Races are coming back though it is still mostly smaller events. The medium sized events are at about one third normal. Note there were 15 times as many major events last winter. Also note that this winter-spring is really two seasons. Last spring was basically zip so compare 2019 winter spring numbers to this year.

To help explain the table below take for example the 65-69 women’s division. Thirty-four runners (Total of Ranked Women) among themselves combined to race 180 times (Women Ranked Races of qualifiers). One Hundred and thirty-seven-runners (Total Women’s qualifying racers) means that 43 (180-137) women ran just one race at a ranked time and did not qualify.

With so many smaller events it not surprising that 34 races met the gold standard of competition with 20% or more ranked runners and an amazing 134 made the silver standard of 10% ranked runners. Only five races were major events, 500 of more runners. There were 156 5Ks and 61 10Ks. The half marathon happened just 34 times and the full marathon a mere dozen. No other distance recorded as many as ten events. Cathy Moore, 47, was the oldest of fourteen runners not from the open division (20-34) to qualify for the women’s Elite Division that decreased to 32 qualifiers. Ten runners were outright winners not (20-34). Cristina Burbach, 46, was the eldest Ten male runners made it into the Elite Division from another division, the oldest being David Angell, 44. Three runners were outright winners not (20-34). David Angell, 44, was the eldest. The men’s Elite Division decreased to 22 qualifiers. For the women, a masters runner was the overall winner 40 times; for the men, 30 times. For the women, Janice Uthe, 64, was the oldest outright winner. For the men, Allen Vaughan, 71, was the oldest outright winner. We are posting in blue all the runners with National Class times (80%) of the top-rated time for each division based on their best time in 10K equivalence. The time standards are based on the youngest in each division except for the 19 and

younger, where it becomes the eldest time, which is for the strongest time. In the past, the division champions received their age grading based on their 10K equivalent. However, each race distance has a different age grading that does not always match up with the expected 10K equivalence. Also, we are now basing on their actual age as well as the actual distance they ran. Thus, it is possible for an older runner in the same division to have a better age graded event than the champion. There will be some runners who are up to the 80% level by being on the older side of the 5-year division that get missed. However, in this manner, everyone in blue will be at least 80%. In the “you got to play to win” category, i.e. (you only qualified in one race) an impressive additional 61 men and 28 women ran a National Class race. Among the qualifiers were, from the open division, (20) with 42 total for the men and from the open division (10) with 23 total for the women. Five runners made World Class status: 90% Age Grade: Julie Hayden, 61, is tops at 92.44%, Cindy Conant, 59, at 91.43%, and Susanna Sullivan, 30, at 90.80% are the women. For the men, it was the Colin Munsey, 55, at 91.09% and masters great David Angell, 44 at 90.44%. The top female qualifiers above 87% are Joey Hallock, 66, at 89.52%, Betty Brothers, 73, at 87.49%, Hannah Cocchiaro, 27, at 87.55%, Perry Shoemaker, 48, at 87.55%, Kendall Tata, 57, at 87.02%. 95 and older 01:42:57 95 and older 02:17:03 Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone is the fastest qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. (MRF) is for the Moreland Racing Factor. Races bolded are major races with either 500 finishers or more than twenty percent Ranked Runners. In the past, a runner beating another runner virtually ended a chance for the losing runner to prevail using the Moreland Racing Factor but we noted that time is of importance as well and runners do recover from a subpar event. Thus, we added to the accounting by giving runners a point for every second their best race beats their competitor’s best race. Runner still lose four or eight points (major race) as well as gain four or eight points (major race) depending on which end of the head-to-head they fall on. We now list the 10K equivalent of each runner’s fastest race next to their spot in the ranking list. Remember, the fastest time is not always the best race and each runner has at least two races to qualify. Now let’s see who made the top. Open Men Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic 5K 14:19, 10K = 29:51 – age grade = 90.69% The top three runners are the same top three from the teen division. For the second, a teen has won the open division as well. Our season’s champion Frank Csorba won it all at Brant Tolsma in 14:52 and though he improved at the bigger Dennis Craddock 5K to 14:33, he was the fourth-place finisher. Runner-up Kipruto Kogei won it all at the Liberty Twilight 5K in 14:36 beating third ranked Joe Spitzer (15:06) in the process. Both fell short of Csorba at the Dennis Craddock 5K with Spitzer returning the favor to best Kogei, 14:49 to 14:53.

