In most instances it has made things easier for us to get things done. For example, paying a bill and not having to go to the post office. It has certainly changed the way in which we communicate and stay in touch with our friends and happenings around the world. For our children, 3D entertainment, reality computer games and social media are all activities which in moderation can provide our young people with much enjoyment, however, overuse can create another set of issues. Google Education is a very powerful modern day teaching tool which supports the delivery of the curriculum. Our student free day was very successful. The teachers learning continues with all teaching staff at Newbery Park Primary being Google Certified by the end of term 2 this year. Maths / Numeracy Numeracy continues to be a whole school learning focus whereby we are implementing the Natural Maths learning structure and strategies. Our critical friend and colleague Ann Baker was with us last week, working with teachers in classrooms. It is the consistency of our approaches and language in maths which is helping our students. For some parents/caregivers maths may seem daunting, however, this does not need to be the case. It is surprising once we start to have conversations about maths with our children how quickly it all comes back. Yes, Newbery Park Primary focuses on the Natural Maths strategies to build each child’s tool kit for when solving complex problems and these strategies may seem un-familiar, however, if we look closely these strategies are strategies which we use as adults on a daily basis. What is different is that we have given them a name. Always remember there is never a right or wrong way or strategy in numeracy and that it is ok to show our children that we are not experts. Demonstrating that we are lifelong learners and willing to learn with your child is invaluable in your child’s development. Our famous numeracy box challenge have started up again. These are a great way to have tea time table discussion about maths. Keep up the great work as parents / caregivers it is never an easy job, but, having a learning conversation will definitely be valued by your child and Newbery Park Primary School. Portfolio Performance Reviews & school reports term 2 All students will receive an A-E report this term which will form a part of our reporting process. ALL A-E reports will be discussed and can be collected at your child’s portfolio performance review. Feedback from our school community has been exceptional about our reporting, assessment and communication processes about student portfolio performance reviews; and in particular student goal setting and achievement. Communication will be sent home shortly with your child about booking times. Volunteers Last week we held our volunteers morning tea. Volunteers do a wonderful job supporting our students, staff and school. Thank you again to all our volunteers. If you would like to become a volunteer please do not hesitate to pop into our front office and find out how you can help out. Digital Tech in Room 11
This Term in Room 11 we have been learning about Digital Technologies. In this subject
we have been learning how to code through the use of a website called code.org. So
far we have been learning about what an algorithm is, what a loop is and what a nested
loop is. We have been using this knowledge to write codes to solve problems.
The first thing we learnt about was what an algorithm is. An algorithm is a set of rules that
must be followed. In our first lesson we learnt how to write a simple algorithm on paper.
After that we were ready to go online and write a code that a program needed to
follow. One of our first aims was to get the red bird to the green pig.
Once we had successfully completed this our next learning intention was to understand
what a loop is. A loop is where you can repeat a command multiple times by putting it
inside of another algorithm. This makes coding easier and shorter.
Currently in Room 11 we are working on understanding what a nested loop is. A nested
loop is where you can repeat a looped command multiple times. This makes coding
easier and shorter. We are all learning how to code and find that it gets us thinking in
ways we have not thought before.
