1, Mt. Agamenticus (The Big A) in York, Maine sold season passes for $60 -- until it shut down in 1974. Hobb’s Hill, Mt. Quito, Devil’s Den -- bygone names on the list of lost ski areas that used to dot the map of Maine; more than 70 in all. Nationwide, thousands of small areas -- some no more than a rope tow and a fire pit -- have given way to the mega-resort and destination skiing.
Here in our corner of the Western Maine mountains we’re lucky enough to still have four ski areas within a 40 minute drive from downtown Bethel. From large to small each spot has it’s own charms -- the special magic that makes generations of skiers return year after year to celebrate the sport. And no mountain has a more intensely loyal fan base than Mt Abram, located in nearby Greenwood, where a new ownership model is taking shape.
With approximately 5 different owners over the past 20 years, it became clear last spring that Mt Abram would require a more stable financial model going forward. Enter Jamie Schectman and Dave Scanlan, founders of the Mountain Riders Alliance, a new entity with a focus on the preservation of small and mid-size community ski ar-eas. Their mission is to develop values based, environmentally-friend-ly, rider-centric “Mountain Playgrounds” that encourage minimal carbon footprint business practices and alternative energy creation, while making a positive impact in the local community.
The Mountain Riders Alliance was hired to manage operations at Mt Abram for the 2013-2014 season, and at the same time oversee the formation of a community based co-operative of 200-300 mem-bers to purchase and operate the area in future seasons. The results of a 2012 customer survey meshed with MRA’s vision to create a “Mountain Playground” under community ownership, administered by a board-run cooperative that will preserve the long-term goals of
the area and it’s residents.A “Mountain Playground” has several components: first, it’s
a place for riders (the combined term for skiers and snowboarders) which focuses on uphill transportation and downhill fun. Second, it harnesses the know-how of volunteers and active community mem-bers to provide cutting-edge green energy generating systems. Third, an increased emphasis on year round activities. And finally, this mod-el, which Scanlan and Schectman have been working on for over 3 years, envisions co-ops such as Mt Abram benefiting from shared best practices, volume discounts, cross-marketing and consolidated servic-es with other small mountain co-ops. Combining as few as three small ski areas under one umbrella reduces the cost of everything from insurance and marketing to grooming equipment and food services. Reduced expenses and increased profits will enable small ski areas to thrive, a great outcome for all the players in the snow sports industry.
Green energy initiatives are nothing new for Mt Abram, as evi-denced by winning the 2012 Environmental Excellence Golden Ea-gle Award for small resorts from the National Ski Areas Association. Their wood pellet burner system, purchased locally from Maine En-ergy Systems in Bethel, produces radiant heat throughout the lodge floor using locally sourced pellet fuel. In another bid for clean energy Mt Abram installed an electric vehicle charger next to the lodge for their use as well as the use of customers with electric cars. Future plans feature an expansion to convert other mountain vehicles to elec-trical operations as well.
Another exciting development was the award from the USDA of a Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Grant of $235,000 to in-stall 869 solar panels. Construction will begin Spring 2014, likely across the street in the overflow parking lot. The installation will offset annual energy usage for snow making and lift operations, as well as all other mountain operations. Electricity is by far the greatest expense in the snow sports industry (after payroll), with prices constantly rising. This

system allows Mt Abram to reduce costs through long-term payback.
Passion and excitement are building at Mt Abram for the new season and the new direction. Hoping to draw more families and
racers from around the Portland area and across southern Maine,
there will be extended hours of operation on Thursdays and Fridays until 7pm.Thursday nights will continue to have Pizza night, and Fri-day evenings will feature a Town League Racing program with com-petition from 5-7pm followed by live music from 8-10pm.
Take time to slide into the West Side Lodge, the Loose Boots Lounge or the Main Lodge Cafeteria to check out the restructured menus offering healthier choices and tastier treats.
Thursdays will feature the best Learn-to-Ski or Snowboard deal around: lesson, lift ticket and rentals for $25. Families can leave their little ones with Deb Doyle (owner of Bethels Hostel), the new Day Care Manager. Tubing is fun for all on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays.
On the operations front, Mt Abram has just purchased a new second groomer, and snow will be made on Lower Easy Rider this season to enable better connectivity from the West Side Lodge.
Opening Day is Friday, December 13th for season pass holders only -- with everyone else invited to join in the next day.
Community will be the focus for the future Mt Abram, with Jamie as the Marketing Director and Dave as Mountain Operations Man-ager working with all interested parties to forge strong partnerships in what Jamie refers to as a pot-luck mentality, or a “filling the karma basket”. The timing is perfect -- Mt Abram is sure to reap what they sow. Thanks to the Mountain Rider’s Alliance, Mt Abram is now the incubator of family ski area preservation..