Next up in fourth place Tyler Muse twice ran a race longer than the combined six 5Ks run by the three top ranked men. Muse won Salisbury Half Marathon in 1:08:35. Then he slowed imperceptivity the next month winning it all again at the Cambridge Crab Run Half Marathon in 1:08:39. Fifth ranked Harrison Toney was golden at his two events, Stratford Hills 10K in 31:40 and the Uncorked Half Marathon in 1:12:13. The next three runners are a tangled mess. Ninth ranked Roger Hopper is perhaps the most prolific runners with nineteen qualifiers, including nine overall wins. He never finished worse than third overall. He raced more than 155 miles from 5K to marathon with six other distances between them. He finished (15:30) behind seventh ranked Adam Otstot (15:17) and by a step thirteenth ranked John Vogel (15:29) at the Run for the D. O. G. 5K. He also lost five more times to Otstot. And though Otstot had a slightly faster time then Forest Braden, Braden takes sixth place by virtue of three overall wins, all against Otstot. At the Jamestown Swamp Run 5K, Hopper was third behind these two, leaving him in eighth place. Hopper had a massive record that included four long distance races ahead of tenth ranked Seth Kolosso. They finished one-two in three of them, all of which Hopper had faster times than either Otstot or Braden. Hopper was best at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 15M in 1:20:52. Kolosso was best at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 20M, finishing behind Hopper, 1:50:40 to 1:51:11. Ninth ranked Lukasz Olenginski was third at the Salisbury Half Marathon in 1:09:51 for a time right in the mix with these athletes. However, his second race at the Winter Hains Point 5K in 16:25 just made it as a qualifier by two seconds. Fifteenth ranked David Angell was second best of two males to get a 90% age grading with his excellent 15:35.4 at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic 5K. All but two of the twenty-two qualifiers made at least an 80% age grading. The smallest field of open runners (22) qualified for the division with ten coming from other divisions. We have noted the exact age graded times for all racers from other divisions. National Class times (80%) = 33:24 World Class status (90%) = 29:41

G. 5K in 15:29, ahead of four other ranked teens, including twelfth ranked Austin Alanis (16:51). But the firepower came of this division race came out of three big races in Lynchburg. The Brant Tolsma Invitational was total elite, followed three months later by the Liberty Twilight 5K with half its runners owning qualifying times. The third event in mid-April was the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic 5K that took down the D.O.G. as the most competitive event with 72 qualifying times out of the total field of 74. Our season’s champion Frank Csorba won it all at Brant Tolsma in 14:52 and though he improved at the bigger Dennis Craddock 5K to 14:33, he was the fourth-place finisher. Fifth ranked Cian Bell (15:47) was 15th place in the race, sixth ranked Colin Walsh (15:53) was 21st in the race, and ninth ranked Vincent Leo (16:11) was 32nd place at the race. Cutting in front of Leo, seventh ranked Etan Corrigan won it all at the TS Turkey Trot 10K in 33:41 and eight place Lucas Simmons won it all at the Joe & Sue Moore Memorial Scholarship 5K in 16:17 This is the division that dropped the least, falling only two qualifiers short of last year. The top six runners all reached National Class times (age grade 80% or better).

In his nine races, he was the overall winner six times and he also blitzed the fastest race, winning the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 15:17. He also owned four of the top five times. In his other three events, he was second overall every time. There’s the rub. Our division champion Forest Braden was there each and every time, winning all three head-to-head races. Braden was best winning over Otstot at the Virginia Fire Chiefs 5K, 15:21 to 15:28 as well as the Jamestown Swamp Run 5K, 15:41 to 15:49.

Third ranked Brian Flynn was the overall winner at the 8K Race to Benefit the Haven in in 25:29, for the fastest 8K of the division, ahead of fifth ranked Tripp Southerland (26:56). Flynn was also runner-up at the Blue Gray Half Marathon in 1:13:38, while Southerland displayed his best race at the competitive Sugar Hollow Frostbite 4M in 21:13. Fourth place Andrew Parkins was second overall at two quality 5Ks, the American Legion 5K in 15:50 and the Peaks of Otter 5K in 16:29. Just like both the 40-44 and 45-49 divisions, this one shrunk to eleven qualifiers. The top five runners all delivered National Class times (age grade 80% or better). That may be the fastest time that did not win the masters division. His second qualifier was a somewhat pedestrian 37:13 at the New Year's Day 10K in Fredericksburg, though he was second overall that morning. Our division champion showed us the next five best races, all 5Ks, after Corgliano. David Angell took on the elites at the most competitive race of the period, the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic 5K and scurried home in 15:35.4. Least that seem like a fast course, note that he two overall wins and three more sub-16-minute 5Ks, including the American Legion 5K in 15:40. The next fastest 5K belonged to fifth ranked Steve Moore who raced around the golf course in Westminster to finish second overall at the Celtic Canter 5K in 17:09. the D. O. G. 5K in 17:14 and the VRB Derby Day 5K in 17:13. Third ranked Steve Monnier won silver at the Winter Connect 10K in 34:10. When Monnier met Moore (29:24) at the Germantown 5M, Monnier prevailed in a place confirming 29:04. Riley edges Moore as five of his races were faster than Moore ran his five miler. Sixth ranked Khalid Kurtom was just offshore with his brilliant Cambridge Crab Run Half Marathon in 1:19:14. The division dropped to a third as many qualifiers matching the 45-49 with eleven. 45-49 Men Run for the D. O. G. 5K 16:20, 10K = 34:04 Year after year, the area surrounding Williamsburg, generally has the most competitive 5Ks in the region. This year’s blitz through the restored area was no exception with the Run for the D. O. G. 5K having the second most ranked runner of any event. Mark Tomkins becomes the third division champion to earn his spot at this race (Robert Whitaker 60-64 and Stephen Chantry 65-69). His fifth overall 16:20 is an open class qualifier. That event elevated him past runner-up Lindsey Lee (17:01) and fifth place Toby Worm (17:48). Tompkins was also third overall at the VRB Derby Day 5K in 16:55. Lee added a win at the Virginia Fire Chiefs 5K in 17:42. Third ranked Christopher Shaw placed third overall with a marvelous Riley's Rumble Half Marathon in 1:18:35 at rolling Black Hill Park. His second event was a tough cross country 5K that yielded very few ranked times. Fourth ranked Martin Angulo wowed with the next fastest half, racing the Cambridge Crab Run

