And they’re off....I just came back from two days at Saratoga. My husband and I go there every year in August right around our anniversar y. This year we c e l e b r a t e d our 24th year

together. We spent our anniversary day at the track, which was wonderful. I love going there. Too bad it is open for such a short time because I would love to go more often.

We did really well this year winning almost $800! This year made up for all of the years we lost money. We were both just really lucky this time. Race 6 I hit the 20-cent superfecta and the exacta for a total of $445! I was so excited I was shaking. My husband won 6 out of 10 races, whatever strategy he was using was working for him.

The track is a great place to people watch, you see all kinds of people there. Some dressed in shorts and flip flops like me, and others in fancy dresses and heals. It is fun to just sit and watch everyone, watch their reactions when they win and when they lose.

We stayed overnight at the Hampton Inn, which was very nice. The next day we walked around and shopped. We always eat at two restaurants that have gluten free menus - Circus Café and Wheatfields. It is such a treat to have an entire menu to choose from. I always order more than I can eat. Eating out at Wheatfields is really the only time I eat pasta these days. Just because I can, it is nice to not have to go with salad and actually get to eat pasta out. I don’t eat meat or chicken anymore so I am really limited when I go out to dinner. We stopped at one

restaurant that had a couple of special menus I was so excited but when I looked them over the gluten free menu had only choices that involved meat or chicken and the vegetarian menu they offered had meals that all included gluten. Needless to say we didn’t eat there. All in all, our trip was wonderful, I cannot wait to go back next year for our 25th!

As most of you know I recently started my own business called Weigh To Total Health. I consult with people and customize a cleanse program that fits their needs and goals, because everyone should cleanse their bodies at least twice a year. We use the cleanse as a springboard to a healthier lifestyle. I also prepare and deliver meals that are made of all plant-based, whole food ingredients, and are allergy free. In September I will be giving two lectures about the connection with nutrition and our health. Both

lectures will be held at the North Adams Regional Hospital Clark House downstairs in the conference room on September 18 and 20. They will start at 6:30 p.m. and the cost is $20. Call for more informa-tion 413-329-4710, email [email protected] or just show up. Hope to see you there.

Stockbridge, MA. The Berkshire Botanical Garden and Berkshire Community College are offering a certificate program designed for the serious home gardener and the horticultural professional, starting in September. The Horticulture Certificate Program is a well-established, professional development program in its sixteenth year of operation. Classes are held at the Berkshire Botanical Garden, located at the inter-section of Routes 102 & 183, Stockbridge, MA.

Students can either enroll in a single course of interest or work toward a Certificate in Horticulture (Level I), a Certificate in Garden Design (Level II) or Advanced Certificates with a Concentration in Horticulture, Design or Sustainable Horticulture and Native Plant Garden Design (Level III).

Examples of classes offered this fall:

Herbaceous Plants (Level I): Learn about herbaceous plants used in the garden setting, includ-ing identification, planting, fertil-izing, pest control and pruning. Perennial selection will be the focus, with some time spent on annuals and bulbs. Instructor David Burdick, B.S., a distinguished plantsman and collector, shows regularly at the American Daffodil Society exhibitions.

Drafting for Garden Design (Level II): This seven-week studio intensive is essential for students who anticipate working in garden design. Learn basic drafting skills necessary to record and commu-nicate scaled site plans, including scale reading, line drawing, printing a plan and mapmaking. Instructor Steven C. Foster, ASLA, has over 30 years of experience and divides his time between private practice and teaching at the Arnold Arboretum and Harvard University.

Native Plant Selection and Identification (Level III): Both herbaceous and woody plants will be covered, with special focus on plant communities and garden-worthy, low maintenance plants that work well in the managed

landscape. Information on cultural requirements, maintenance, plant combinations and associations will form the framework of this course. Instructor Drew Monthie, M.S., is a horticulturalist, garden designer and ecologist working in upper New York State.

into the local animal shelter and perused the cages to find a new com-panion animal. The shelter was filled to capacity, mostly with pit bulls and other large, abandoned dogs. In one cage I saw a mound of mis-matched fur and realized I had found “the one.”

It was difficult to describe the dog’s appearance. He looked like a cross between an Ewok and Gizmo the gremlin. He was around 3 months old and had been found wandering the streets alone. His cage was marked “terrier mix,” so there was no way to fully know the breed or how large the puppy would get.

