zelle or it will starve. It doesntmatter if you are the lion or the
gazelle, when the sun comes up,
you better be moving.
This great quote belongs to Maurice
Greene, the four time Olympic medal
winner and ve time 100m sprinting
world champion.
We may not be in Africa, but the laws of
the jungle still apply. We live in a world
of Rapid Change. The world is becom-
ing a smaller place. Compare to even a
few years ago, Competition has never
been so erce.
Having good results today cant be
counted as your stepping stone to great-
ness. Having good results today doesnt
even mean that you will have the luxury
to enjoy the same benets tomorrow.Having good results today could very
well mean, you may cease to exist to-
morrow should you fail to understand
and effectively deal with change.
General Motors and Ford were the
worlds two biggest car manufactur-
ers in 1985. Where are they now? At-
ari invented the video game business?When was the last time you have heard
of them? Polaroid invented the instant
picture. Some of you might be saying,
oh yeah Polaroid, what ever happened
to them? Nokia was the phone that
dominated the market place going into
the year 2000. Where are they now? Ya-
hoo was the giant when new kids on the
block Google appeared. Who is the big
boy today?
Around the mid to late nineties Apple
was facing challenging times, and with
the help of an innovative and inuential
Steve Jobs, Apple turned from battling
to survive to become one of the most
valuable companies in the world. IBM
was bleeding over 8 billion dollars in
1993 until a non technical CEO by the
name of Lou Gerstner took over and
made some changes. In the words ofForbes magazine Lou Gerstner helped
make IBM dance.
Steve Jobs and Lou Gerstner represent-
ed an attitude. They are examples of
individuals who got it. They understood
a reality - that change is not something
you can control. Change is primar-
ily about you. It is about your people
and their attitude. It is about the way you think as a person. It is about the
way your group thinks. Your competi-
tive advantage will come down to your
ability to understand the simply reality
about change. I have distilled this real-
ity in its simplest form in order for you
to remember it for life. .
I refer to them as the three As to
Change. Accept, Anticipate and Adapt.
In 2002, McDonalds was loosing mar-
ket share. They accepted a reality that
the consumers were shifting towards
making healthier choices about their
meals. Witnessing declining results,
they re-congured their menu in antici-
pation, quickly adapting to a new reality
with healthy meal options for their dis-
cerning customers. This required them
to exhibit courage in the face of changewhich saw them come back through to
post higher than expected sales when
Change

many of their competition complained
about consumers reducing and shifting
spending.
So let me ask you.
Are you Accepting of change? Do you
Anticipate change? And lastly, how
quick do you Adapt to change?
Most people on an individual and even
group level have a natural resistance to
change. Why? Because it would meanthat it takes them out of their comfort
zone. It takes them out of their day to
day routine. It takes them from a place
of knowing, to one that is unknown.
It is ironic when you consider that most
people resist change. Yet you my friend
are the embodiment of change. No cell
of your body today existed 7 years ago.
And in another 7 years, none of your
current cells will exist.
Heraclitus the Greek philosopher said
it wonderfully - Everything ows and
nothing stays xed. Look at the way wecommunicate today. Linkedin, Twit-
ter, Facebook, iPads, iPhones, tablets,
email were all foreign words just a few
years ago, but are now pretty much
words you hear in peoples everyday
conversations.
When was the last time you heard some-
one say, I will fax you a memo
Change is all around you. Be coura-
geous to accept change.
Be agile and anticipate it, and be bold to
get the right advice and make decisivemoves in order to adapt and thrive just
as Apple and McDonalds have.

Your everyday survival will be de-
ned by the choices you make towards
change.
Choose not to do it, and you will face the
fate of Yahoo, Polaroid, GM and Nokia.
Ensure that you remain aware of
change every day. Pay attention and
stay focused.
In doing so, you will spot opportunities,
threats, enhance your ability to be moreproductive and be on target towards
where you would like to go. Get all the
help you can in order to gain your edge
and more importantly keep it.
Dont be a witness of change. Be a driv-
er of it.
