Dear Friends,

As you read this, Bethany Hill School is well into our 22nd year as a living and learning community of neighbors.  Founded in 1994 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, we inherit the Sisters’ legacy of compassion, respect, inclusion, and acceptance.  Indeed, our core mission to provide affordable, independent housing is paired with educational opportunities to empower our residents to progress toward their personal life goals in a safe, supportive environment.  We know well that learning can play a powerful role in building or rebuilding a life.

Our residents have experienced homelessness, substance abuse, physical  disability, persistent mental illness, learning disabilities, inadequate job skills/education, domestic violence/sexual abuse, or any combination of these.  Over the past year our small staff, aided to no small extent by more than 100 committed, generous, and skilled volunteers, has provided 1:1 personal and job counseling; workshops on life skills, wellness, and financial literacy; college and career counseling; community gardening; computer instruction; youth pro-grams (including summer camp, Homework Club, Reading Club, and Awesome Kids Club); parenting support and education; and many social and recreational activities.  We are truly proud of our staff and volunteers who are making such a lasting impact with our residents of all ages.

As we evolve as an organization, we continue to look at how we present the services and support offered that truly shows Bethany Hill as a place of hope,  a place of learning, and a place of growth.

We are grateful to the many donors and in-kind contributors who enable our programs to be as successful and innovative as they are.  This Annual Report is a heartfelt tribute and thank you to the individuals, families, companies, charita-ble foundations, and other organizations that help propel Bethany Hill forward.

We received in-kind support and expertise from over 100 wonderful individuals volunteering with academic tutoring and job coaching, personal financial management, donations and support during the holidays, homework mentoring, fitness instruction, office work, gardening instruction and assistance and in countless other ways.

Artist Bren Bataclan updated our children’s room with a mural incorporating important aspects of life on the hill.

EMERGING LEADERS

We honor 8 young residents who are emerging leaders within our community. The roles and respon-sibilities they have assumed range from writing for the Pulse, being a Reading Club director, to leading outdoor activities.

The success of the Bethany Hill model is our dual focus on work skills as well as foundational and life skills. We require involvement in education and/or training as a condition of residency. Our small staff and large corps of volunteers offer meaningful in-house programs and support to enable residents to meet the requirement and achieve their goals.
