NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS
Life is full of joy just because of the friends we have made and the thingsin common we share. We want to live one, not because of ourselves, but because ofthe people who care. It’s giving and doing for somebody else, that all life’s splendordepends. And the joy of the world when you have summed it all up, is found in themaking of friends.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

A Message from the 2014 Presidentof the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento
and the2014 Feast President
It is with the pleasure and pride that I welcome you to the 100th Celebration of Feast of the Blessed Sacrament. From wherever you call home: New Bedford, other communities of Massachusetts and New England; or nearly every state in this great country; or from Canada, Por-tugal, and the entire world; we hope you take back with you wonderful memories of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration!
It is my honor to serve as President of the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, the sup-porting organization of the Feast and, this special anniversary year, as President of the actual Feast Committee. Over 280 Festeiros from our region and as far away as Florida to the south, California
to the west and even South Africa have worked together for over a year in preparation. It is my pleasure to work along side these gentlemen and their families—I appreciate the opportunity more than I can express.
I know each of us on the 2014 committee remember deep in our hearts our parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends who have come before us…even more than ever at this 100th year.
My association with the Feast began before my first year as a Festeiro in 1988. It started with my Grandfather Francisco Luis Per-reira who served in 1942, continuing with my Father Antonio Abreu who served in 1950. This is a heritage that has been part of my entire life and became even more important to me when I married Olga Figueira, whose father Francisco, inspired an even deeper commitment to our shared culture. I know for Olga and I this is a very special time in our lives.
We thank our many friends, our local and regional government and business community, as well as the hundreds of volunteers, who every year give their time and effort to bring this Feast to all of you. To our families who work beside us, there are no words that express our love and appreciation.
All of us are proud of our century-long history of financial contributions, through your help, to hundreds of local, statewide, national and international charities. Our scholarship donations to deserving students of all nationalities and backgrounds stands now at over $600,000.00. We also take pride in the Museum of Madeiran Heritage and the Groupo Folclorico Madeirense both endeavoring to share our cultural traditions with the greater community and future generations.
Enjoy the music, the food, and the time with your families and friends over these four days. Thank you for being with us as we continue to honor our founding fathers, our Madeiran heritage and our good fortune to now live in this wonderful country.
We promise our commitment to our mission will continue into the next 100 years!

Message of the Consul of Portugal in New Bedford, Pedro Carneiro, on the occasion of the 100th celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Anniversary
It is with a combination of emotion, respect and pride that I will participate this year for the first time in the famous Feast of the Blessed Sacrament. And it couldn’t be more auspicious to do so than by celebrating the 100th celebration
of such great event, in which we pay homage to an extraordinary and ancient tradition.
The Feast is a religious and a popular demonstration that involves and attracts many people. It is a celebration that gathers the local Luso-American community,
people from Madeira, Azores and the Mainland. But is also attracts – and this is an element I would like to point out – a very significant American public. The Feast of the
Blessed Sacrament is thus a shared celebration of great quality and reputation – with the excellence of what we have best – where the image of our community, of Madeira and of our country is promoted as vivacious, dynamic and strong in its identity and in its cultural value.
A very special word to all the committee members, to the Club Madeirense of the Blessed Sacrament, to the volunteers, to the official entities and to the organizations that take part in the Feast: without them it wouldn’t be possible to put together such a family ori-ented and diverse program, where the holy coexists with the profane, and that includes
entertainment, gastronomy, parades, sports and cultural activities. In short, a rich pro-gram resulting in promoting the Madeiran heritage and culture and that much contributes to the prestige of Portugal in this region.
Cheers to the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament and let it celebrate yet another 100 years!!!

Bailinho da MadeiraBY STEPHEN L. CABRAL, PH.D.
The sound and spirit of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament pulsate to the music of the traditional bailinho performed by the Grupo Folclorico Madeirense. These dancers and musicians have performed onstage, in the streets and at the feast grounds since 1979. Dulce Langhan organized the group for her uncle, Sylvester Sylvia, who was president of the 1979 committee. George Bertoldo, his vice-president became the first musical director.
The group’s musical repertoire includes songs that are five centuries old. The Madeiran singing duels called, cantigas ao desafio and the bailinho, the unofficial national anthem of Madeira, are crowd favorites. The folk dancers perform nightly on the main stage of Madeira Field and prominently march in the ritual processions and parade.
The Madeiran Folklore Group became an instant success when they appeared at Madeira Field. Their performances have been carried by American and Portuguese television and newspapers. They have made countless, public appearances in Portuguese communities and folkloric festivals throughout the United States, Canada and Madeira. These tours are recorded in the ribbons and awards hanging from their flag standards.
The Madeiran folklore group wears the traditional outfits from the village of Camacha. The women wear brocaded, red vests over white blouses. Their rainbow, wool striped skirts twirl and spin to the music. Their tan botas de chá complete the ensemble. Their male partners wear simple white, linen pants and shirts with matching boots and blue berets.
The notoriety of the current troupe stems from the musical roots and dancing customs of their ancestors. Tour the Museum of Madeiran Heritage and study the photos of the first folkloric groups compiled by Madeiran artist and museum founder, Joseph Souza. The earliest photo of the Romaria da Camacha dates back to 1931. The Baptiste family organized the troupe and made many of the musical instruments and costumes by hand.
The Folkloric Group of Santa Cruz emerged during the summer of 1932. The growth and popularity of Madeiran folklore can be seen in the proud faces of the musicians and dancers. Their group recruited more than thirty performers.
The Romaria da Camacaha performed with the Folkloric Group of Santa Cruz at the Dia Madeirense Pic-Nic at Perry’s Gove at the junction of Hathaway and State Roads in July of 1934. Both groups performed at a festival commemorating the Festas of Ponta Delgada on the island of Madeira at the Sharp Street grounds during the Labor Day Weekend later that summer. These events were frequently covered and reported in the Diaro das Noticias published in New Bedford.
Madeiran folkloric music provided the beat and inspiration behind the Ramboia a Pe De New Bedford ao Loreto in Norton. Twenty-eight Madeirans undertook the 31 mile pilgrimage to the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto during the Labor Day weekend of 1948. This group decided to resurrect an old Madeiran feast custom. Extended families and friends often walked and sang along the routes to festas at neighboring villages in the island. Thirty mile hikes along mountain trails and narrow unpaved roads were not unusual. Only eight of the original Madeiran-Americans completed the walk to Loreto.
The Grupo Saudades da Madeira attracted a new generation of American-born descendants in 1950. They donned the traditional costumes, learned the songs and performed the bailinho at the festa. They were followed by the Grupo Recordacoes da Madeira in 1956.
Madeiran folklore waned in the 1960’s and reemerged in the 1970’s. Michael R. Canasta is the current group director and a dancer. He traces his Madeiran ancestry to Santa Cruz and Gaula. Traditional folkloric music and dancing have become his passion. Mr. Canasta concluded:
“Our folkloric group is the heart and soul of this festa. We are proud to wear this costume and take the stage on behalf of our club, our community and our ancestors. When we dance, we keep themusic and culture alive.”