Half Marathon with a fine 1:21:13. That was ahead of Worm’s Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 1:21:42. Sixth ranked Thomas Hicks was right in the mix with his strong Resolution Run 5K in 17:42 as well as his five wins. Worm captured six wins that included their only match-up where Worm prevailed at the Yorktown Battlefield 10M, 1:02:37 to 1:04:09 This division is often one of the smallest. After a huge gain in 2020 to thirty-seven runners, it settled back down considerably. The top three runners all produced National Class times (age grade 80% or better). 50-54 Men Elizabeth River Run 10K 35:22 – age grade = 85.67% The top three were nearly a three-way tie. Third ranked Matt Boyd cranked out the fastest half, racing the Blue Gray Half Marathon in 1:20:05. However, our champion, Alexander Hetherington was a mere one second behind and was the overall winner at the Holiday Half Marathon run that same that first Sunday in December. What made the decision easy was that the two met at the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail Half Marathon in February and third overall Hetherington prevailed, 1:27:07 to 1:29:40. Runner-up Scott Harmon posted the division’s best time, taking down former champion and fourth ranked Antonio Eppolito at the DCRRC Fort Hunt 10K, 37:10 to 37:54. Last winter, Eppolito had prevailed 37:31 to 37:45. Harmon helped his case with the fastest 5K, racing the Mason Neck 5K in 18:17. Eppolito stayed right in the title chasing on the mostly cross country DCRRC Burke Lake 12K in 45:31. 2020 when he averaged more than 36 miles a race, in 2021 his three events are averaging nearly 38 miles each. His fine Strider BQ Marathon Invitational in 2:59:27 earns him fifth in the division. Note that every race distance is age graded differently and races longer than a half marathon usually have lower ratings. Indeed, back at the start of the season, seventh ranked Peter Pommerenk ran an inspired 3:00:58 at the Dismal Swamp Marathon. Between the two, sixth ranked Tom Yinger joined the division with the second fastest 5K, the Celtic Canter in 18:35. In the first race of the summer, Yinger outkicked Steve Kartalia, 55, at the Owl Track 2-mile, 11:29 to 11:39. As a younger master, Kartalia set the still standing masters record in 10:11. Craig Chasse earns eight place with a fine endeavor at the Cranberry Crawl 5K in 18:44. Slightly more than half (17) of the thirty-two runners from last year qualified for the division. The top two runners all provided National Class times (age grade 80% or better). National Class times (80%) = 37:34 World Class status (90%) = 33:23