Despite the way he started his early life, the dog wagged his tail and was very affectionate to me. Idecided to take the plunge and adopt him. Eleven years later, my dog Happy is still a part of my family. I can say I’ve never met a more laid-back, well-behaved and relatively trouble-free dog -- and that comes with a history of many pet dogs growing up and my father even having owned a pet shop at one point. If Iever choose to welcome another dog into my home, I’m certain I’d go the adoption route.Pets in shelters

According to the ASPCA, many of the shelters operating nation-wide are independent organizations, and there is no reliable means of tabulating just how many dogs enter their shelters every year. It is esti-mated that anywhere between 5 to 7 million companion animals enter a shelter every year. Approximately 3 to 4 million are euthanized, and only 15 to 20 percent are returned to their owners due to microchip or

tag identification. The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy says most of the pets are destroyed simply because there is no one available to adopt them.

There are a number of reasons that dogs end up in shelters. Many times, a family moves and may not be allowed to have pets in their next residence. Sometimes older people can no longer take care of a dog, especially if they’re moving into a nursing home. Some individu-als simply misjudge the size or the responsibilities of having a dog and surrender the animal.Dog adoption

Despite the vast numbers of available pets in shelters, there are many people who continue to think a better dog is one that comes from a pet store or private breeder, especially if a pure breed is desired. Keep in mind that 25 percent of dogs who enter local shelters are purebred, according to the NCPPSP. There are actually many benefits to choosing the adoption route.

• Save a life. There may be no better incentive to adoption than know-ing you are saving the life of a dog that would probably be on its way to being destroyed. You are also saving the life of another animal that can then fit into the shelter and get a chance for a forever home. Even pets that are in no-kill shelters may not have the quality of life that they deserve. Often they are kept in cages, and some actually develop person-ality ticks due to the lack of exercise and confinement.

• Save money. Purchasing a pet can cost a substantial amount of money. Depending on the breed, some dogs can cost hundreds of dol-lars, or even thousands of dollars for designer breeds. When adopting a pet, fees help shelters mitigate the cost of feeding, housing and provid-ing healthcare for shelter animals. Your adoption fee, in part, helps all of the animals in the shelter. Furthermore, the shelter often vaccinates and neuters the animals prior to adoption, helping to save you the cost of these procedures.

• Get a healthy dog. Some dogs at shelters do have special care requirements, but the majority of them are healthy pets. The shelter will have a veterinarian examine and treat the dogs, helping to ensure you start out your life together on a healthy note. This is not always the case with dogs purchased from a breeder. Some pet stores get their dogs from high-turnout puppy mill breeders, where overbreeding may result in genetic problems with puppies or illness from overcrowding.

• Get a dog that’s already trained. Shelters house animals of all age groups; therefore, if a housetrained pet is desired, or one that has learned some commands, you may be in luck. Older dogs may not need the same amount of preliminary training that can make puppies frus-trating. Older dogs may have outgrown boisterous behaviors, making them ideal for quiet households.

• Get a pet that is already socialized. Having spent some time in a shelter interacting with other animals and people may offer a measure of socialization to the pets. It may be easier to acclimate the dog to a new environment. He or she also may be very grateful for having been adopted and be especially devoted.

There are many advantages to adopting a pet from an animal shelter. To find area shelters, look in the classified section of your local news-paper. National Web sites, such as PetFinder.org, can also help men and women narrow down the list of available pets. PE123917

(Lenox, MA) This past June, The Mount was host to famed photog-rapher Annie Leibovitz, Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington, supermodel Natalia Vodianova, and a multitude of actors and writers as they recreated scenes inspired by actual photographs of Edith Wharton and her close circle of friends. The pictorial is featured in Vogue’s September 2012 anniversary issue, its largest ever, on stands now. The photographs are accompanied by an essay, written by award-winning novelist Colm Toibin, that details Wharton’s friendship and sometimes love triangle with Henry James and Morton Fullerton. The pictures and essays, along with a behind-the scenes view with the models, can be viewed online at Vogue.com.

The sixteen-page fashion spread was informed by historical pho-tographs taken during the ten years Wharton called The Mount her summer home. Vogue inspired casting of Wharton’s close circle includes: supermodel Natalia Vodianova as Edith Wharton; writer Jeffery Eugenides as Henry James; actor Jack Huston as Wharton’s lover Morton Fullerton; actress Juno Temple as Wharton’s secretary and companion, Anna Bahlmann; actor Elijah Wood as Cook, Wharton’s chauffeur; actress and Meryl Streep’s daughter Mamie Gummer as Wharton’s niece Beatrix Farrand; writer Junot Diaz as Walter Berry; writer Jonathan Safran Foer as architect Ogden Codman, Jr.; actor Max Minghella as painter Maxfield Parrish; artist Nate Lowman as sculptor Daniel Chester French; and actor James Corden as Teddy Roosevelt.
