Berry the Bear

There was a little cub named Berry. He was very adventurous and wanted to know a lot of things. His mom’s name is Janet and she always had to work and was never home.

One day Berry was thinking about something he learned in school, the food web. He asked his mom what ate bears because they didn’t talk about it in class. She told Berry, “You know Berry, I didn’t learn about that when I was in school. I think you should ask your teacher, or try to figure it out on your own. You’d be surprised how easy it is to find something when you actually try.”

Janet had to leave for work later that day, and when she left, Berry took his mother’s advice under consideration, and decided to walk around in the forest near his home.

While Berry was walking around, he came across a snake. Berry thought that maybe he could talk to the snake about the food web, like what he ate, and find out more things about it.

Berry asked the snake if he was a carnivore and ate meats, if he is an herbivore and ate plants, or if he is an omnivore and ate both plants and animals. The snake replied saying, “I love mice!” So then Berry knew that the snake was a carnivore and kept walking around in the forest trying to find out more information.

Berry then came across a deer. When Berry saw the deer, he saw that it was eating something, but couldn’t really tell what it was. So Berry started to talk to the deer and said, “Hey there, my name is Berry. I’m a carnivore. What are you?” The deer responded saying, “I’m an herbivore. I eat plants. Mostly corn, but other plants will do.”

Berry found the deer quite interesting but just wanted to explore a little more. He knew that he had a few more hours before his mom came home so he took advantage of the time he had and walked around a little bit more.

Then, out of nowhere came this dog named Sparkle. Berry thought that she looked fun, and decided to hangout with her for a little bit.

Sparkle and Berry start to have great fun playing together, and are have a fantastic time. But then Sparkles Owner, Tim, came looking for Sparkle and found her and Berry.

Sparkle!

Tim is a hunter. That meant that Berry would be his prey, or an animal being hunted for food!

Oh no!

Page 12: Berry the bear

Berry realizes that this is what they were talking about in school. The different organisms in his environment eating one another was a food chain. Berry then knew he was in danger and ran quickly away from Tim.

I get it!

Berry arrives safely to his home to find Janet is back from work. He tells her all about his experience that day and everything that happened.

I met lots of new friends & learned lots of new things. But I

was almost caught by the hunter.

Janet explains to Berry that this had to be the answer to his question. And told him more about how food chains and food webs work.

Here is an example!

Berry is very excited with all of his new information. He goes and tells all of his friends so that they can all spread the news, and all the critters of the forest are now safer and more understanding.

It’s all about the food chains…

How cool!