Third ranked Steven Kast won all twelve of his 5Ks. His best time was at the Resolution Run 5K in 18:10 to start the yea. On March 20 he ran the Spring Fever 5K in 19:10 for an overall win. That same morning, Colin Munsey ran an 18:0129 at the Backpack 5K. At that point, Pete Wergin had already run the DCRRC Fort Hunt 10K in 37:08. Later he would race then Mason Neck 5K in 17:27 to prevail over Kast. Then in mid-May Munsey pulled away from both of them with his second of two overall wins at the Hustle for the Homeless 5K in 16:50. That earned him the highest men’s age grading for the entire season and the title. Wergin is the runner-up with Kast settling for third place. Fourth ranked Edward Dickenson was commanding with four overall wins while racing five different distances. His best race was the Frozen Toe 10K in 38:17. Peter Pommerenk was at the Strider BQ Marathon Invitational with a healthy 3:07:25 but he earned fifth place at the Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 1:26:07. Sixth ranked RJ Scott supplied his best of four golds at the Johnny Casa 5K in 18:59. The next five racers were ultra-close. Former champion Hernan Garbini gets the lean with two the top five times among these guys to take seventh. He was best at the 8K Race to Benefit the Haven in 32:00. Jon Leiding matched David Phipps 19:29 at the College Park Park Run #182 exactly with his Run for the D. O. G. 5K. Leiding is granted eighth as he also added ten age group wins. Ninth place Paul Pelletier pushes Phipps back to tenth by defeating eleventh ranked Greg Dawson at the Yorktown Battlefield 10M, 1:07:27 to 1:07:47. Whitaker, who won the division with nine victories in twelve events was tops at the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 18:45. That time bested runner-up Rick Samaha (19:05) and Chantry by one second. Though they come from two divisions, Chantry raced against Whitaker nine times. Whitaker took the lead 6-3. In all nine events Chantry took a mere 43 seconds longer to finish all the races combined. Both won a race by a mere second. Add Samaha to the mix and they had a combined seven races. Now the record is Whitaker vs Chantry 4-3, Whitaker vs Samaha 4-3, Chantry vs Samaha 4-3. Third ranked Pete Gibson was the bridge spending time in both divisions. He was best at the Resolution Run 5K in 19:25. Then he finished third overall at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 6M in 39:17. Fourth ranked Timothy Coady is making a name for himself with eight victories. He ran the United Way 5K on the Runway in 20:14. On the final day of the season, he completed his best event, the Memorial Day 10K in 41:59. Fifth place Preston Evans was there as well a tardy sixty seconds back. Mark Drosky was second overall at the cult Bishop Events Tuesday Night 5K #2 in 20:47 and earns sixth place. Terry Mclaughlin lives for the middle distance, racing multiple events at twice weekly track meets. Out in the real world he ran a credible second overall at the EOD Warrior 7K in 30:21 to take seventh place. 65-69 Men Run for the D. O. G. 5K 18:46, 10K = 39:09 The chant for Chantry (Stephen) is still loud and clear. He produced the nine fastest qualifiers. Even his other two outliers were victories as well. He ran two 5Ks fast enough to gain him access to a division some twenty years younger. His Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 18:46 bested fourth ranked Richard Grant (21:08), fifth ranked Jim Duffy (21:13), as well as sixth ranked Tom Clark (21:24). That time is now listed as the Virginia age group record. (Note record times are cherry-picked and have left out a national record time run by Tom McCormack at the Galax Days 5K 10/19/19 in 17:55.) Still Chantry at 66, is improving his times from last year. At his second fastest 10K, the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 42:03, he again set down Grant (43:35) and Duffy (45:09).

Away from the Tidewater, we find Eugene Myers who is unbeatable, racing mainly 5Ks and finishing eight for eight in wins. This runner-up was best at the A Run to the Taproom 5K in 20:25. To put away third place former champion Pete Gibson and his top master at the Stratford Hills 10K in 42:38, Myers ran the Get Pumped for Pets 15K in 1:06:31. Gibson second qualifier was a second overall at the Tacky Sweater 5K in 21:16. Amazingly, that is the sixth fastest 5K not run by Chantry who completed eight 5Ks faster than that. The top five runners all produced National Class times (age grade 80% or better) with Chantry just short of the 90% World Class standard and the third highest age grading of all the men. Seventh ranked Jim Thornton ran the Sentara Sleighbell 5K in 21:56, followed by Vic Barthelemy who won at the Blue Gray Half Marathon in 1:42:09 for the second fastest half. Right after him in ninth place Bob Draim ran the PVTC Easter Classic 5K in 22:31. The division doubled in 2020 with fifty-three qualifiers and then cut in half this year to twenty-seven. Three weeks later, he set the 5K standard that would last through most of June with his division winning PVTC Easter Classic 5K in 22:37. Racing fool Dale Abrahamson owned 10 of the next 11 best events. He won 13 times in all. As runner-up, his best event was the Run for the Heart 10M in 1:19:40. At the star-studded Run for the D. O. Third ranked Bill Hart was best at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 12M in 50:06. He really secures his spot at the Run for the Heart 10M in 1:25:16 ahead of DiCarlo’s 1:28:44. Fifth ranked Charles Beverage makes his best appearance at the Carytown 10K in 50:58. He added a solid Stratford Hills 10K in 51:55. Seventh ranked Allen Vaughan, 71, ran the Spring Memorial 10K in 58:34 just for show. He really is into the half marathon. He ran four of them with his fastest being the Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 1:55:36. But his most memorable was an overall win at the TRR Low Key Half Marathon 1:57:29. He had by far the fastest 5K at the Resolution Run in 29:52. He was also sparkling at the Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 2:19:06. Lowell Skelton moved into the runner-up spot with the divison’s second fastest 5K, the Johnny Casa in 31:48. Third ranked Preston Fitzgerald finished behind Lougee at two of the Tidewater Striders Tune-ups. His best race was the 6 miler in 1:12:55. The prolific John Munday won four of his six events. His Yorktown Freedom 8K in 59:35 was the ticket to a fourth-place ranking. With conditions this year, the elder divisions are the slowest to reboot. The division had fewer than a third as many qualifiers. A total of eleven other runners, fewer than a sixth as many as last year, earned at least one qualifying event. Open Women Up Dawg 10M 51:23, 10K = 30:23 – age grade 97.37% The season began with Keira D’Amato racing the Updawg 10M in Washington, DC. The race was billed as an official record attempt, with the runners chasing the women-only American 10-mile record. Molly Huddle owns the mixed American record, which she set at the Houston Half-Marathon in 2018 when she ran a 50:52 (on route to the national half-marathon record of 1:07:25). Indeed, this would be a three-fold attempt as there is the 51:47 run by Cathy O'Brien in August 1989 at the Bobby Crim 10M. It was the world record for two years. Some organizations such as ARRS (Association of Road Racing Statisticians) do not recognize any distance part of a longer event. Janet Bawcom ran 52:12 at the 2014 Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run which was a women’s only event. D’Amato ran an astonishing 51:23 to best two of the three records. To put in context, her time would have made her the overall…in both the men and women’s division for this season. However, she rested on her laurels, forgoing another qualifier. In addition, she will be gearing up for a special fall addition of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom to be run this fall. This left Susanna Sullivan the consensus winner of the open division with her fourth-place finish at the Updawg 10M in 54:22. Sullivan was the overall winner in her other three events. Runner-up Ann Mazur with seven overall wins met Sullivan (16:22) at the Run for the D. O. G. 5K where she performed her best, finishing third in 17:10. At Sullivan’s fastest half, the Sentara Colonial Half Marathon (1:17:56), Mazur was again third overall. Her time was 1:23:45. In a close battle for third place, Natalie Patterson won the Salisbury Marathon in 2:51:51 while fourth ranked Kerri Toney won it all at the Uncorked Half Marathon in1:21:39. Fifth ranked Norbo Carter’s 8K Race to Benefit the Haven in December with 29:35 bested all the women save for Mazur (29:22). In February Carter got

