Bestobell Oilfield Products is keen to offer itsdesign, development and qualification serviceto the oil and gas market.
Based on its extensive experience in providingadvanced sealing solutions for extremeenvironments, Bestobell is able to draw on itsconsiderable data base of applicationknowledge and material approvals to satisfythe stringent requirements in this highlyspecialised field.
We specialise in protecting people and plantfrom the dangers resulting from the spreadfire, concentrations of toxic vapours and otherhazards, but are equally capable of satisfyingmore basic non hazardous sealingrequirements.
So whether you require a conventional pipepenetration seal or a bespoke connector orflexible walkway structure we are confident thatwe can provide the solution that you require.
Pipe penetration seals
Bestobell Fireflex and Jetfire seals haveachieved an international reputation forversatility of application, performance underfire-rated condition and the highest quality.
Flexible and easy to fit
A fundamental characteristic of Fireflex sealsis their inherent flexibility. This allowsmovements within specified limits, temperature extremes, mechanical abuse andsevere operating conditions. They are alsoeasy to fit, whether to existing structures ornew installations. Jetfire seals offer a similar capability, but dueto their increased fire rating and hencemodified construction the stiffness of the sealis somewhat increased.
In a range of high-performance materials
Fireflex and Jetfire seals are fabricated fromnon-combustible and high temperature-resistant materials including woven ceramicand glass textiles, ceramic felts, metallic foilsand wire mesh materials. Outer coversurfaces are fire-check proofed to protectagainst the effects of sea water, ozone, methane and hydrocarbon fuels. Other typesof coating and impregnations are alsoavailable.
Insulated
To meet a specific fire rating, seal systemsmust have additional insulation. Typically, forClass A and H rated pipe penetrations andwhere BS 476 Part 20 insulation criteria mustbe met, our insulation covers the seal-retaining clips and extends along the pipe fora prescribed length.
Vapour tight
When you need absolute vapour tightness, werecommend that the external surface andseal contact points are coated with flameretardant membrane system paint (Chartex)after installation and before applying anyadditional installation.
Advanced sealing
This information will help determine the sealsystem needed for various fire ratings. However, the insulation and fire protectiondetailed on steelwork, decks and bulkheadsare given only as a guide and will varyaccording to legislation and specificapplication requirements.
Insulation for the seal clip area on pipe andsleeve is required for A60, H60 and H120-rated areas only. Forming part of theinstallation, the insulation slows down heattransfer along the pipe and stops hot spotsfrom forming on the clips. We recommendany approved fire insulation for this use to be25mm thick with a density of 128 kg/m2 iffibrous in type. A cementatious alternativecan also be used.
For the single seal system, insulation mustbe packed between the pipe and its sleeve. We recommend the use of loose ceramic fibrepacked to a density of around 128 kg/m2.
For offshore oil and marine use, Fireflex sealsystems have been independently fire-testedin single and double seal systemarrangements to hydrocarbon temperatures(1150˚C) for one and two hours. This meetsthe criteria of BS476 Part 20 and thesesystems have been certified by LloydsRegister. Fireflex has also been independentlytested and certified up to blast over pressureof 1.25 bar.g.
Correct positioning of the seal in line withpipe design movements will allow axialmovements up to 25mm in each direction.Freedom of movements in the lateral, offsetand angular planes can also be obtainedwithin the limitations of the penetrationsleeves. We recommend double clipping onsleeve diameters of 350mm and over.

The BFT 1500 series of wrap type seal is themost commonly supplied for use on pre-installed pipework.
A prepared overlap joint enables the seal tobe fitted easily using a special adhesive andthe stainless steel worm drive clips suppliedwithin the prepacked seal kit.
A penetration sleeve projecting on both sidesof the firewall and floor must be provided forinstallation and an adequate air gap betweenthe seals (please see page 6 forrecommended sleeve dimensions).
Careful positioning of the seal on the pipeenables axial movements up to 25mm in eachdirection.
Freedom of movement in lateral offset andangular planes can be obtained within thelimitations of the penetration sleeves, butlength of the seal needs to be compressed toreflect this movement so as not to strain thematerial. The table on page 6 gives the ordering suffixcoded dimensions to BS1600 or AS836.10.
Length of seal varies according to size. In general, where the pipe size is up to 4", the length is 6.0". Where a pipe size is 5"-10", the length is 8.0". For 12" and over, the pipe length is 10.0".
However, we work with any pipe and sleevespecified as nominal bore sizes or outsidediameters in imperial or metric dimensions.