Red Bull Frozen Rush redefines snowsports by bring-ing a new head-to-head off-road race to the slopes. Eight
9 0 0 - h o r s e p o w e r Pro4 trucks will defy the wintery condi-tions to rip figure eights, fly off jumps and climb snowy inclines at Maine’s Sunday River re-sort. Eight drivers will test their skills on uncharted terri-tory in search of a mountain champ.
From 10am to 2pm right here in Newry, skiers and snowboarders will share the contours of Sunday River’s South Ridge with he best off-road drivers on the
planet and their 4x4 trucks blazing the trails and dodging slalom gates. The race format will be a bracketed, single elimina-tion with two drivers on course at a time. The United States Auto Club has sanc-tioned the race and will oversee the com-petition to ensure that Frozen Rush will be an amazing experience for both spectators and competitors alike. Walk up viewing is free and welcomed.
On top of the race you’ll find Après Hap-py Hours in the Red Bull Show Hauler, ex-clusive tours of the off-road truck pit lanes, driver meet and greets, and a parties at the Foggy Goggle all as part of a big week of festivities and racing action. See the Red Bull Frozen Rush web site for more infor-mation and complete event schedules.
Off-road truck racing is normally re-served for the dirt speedways of summer, spring and fall, but there is nothing usual about Red Bull Frozen Rush. First explored by three-time TORC Series Champion Ricky Johnson in February 2013 at Mount Snow ski resort in West Dover, Vt., the 49-year-

old former motocross and supercross athlete enjoyed the challenge of taking on uncharted territory like soft snow, steep terrain, ice and freezing temperatures and wanted more off-road drivers to experience the thrill.
“I was really inspired by what my Pro4 could do when
challenged with the unique terrain earlier this year. 2013 was a small step to the real thing,” said Johnson. “I’m excited to see what these trucks are made of when the ac-tion of racing in a head-to-head is thrown in there. There is a lot to look forward to.”
Conquering the slopes doesn’t come without its set of technical challenges. Each racing truck must be specifically modified in order to adapt to the harsh weather conditions. One-of-a-kind, studded and spe-cially designed Mud-Terrain tires from BFGoodrich’s Research and Development team will arm the veteran motorsports racers as they attempt the nearly mile long course, rising over 550 vertical feet before begin-
ning their decent.Red Bull Frozen Rush will air on NBC in 2014 as part of
the Red Bull Signature Series.

As the owner/operators of Lakewood Camps at Middle Dam in Errol, Maine for 27 years, Sue and Steve Milton learned a thing or two about of-fering quality food and hospital-ity to their guests. After selling
the camp and moving to the Bethel area they continued to hone their management and operations skills in the food service industry at the renowned Walsh & Hill Steakhouse and several other local eateries.
As their appreciation for the subtleties of finer cuisine grew Stan and Sue became passionate about the variety and complexity of fla-vors from the sea. They also fell in love with the Bethel Commu-nity and began to look for a situation that would enable them to use their business and culinary talents most profitably. So when Mother’s Restaurant in downtown Bethel went up for sale they jumped at the chance to begin a new venture with a focus on fresh lobster and fish.
Their offering to the dining scene in Bethel, dubbed the SS Mil-
ton, is located in the heart of downtown and offers the charm of an 1850’s home, with four small dining rooms. It presents visiting guests with a comfort and coziness unlike anywhere else. Stop in and visit with Sue and Steve Milton soon. You’ll find them and their com-fortable eatery a peaceful and relaxing treasure that brings the grace notes of the Maine coast into the heart of the mountains.
Chef ’s Signature Items include Apple Jack Onion Soup made with apple cider, a touch of Apple Jack Brandy and topped with a parmesan crouton, provolone and swiss cheese. Carribean Shrimp consists of sautéed shrimp with a spicy blend and served with a tropi-cal fruit sauce. Special Entrees include Boothbay Fettucini which is Maine lobster, Sea Scallops and Gulf Shrimp in a white wine cream sauce, over Fettucini. Scallops Nantucket is Sea Scallops baked with white wine, lemon, cheddar cheese and topped with a Ritz Cracker topping. Favored Desserts are Raspberry Bread Pudding and Maine Wild Blueberry Crisp.