payback with a narrow victory over Mazur at the Sugar Hollow Frostbite 4M, 23:29 to 23:31. Seventh ranked Chloe Reynolds collected the next fastest time, winning the Memorial Day 10K in 37:39. Although she won her other event, it was in a much slower time. Sixth place Carolyn Yang won three of her seven events. She also finished second overall at the Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 1:24:08 for her second fastest half. Next up in the eighth position Jennifer Paul won it all at the New Day New Year 5K in 18:18. Especially close, Maggie Hudson won it all at the Liberty Twilight 5K in 18:19 to take the next spot. Eleventh ranked Stephanie Rice produced her finest overall win just ahead of runner-up Cathy Moore at the Strider BQ Marathon Invitational, 2:59:35 to 3:00:11. Just ahead of Rice in tenth place, Bethany Spector bested Rice at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, 38:51 to 39:12, taking the second and third spots on the podium behind Mazur’s 37:45. Spector had her best race as fourth overall at the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 18:27 one spot ahead of fifteenth ranked Maria Spady (18:44). None of twelfth ranked Jennifer Moran’s victories was faster than her November Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 1:25:11, ahead of Hudson’s runner-up 1:27:20. It was not quite enough to overcome Hudson’s speedy 5K. Fourteenth ranked Michelle Miller rode home to victory at the rolling hills Riley's Rumble Half Marathon in 1:27:30 which to our mind is more impressive than her win at the pancake flat College Park Park Run in 18:40. 19 & Younger Women Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic 5K 17:00, 10K = 35:28 – age grade 86.86% Grace Chesley was an easy choice for the title as she boasted the two fastest events, the only times with a sub-40:00 10K equivalent. She won the Racing around the Lake Half Marathon out right in 1:27:46. Runner-up Katie Borland was next 1:36:36. Two weeks later Chesley ran a faster Potomac River Run Half Marathon in 1:27:13. Borland showed a preference for the 5K holding off third ranked Emma Ahrens at the Valor 5K, 19:36 to 19:43. Fourth ranked Camilia McKinstry won it all at SYA Turkey Trot 5K in 29:52. The Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic 5K produced a slew of elite times but for many of the racers it was their only event. Hannah Hale finished a second event so even though she was 11th in the event her 20:11 earns her fifth place. Sixth ranked Sorenna Jean is predominately a 5K runner with a sterling 20:27 at the Run for Team 5K. Still, when she tried out the 10M, she ran the division’s fastest at the Yorktown Battlefield 10M in 1:11:38. Seventh place is the honor for Priscilla Keeler who was the overall winner at the Backpack Run 5K 20:36. Twelfth ranked Cannon Jean had by far the most wins (8). She finished behind her sister twice but at the Elizabeth River 10K – perhaps they ran together – Cannon won over Soreena 45:28 to 45:29.

35-39 Women Up Dawg 10M 51:23, 10K = 30:23 – age grade 97.37% Keira D’Amato ran only one event. She won the event that crowned this season’s open champion, Susanna Sullivan. Sullivan’s excellent effort was a distance fourth overall. At a special invitational 10 Mile, D’Amato was gunning for the American record. In the end, she broke the record for women’s only in a wonderous 51:23. That is the 17th fastest 10M ever for the entire world. The only American to ever run faster was Molly Huddle who hit 50:52 at the ten-mile mark of the Houston Half Marathon (not women only) to set the North America mark for the 10M and the 20K. D'Amato, who at 36, seems to be getting faster by leaps and bounds was easily the fastest submaster. To put in perspective, D’Amato fantastic race was the third best race of all of the racers in the region, male and female. Only two track 5Ks edged her race. A second qualifier by her would have earned her the open crown for the region, including not just women but for the men as well.