JetFire JF2500Seal
Jetfire 2500 seals are Lloyds Registerclassified seals which provides jet fireresistance for up to 60 minutes (J60) asdefined in OTI 95634 and are bulkhead anddeck blast rated to 2.5 bar.g.
We recommend the use of CHARTEK 7 asshown in the installation diagram opposite. This slows down heat transfer along the pipeand prevents hot spots forming on the clips.Correct positioning of the seal in line with thepipe’s design will allow axial movements upto 25mm in each direction. Freedom oflateral, offset and angular planes can beobtained within the limitations of thepenetration sleeve. Double clipping isrecommended on sleeve diameters of 350mmand above.
Blast overpressure 2.5 bar gHydrocarbon fire rating Up to H120Jet fire resistance Up to J60
To accommodate space limitations and allowgreater movements while maintaining fireand vapour sealing capabilities, we fabricatea number of customised seals.
Bellows type seals allow greater axial andlateral movements than the conical type.
Conical type seals with steel stiffeners and aPTFE strip at the pipe end enable a slidingmovement.
Certification
Fireflex flexible fire seal systems have beencertified by Lloyds Register for use on Class Aand H rated installations.
Installations with test programmes have beensuccessfully conducted to the time andtemperature conditions of the hydrocarbonfire curve to BS 476 part 20 and SOLAS.

Using a ‘U’ clamp for steel or pre-fabricatedbulkheads allows seals to be fitted oninstallations already in operation where ‘hotwork’ is forbidden and bulkheads are load-bearing.
Through-bolts and retaining plates can beused on steel bulkheads where drilling isallowed.
Self-tapping screws are normally used onlightweight A0 and A60 rated firewalls. Thescrews penetrate only on the surface panel ofthe firewall.
Mounting Fireflex on steel bulkheads
Because of the wide range of workingconditions likely to be encountered, Bestobellhas developed a comprehensive range ofshapes and constructions to maintainresilience under varying loads. The shape of the seal is dependent on theattachment area and weight of the door orcover. 30% compression is normally neededto form a reliable seal. For 100% vapourtightness, we recommend a coating withpolymeric fire-retardant paint. Typicalconstructions have stainless steel mesh corefor areas on doors and covers which are infrequent use.
Ceramic fibre cores can be used for fire-ratedareas on doors and covers which are usedonce or twice a year.
Silicone tube and sponge cores for vapourareas should be used on doors and covers infrequent use.
These examples show a lightweight panelcover with a very small closed aperturebetween cover and structure. A suitable fireseal is derived from the integration ofstainless steel mesh inside a ceramic clothcovering, impregnated with neoprene rubber.
Using materials similar to those alreadydescribed, this illustration shows a Bestobellseal designed for sealing between deckplates on a heli-deck. Because it is a statictype, no resilience is needed.

Assembled positions
These seals, supplied as lengths, areprimarily for module-to-deck and module-to-module sealing. For A60 and H60installations, a double seal with insulating airgap is needed. For H120 situations, insulationis needed between the inner and outer seals. For A0 and H0 applications, a single seal isadequate. Typical installation requires a steelangle toe-welded to bulkhead and a steelchannel welded to deck. The spacer betweenseals comprises a square section steel tube.
We can make special seals for module anddeck junctions. This typical ‘T’ section sealbonds all overlaps together to maintain a fireand vapour-tight joint. Other configurationscan be manufactured to specificrequirements.
We can pre-fabricate corner sections. ThisA60 double seal joins an A0 single seal on thecorner. The ends of each seal are preparedfor bonding to the adjacent piece.