New Location at Sunday River!
111 Skiway Road (Previously Jack Frost), Newry, Maine12 Riley Road (US Route 4), Jay Maine
Ron and Kenny Jacques probably never heard the ad-age “do what you love and success will follow” because the noise at their jobs in a Jay, Maine paper mill kept conversation to a minimum. But this story of two brothers with a passion for skiing and a knack for technology gives new vigor to that trite advice.
One powdery day back in 1996 Ron and Kenny spent a
super day ripping up Sugarloaf Mountain on skis, enjoying their favorite sport and having a great time. On their way home the discussion turned to the lack of a good place to purchase ski equip-ment despite the fact that, at the time, there were two established ski shops in Jay and several more on the road to Sugarloaf. By the end of that snowy ride the basic plan for Jay’s third ski shop was inscribed on the back of an envelope -- or some scrap of paper scrounged off the car floor.
Ron’s interest in computer technology paid off twice as the brothers put their plan in motion. Before heading to the Provi-dence Ski Show, Ron created a computer presentation with a map showing the existing retail ski outlets surrounding Jay and ideas on how to do things better. They left Maine thinking they might entice two suppliers but drove home with backing from Atomic, Elan, Head, K2, Dynastar, Lang, Koflach, Tyrolia and more!
The first store opened with pocket change in the drawer, four dozen pairs of skis and six dozen pairs of boots. Sales were steady, but the snowy winter of 1996 was followed by a couple years of less than stellar conditions on the slopes. They still had their jobs at the mill, and so, hoping to expand their sales reach Ron purchased the ‘ski-depot.com’ domain name in 1997.
While many people wondered who in the world would buy skis using a computer, the brother’s quit the mill, shipped their first pair of skis in 1998 and never looked back. As early adopters in the bonanza of on-line retailing ski-depot.com quickly became Fisher ski’s largest retail dealer, and for a period of time, the third largest e-tailer in the country. Ski Depot currently sells and ships over 3,000 pairs of skis to customers around the world with many of their skis ending up as far away as China.
The Jay ski shop continued to grow, currently employing a
dozen people and necessitating a move into a larger building situated along the Androscoggin River, but other attempts at local expansion into traditional brick and mortar stores were short lived. Then, this past summer, just before the 4th of July, the Jacques boys received a call from Fred Cowan, the owner of Jack Frost, a popular retail store on the Sunday River access road. Fred was looking to sell his location and knew that Ski Depot would be an excellent company to service his customer base. Ron and Kenny jumped at the op-portunity, offering Sunday River skiers a place to find volume ski prices at a familiar venue.
Ski Depot brings a huge selection of equipment to the new store, catering to racers and freestylers, all skiers new and old -- there is something for every skier on the hill. Freeriders will be stoked with the amazing assortment of Line skis and Full Tilt boots. Kenny Jacques is personally overseeing all operations, with Hakan Adams at the helm in the bootfitting department. A full ser-vice tuning shop downstairs will take care of binding adjustments, ski tuning and maintenance with Jeffrey “Dewey” Dewhurst and Bruce Cummings manning the counter.
The mission to create a truly great ski shop that customers trust and return to time and again is just as important today as it was on that car ride 16 years ago. Stop in and see why Ski Depot at Sun-day River and the crew that run it will be your new favorites.
Kenny Jacques

Want to try the latest trend for on-snow enthusiasts? Get over to Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center and put some Back Country skis on your feet!
Back Country skis are wider, have more shape, are more stable and come with or without metal edges. BC boots and bindings fea-ture a more solid connection to the ski, enabling skiers to get onto less populated trails and ski with more floatation in deeper snow. A visit to Carter’s offers many trails designated for Back Country skiing and snowshoeing.
With over 30 years in business the Carter family has established locations in Bethel and Oxford; each with it’s own full-service ski shop and unique ski trails. They sell and rent snowshoes as well as BC, touring and racing skis for everyone in the family.
The Oxford shop offers one of the largest selections of quality ski equipment and accessories in New England -- they have exact-ly what you need to take joy in this winter wonderland. Outside, find 25km of groomed nature trails running through pristine fields and woods. Ideal for beginners and people who want to snowshoe, and open all winter 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm.
The newly built 24’ x 24’ 2-story timber frame addition at Carter’s Bethel location houses the rental shop and the only full service Nordic ski shop in the Bethel area. Spectacular views
abound as the 45km of groomed trails wander along the Big An-drscoggin River, then roll and wind their way through open fields and beautiful woodlands. The best views from any ski area in Maine await as you climb up Farwell Mountain to reveal the mag-nificence of Grafton Notch and a majestic look at the Presidential Range. Choose to descend through deep snow BC terrain or glide your way back on the groomed corduroy.
Book an overnight stay in the new ski lodge, or one of three off-grid trailside cabins. Guests at the lodging sites receive a free trails pass for use at either location. Please call ahead for hours of operation at 207-539-4848.
The Carter family’s goal is to make cross country skiing a part of your life; to enjoy the sport as they do. They look forward to seeing you out on the snow very soon.
