BERNIE WOLFE COMMUNITY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – MARCH 2018 95 Bournais Drive Winnipeg, Manitoba R2C 3Z2 Phone: 958-6532 Fax: 667-9871 Hello to the wonderful Bernie Wolfe families! It is remarkable to me how quickly the months have gone by and that we living and learning in the month of March! During February we celebrated I Love to Read month with many special activities. We had many very special guest readers, and we celebrated reading in all grades from kindergarten to grade 8. February was also Black History month, and we welcomed in the Chinese New Year as we entered into the Year of the Dog. Valentine’s Day parties marked the 14 th in our calendar, and Louis Riel day took place on the 19 th . February might be a relatively short month, but it was certainly not short on special activities! Now that it is March we have finalized our term two report cards and directed our efforts into term three teaching and learning. Term two represents the first time as an entire school division that we have gone paperless for report cards. The future has arrived! Reports are now published to a parent portal for parents to access. This is good news for our families and for our environment. Kindergarten registration is well underway and all families are encouraged to register as soon as possible as this determines our staffing levels for next year. With the unprecedented growth over the current academic year, this is taking on a new importance. As many of you know, Bernie Wolfe is now closed to all out of catchment applications. If you have new neighbours, please encourage them to come down to the school as soon as possible to complete the registration process. As always, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or school administration with any questions or concerns you have. Best wishes to all! In an effort to be more environmentally responsible and eco-friendly, Bernie Wolfe has set up a Recycling Spot
We are collecting old eyeglasses, dried up markers, drink can tabs and batteries. The Recycling Spot is located in the main foyer next to the library.
Please feel free to drop off these items and we will make sure they get recycled appropriately.
Recycling Reminder We are trying to be cleaner recyclers at Bernie Wolfe.
We are reminding everyone that yogurt, jello, apple sauce and pudding containers are all recyclable and we would love to see them in our blue bins but we would also ask that you take a few minutes to rinse them out before they go in the bins. Food left in these containers becomes very stinky and
attracts unwanted pests.
Here are some other sites that provide good recycling information. http://www.simplyrecycle.ca

Month Theme Date
April Assembly April 19 – p.m.
June Assembly - (Volunteer Recognition) June 7 – 2:15 p.m.
June Grade 8 Farewell/Recognition June 26 – 10:00 a.m.
Unfortunately, in the month of January, our friend Mays passed away. She was a brave, kind, caring, ‘a-Mays-ing’ person. To honour her faith and beliefs, we decided to spread kindness and give charity in her name. We decided to raise money for two important charities: The Children’s Hospital and Islamic Relief Canada. We chose these charities because the Children’s Hospital helps sick kids in need and Islamic Relief Canada helps countries in need and those living in poverty. We decided to raise money by having a bake sale February 13th -16th. We are so thankful for all the people who came to support us, and to those who donated items to sell at our Bake Sale. We would also like to thank Mrs. Dram and Mrs. Meilleur who helped us raise even more money by making a special lunch for staff. We still have donations coming in, but we know we have raised over $1,250! We know that this money will go towards helping many people and making a difference in the world!

PAC NEWS
Parent Council just wanted to take a few moments to thank you for your continued support of
our pizza lunch fundraisers. So far we have used this year’s profits to pay for one bus for the grade
6 camp, reducing the cost per student. We also made a donation towards the grade 8 Farewell and
towards the band/music program. Any additional profits made each month are being saved for
playground upgrades that we are planning.
With that in mind, do you know a lot about grant applications? Do you know where we can
find grants that PAC can apply for to help assist with funding our playground upgrades? We need
help getting our playground project off the ground, and if this is something that you are interested in,
then we would love to have you on our team. PAC is always looking for new members! We gather
on the second Tuesday of every month in the family room and we would love to have you join us or