From the 5K to the half marathon with three distances in between, Ann Mazur was the runner to beat. All in all, she won overall seven times, only once in her eleven events was she out of the top three overall. Her best race was the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 17:10 for third overall. Overall champion Susanna Sullivan won that event in 16:22 as the only runner standing in Mazur’s way to that title as well. Mazur owned the top eight times for the division that included the fastest division 5K, 4M (the Sugar Hollow Frostbite in 23:31), 8K (the Race to Benefit the Haven in 29:22), and 10K (the Yorktown Victory 10K in 37:38) for the entire year. After that, runner-up Carolyn Yang provided four of next five best events. Yang possessed two overall wins and two second overall placements. Her best of three Ed Barron Holiday wins was the Cranberry Crawl 5K in 18:20. Still, she did her best work at the half marathon, racing her fastest at the Salisbury Half Marathon in1:23:55. Third ranked Stephanie Rice likes the long distance winning a 20M and the Strider BQ Marathon Invitational (2:59:35) overall. Her third best race was a third overall triumph over fifth ranked Mollie Sweet at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, 39:12 to 39:51. Fourth ranked Julia Roman-Duval, former champion, is just starting to get back to racing. She won her first race in, for her, a pedestrian 20:38. Later she would win the Germantown 5M in a much better 30:53. This year’s course moved off the normally fast course to rolling hills of Black Hill Park. Sixth ranked Renee Merchant, a former overall champion, still has the goods with an open class Tidewater Striders Tune-up 10M victory in 1:06:33. Amanda Hicks ran the swift New Day New Year 5K in 19:23 for second overall and seventh place in the division Twenty-three runners qualified for the division. 40-44 Women Dismal Swamp Half Marathon 1:25:11, 10K = 38:30 Jenny Moran won overall in five of her races so it is no surprise that she qualifies for the open division as well. She earns the title from the beginning, winning the Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 1:25:11. Her fastest of two overall wins at 10 mile is the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 10M in 1:05:48. Runner-up Michelle Miller also was an overall winner. In fact, she was tops in all four of her events. Two were cross country, including a pouring rain mud fest. On dry land and rolling hills, she navigated the Riley's Rumble Half Marathon in 1:27:48, ahead on fifth ranked Jana Fridrichova (1:30:03) who was second overall. On the fastest Park Run course in College Park, Miller dominated the field in a 18:40 5K. Fourth ranked Tressa Briendel raced the Frostbite 12K in 48:28 to an overall victory. Memorial week end Sunday she ran the Stratford Hills 10K in 40:17, finishing in second overall. Sophie Lambert was the third racer to top the National Class standard (age grade 80% or better). The day before she had been top master at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 40:09. Even more impressive, was her third overall at the Strider BQ Marathon Invitational in 3:07:42. Elizabeth Clor does a lot of racing with Potomac River Running but they did not start back until May, so Clor took her shoes further south to race the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 10M in a very nice 1:07:49 to collect sixth place. Seventh place Mary Verasin ran a fine Blue Gray Half Marathon in 1:30:58 to pass eighth place Sherry Stick by a click. Stick ran one of this year’s largest 5Ks so far, the Celtic Canter 5K in 19:45 for second overall. Verasin registered the next fastest time as second overall at the Winter Hains Point 10K in 41:20. Meanwhile, many time former division champion (Stick) added an overall win at the Sykesville Shiver Shuffle 5K in 20:40. Twenty runners, slightly more than a half of last year qualified for the division.

She took charge on the eastern shore a week after Moore’s marathon to win at the Salisbury Half Marathon in 1:27:52. She added four top three overall finishes, including two overall wins. Her second-best race was also an open class time, the PVTC Christmas Caper 10K in 41:01. Julie Hicks was a winning machine owning nine of the next ten best times. She was best at the Resolution Run 5K in 20:15. Fourth place Tisha Wheeler was the overall winner at the reopening of the area’s Park Runs. Her time at the Fletcher's Cove Park Run 5K #214 was 21:51. She earned her spot in her fastest of two halves, the EOD Warrior Half Marathon in 1:37:21. Fifth place was Aimee Stafford who won the Ringing in Hope 10K in 45:57.

