TheArtofFrenchHospitalityChâteauPapeClément-GrandCruClassédeGraves15minutesfromBordeauxdowntownandtheairportChâteauPapeClémentderivesitsnamefromBertranddeGoth,whoin1305becamePopeClémentV.Afterbeingdonatedtothechurch,itthenchangedownershipseveraltimesuntil the arrival ofBernardMagrez in 1985.Newwinemaking facilitieswerebuilt, the barrel cellar restored, and in 1986 a second wine, Le Clémentin, wasintroducedtoimproveselection.

The radiant neo-gothic Château built in the 13thCentury –with the first harvests implemented in1252, is surrounded by 60 hectares of vines, andfeatures verdant gardens plantedwith thousand-year-old olive trees and stately Lebanese Cedar.JustafewstepsfromtheGustaveEiffelglasshouse,ChâteauPapeClémentrevealsitsperiodcharm.

ChâteauFombraugenamederivesfrom“FonsBrogiera”, meaning, “source surrounded byheather and bushes”. Vineyards have beenplanted in the valuable soils of this formerCarthusianmonastery-Saint-Émilion’slargestGrand Cru Classé - since 1466. In 1867, theestate’svoluptuouswinewasawardedgoldattheWorldFairinParis.

WhenacquiredbyBernardMagrezin1999,acompleterestorationwasundertakentopreserveitsperiodstyle.Thegeneroussinglefloormansionslumbersdownadeepgraveldrive,flankedbystatelytopiarygardens.Alongterraceoverlooks300year-oldtulip trees and a seemingly infinite expanse of vines, which stretch out over 58hectares.Oneof the fivecellars,brimmingwith900barrelsof restingwine, featuresbottlesfrom1871,whileanotherispresidedoverbyalargeantiqueclock.BernardMagrez’spassionforcollectingantiquetimepiecesisrevealedincabinetsofsilvertimepiecesinthetastingsalonandinthegrounds,intheveinsofasundialdatingto1679,orderedbythepreviousowneroftheestate,JacquesdeCanolle.

Named after the medieval squire,JeanCarnet,whohelpedhisLordtoresist the Frenchmonarchy at theend of the Hundred Years War,Château La Tour Carnet played amajor role in the revolutionof theMédoc vineyard. The quality of itswineisrewardedbytheentryintheclassification of 1855 Grands CrusClassés.

ChâteauLaTourCarnetisoneoftheoldestBordeauxwineproducersintheMédoc.Infact,somepartsofthebuilding,includingtheroundtower,datebacktothe11thcentury.ChâteauLaTourCarnetisoneofthefewBordeauxestatestohaveamoatanddrawbridge.Since purchasing the estate in 2000, Bernard Magrez has returned the estate’sChâteau, cellars and 235 hectares to their glory days, marrying cutting-edgetechnologywithtraditionalsavoir-faire.Inthewordsofthepreviouscaretakerofthisnationalmonument,Marie-ClairePèlegrin,itisBernardMagrez’smissionhereto“cutthediamond.”
