The History of BerkeleyIf we want to understand "the Berkeley Spirit" we need to know about the school's background and development.

FoundingBerkeley Campus was the first campus of the ten belonging to the University of California.  Berkeley’s charter was signed in March 1868 by the governor of California. At the same time professor John Le Conte was appointed as an interim president. He served until 1870, when Henry Durant was elected to be the first "real" president. Henry Durant was also the funder of University of California. The University opened in 1869, using former College of California buildings as a temporary home while the real campus underwent construction. In 1871 the Board of Regents stated that men and women should have equal rights at the university.

The North and the South Hall were completed in 1873 and was then relocated to its true home. At this time there were 167 male and 222 female students.

Early development and World War IIIn 1891 Berkeley received generous gifts and could thereby develop dramatically.  Berkeley also got a new president, Benjamin Wheeler who would lead the university on their way to the reputation which it possesses today.  Wheeler also gave the university a more contemporary character. During the 1910s, Berkeley had a significant role in the "Indian independence movement", as Indian students took an active part in forming a radical party. Berkeley also got involved during World War II. Because of the university's cutting edge research facilities the military used the university as an important part of developing the atomic bomb.  The military took over parts of the Berkeley campus, educating their trainees.  The military presence kept increasing and by 1944 more than 1000 military trainees had been educated at Berkeley. The military presence first ended in 1962. 50s and 60s - political influence

Page 5: BERKELEY

After World War II, Berkeley took on the anti-communist loyalty oath and thereby showed their opinion on the cold war. Some of the staff refused to take the oath and were dismissed.  In 1952 there was a reconstruction of the University of California, and Berkeley ended up becoming more independent. During the 1960s there were several "Free Speech Protests" at Berkeley. The students wanted the university to change their strict rules about political activism and wanted Berkeley to acknowledge the students right of free speech. They got through with their protests and this has resulted in the Berkeley we know today.