Runner-up Debbie Goodpasture raced the Uncorked 5K in 21:17, also second overall to start May. That same morning, sixth ranked Kimberly Speed won the Uncorked Half Marathon in 1:45:07. Earlier Goodpasture had bested fifth ranked Jane Gilbride at the iconic Run for the D. O. G. 5K, 21:31 to 22:39. While Goodpasture dominated the shorter events, third place Jane Heinrichs was golden going long. She was second master at the Strider BQ Marathon Invitational in 3:33:09. She owned the two fastest halves, including the EOD Warrior Half Marathon in 1:43:34. With eight triumphs, Kirsten Kelly accumulatede twice as many wins as any other racer in the division. She earned gold at the Resolution Run 5K in 22:45 Seventh ranked Julie Vaughan ran a fine Tidewater Striders Tune-up 12M in 1:36:25. But look out ladies because now that Perry Shoemaker is fifty, there will be a new sheriff in town as she crushed a 23:40 at the Devotion to Children Mother's Day 4M for her only qualifier. Conant aged up in the mid spring to the 60-64 division but not early enough to get a second event to qualify for those rankings. The top three racers were all fifty-nine. Runner-up Andrea Wright had an excellent 8K Race to Benefit the Haven in 34:45. More importantly, she beat fifth ranked and often former champion Kendall Tata at the Sugar Hollow Frostbite 4M, 27:38 to 28:12. Third ranked Suzanne Porter raced a marvelous EOD Warrior Half Marathon in 1:39:09 before moving on to capture the runner-up spot in the 60-64 division. Fourth ranked Carol David was an eyelash behind her at the Blue Gray Half Marathon in 1:39:12. Sixth ranked Anita Freres matched Conant’s six wins as did tenth ranked Connie Glueck. Freres was second overall at the St. Patrick's Leprechaun 10K in 45:41. A month later, she won it all at the Mason Neck 5K in 22:05. Seventh best Allison Woodward ran a credible St. Paddy's Half Marathon in 1:42:26 just ahead of eighth ranked Debbie McLaughlin’s best of three races the Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 1:43:06. Woodward impressed greatly winning at the Potomac River Run Marathon in 3:37:08.

She put down the two fastest 5Ks and the two fastest 4M, as well as all six of her victories in the top nine times overall. Her New Day New Year 5K in 20:03 was a mere second slower than Cindy Conant’s 55-59 division winning event. She was the overall winner at the Holiday 4M in 27:49 as well as the PVTC Easter Classic 5K in 21:38, ahead of fourth ranked Cathy Cea who was third overall in 24:08. Runner-up Suzanne Porter has been quietly dominating at dozens of Bishop Events races. She finished second overall thrice and is known for blistering half marathons, like her Boulder Crest Half Marathon in1:43:36. Still, it was her Bellehaven 10K in 45:44 that earned her second place. 65-69 Women Yorktown Battlefield 10M 1:18:53, 10K = 47:24 Our champion Joey Hallock produced some remarkably fast times, racing the unique distance, 20K-wannabe Tidewater Striders Tune-up 12M in 1:37:16. In December, she had dominated sixth ranked Helen Worthington at the Yorktown Battlefield 10M, 1:18:53 to 1:31:36. Worthington, no slouch, piled up seven wins, including the second fastest 5K in the division, racing the Riverwatch on the Piankatank 5K in 26:22. Hallock also owned the fastest 10K, racing the Elizabeth River Run 10K in a fine 50:03. Runner-up Ida Draim aged up to take the second fastest 10K at the five loop DCRRC Fort Hunt 10K in 52:51. A month later, she produced the fastest 5K, winning the PVTC Easter Classic 5K in 25:31. Third raked Mary Lowe Mayhugh is another newbie with two scores of races as a 64-year-old. Her first five races in the new division were all victories. She was best at the Devotion to Children Mother's Day 4M in 33:30. She prefers the 5K as all 23 of her other races were that distance. Her fastest was the Fallen Soldiers 5K in 26:25. Fourth ranked Bonnie Wifore was close with her Sugar Hollow Frostbite 4M in 33:54. Susan Snead slides in the fifth spot with a nifty Dismal Swamp Half Marathon in 2:00:48. Dru Sexton started the year with a solid Frozen Toe 10K in 55:41 to take seventh place. That was just ahead of Nancy Ferris’s showing at the Memorial Day 10K in 55:59 for eighth place. Ninth place Carol Hansen-Vessa was third in the division with six wins. Her best effort was the swift-course New Day New Year 5K in 26:52. Fewer than half of the huge seventy-nine racers from 2020, just thirty-four runners qualified for the division. For this year, it was the largest division. National Class times (80%) = 52:08 World Class status (90%) = 46:20

National Class times (80%) = 1:36:20 for 90-94; 2:17:03 for 95 and older Rankings Explained - What It Is, Who Does It, How We Do It, and Where We are Going The goal of the runner rankings is to rank the best runners of Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, in five-year age groups, for the purpose of stimulating competition in the Washington region. Runners are ranked only according to performances in rated races. To be rated, a race must meet the following criteria: * Take place in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia * Full results listed on the Web Site * Must list age (and preferably also city and state of residence) of all runners

Page 36: Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best of 2018 Best of 2019 … · 2021. 7. 7. · 1 2021 Winter-Spring Combined Rankings Returning to Racing (November 14, 2020 – May 31, 2021)

* Standard distance--5K, 4M, 8K, 5M, 10K, 12K, 15K, 10M, 20K, 1/2 Marathon, 25K, 30K, 20M, or Marathon * Road race or cross-country * Gun Time To be included, a race must meet all of the above criteria. There will be no exceptions. If you place well in a race and want it included in the rankings, be sure to ask the race director to e-mail the complete results to us at [email protected] so that the race can be counted in the runner rankings. Sometimes runners are confused by the race tracking terms. Chip time simply means that it was electronically timed, not manually. Gun time is the official time. Net time, which is confused with chip time, is merely a feel good time which is tracked by when the runner’s chip first crosses the starting line. Net time will always be faster than the official gun time. Runners are welcome to note net time for their personal use but it has no place in the rankings. In large races, where it is impossible for runners to get to the start for many minutes after the official gun start, we do allow a net time to count as one of the necessary two qualifiers to get a runner to be evaluated. However, that time and any net based age award placement in that race does NOT count towards their placement in the rankings. Runners will be ranked by age divisions for both men and women, with the divisions being open, 19 & younger, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, and 90 & older. The rankings are established using a nearly completely objective rating procedure. A preliminary sort, followed by an intensive analysis of competitive results, forms the rankings. The preliminary sort is based on the number of qualifying marks and best times. The final ranking is based on head-to-head competitive results against the other top placers (fifty percent), with time playing a major but secondary role (forty percent). Our general philosophy is that competition is about beating other runners and we intend to place an increased emphasis on competitive results. To qualify for the end-of-year rankings, runner must run two qualifying races each in each of at least two of the four ranking periods. A runner can qualify for two different age groups in a year. As with the individual seasons, a runner can use a qualifying race from the elder division if it is fast enough to help qualify them for the younger division. Thus, the minimum number of races two double dip and qualify for two divisions would be six races. For example, a 60-64 runner run a qualifying race twice in the winter or spring and then turns sixty-five after the winter and/or the two 60-64 qualifying races in the spring and qualifies for two of the next three seasons with times fast enough for qualification in the 60-64 division. A preliminary sort, followed by a more involved analysis of competitive results, also forms these rankings. The preliminary sort is based on seasonal rankings and best times. The final ranking is again based on head-to-head competitive results, with time playing a secondary role, though at times a deciding role. One special race can at times put a runner over the top, though consistency is a valued asset. I have

devised the Moreland Racing Factor to help in deciding close contests. Qualifying times are set in each age division for the 10K, and then adjusted for other distances. I believe in a constant time so that, while a runner may not make the top ten, he or she may consider himself or herself a ranked runner. My primary concern is that of believability. There should be few surprises. Competitiveness will always find a few disputes. Most runners know who they can best and who remains unbeatable. The rankings should fairly reflect that. If you have comments and questions or would like to receive a more complete explanation of individual rankings contact me at [email protected]. Moreland Racing Factor The Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) has been developed to serve as a check on the ranking process and to provide a status report on this ranking period. This new ranking system is not meant to supplant the old system. It will enhance and refine. It will give runners another look at the ranking process and help make the system more objective. Just as with the quarterback rating in the NFL, the MRF will be loosely based on 95 points (140 with major races), with the premium coming from runners beaten either in the open category or in the age divisions. Runners earn points on their best races in a period based on the qualifiers below. A runner who wins five major races of five different distances would earn a perfect score of one hundred pure points. (75 for win, 15 for fastest, 5 for major, 5 for qualifier) Masters runners are able to get higher numbers. Certainly, a masters runner who earned a hundred pure points is even more impressive than an open aged (20-34) competitor. Category Race

After the pure points have been parsed, we use the following to criteria to delineate racers in the same age group. Head to Head 4 8 (points for victor, negative points against loser) 10K Equivalent 1 (point for each second faster than opponent’s best race versus their best race) -- Additional points can be earned by prevailing over your competition in the same races or by qualifying in more than five races (especially major races). -- Overall winners will be presumed as the 1st in the age group as well. Runners younger than 20 and older than 34 can earn overall winner points. -- Age groups will be determined by the races' scoring system (not necessarily five-year age groups). Runners who are in the overall award category of larger races will be presumed age group winners as well. (Allowing for multiple 1sts in the age group.) For instance, at the Twilight 8K, the top three masters in that special category are all age group winners as well as the winners in each of the individual age groups. -- The same applies for 2nd and 3rd in the age groups. -- The runners with the fastest times in individual distances will be awarded 3 points for each distance from 3M to marathon in that period. Ties give multiple runners points. -- Each time a runner qualifies with a race, he or she will get 1 point. It is possible to run more than five races in a period for additional points. -- Major races are defined as a race with more than 500 finishers or where more than 20% of the runners in that race qualify for the rankings. -- Major races score higher points. -- Each time a runner prevails over a runner with a ranked time in their division, he or she will receive 1 point. The point applies even if the runners beaten do not have a second qualifying race to make the rankings The current qualifying standards for the 10K are: Age Group Men Women Open 34:20 41:15 19 & Younger 38:20 48:45 35-39 36:40 44:10 40-44 38:20 46:05 45-49 39:45 48:45 50-54 42:00 51:45 55-59 43:55 54:30 60-64 49:45 62:05 65-69 52:50 75:00
