Carrying in Norway

From the beginning of time man has carried loads strapped across his back. Fromearly Stone Age hunters returning from a successful hunt, to high mountain farmerstending their flocks, to polar explorers and mountaineers, there has always been aneed: to carry

People down the ages, on all continents and of all races, have developed their owncarry systems. Many appear to be unique to that society, such as the pack frameof the North American Indian. Also, along the fjords and in the isolated valleys ofNorway we find similar, and equally ancient, carry systems. The people of Smoldalencarried their heavy loads through the wilderness, to take their goods to market.Early man crossed the ragged mountain passes of the Jotunheimen – home of theTrolls, to trade and to explore. Rather like the heroes of Jack London’s Alaskaexplorations. Chilcoot Pass has no steeper gradient than those Norwegian farmershad to climb to reach the high mountain pastures.

Ole F. Bergan combined the traditional wood frame, or “neverkonten,” a rucksackmade of birch bark, together with the soft material of the “Grouse sack”.

Bergans Meis og Ryggsekk developed from a culture where people carried heavyloads over difficult terrain – where the founder experimented and developed newmaterials and new designs – he was the right man, in the right place, at the righttime.

The Norwegian painter, Knud Bergslien (b. 1827 d. 1908), painted the famouspicture Birkebeinerne, depicting two loyal soldiers carrying the young prince, Hakon Hakonsson,to safety in 1206. In 1945 Bergans paid N.Kr. 5.000.- for the rights to use the theme. The name

“Birkebeiner” is a registered Bergans brand name. The painting was used as a brand image for a periodof 50 years, and was re-designed as the vignette used on Bergans products today.

Patent No. 20547 – The start of a Norwegian industrial adventure

Ole F. Bergan (b. 1876 - d. 1956) produced many inventions during his career and patented a total of 45. Including; the first step in/stepout ski bindings, an electrical whaling harpoon, a log sled with brakes and a valveless combustion engine. Above all, there was one inven-tion which made his name famous worldwide: the rucksack with a frame. The idea was conceived during a hunting trip at Skrimfjellet in1908. Here Ole bent a juniper branch, and shaped it to the back to give a comfortable fit, and to provide support for his soft sack. Fromthis “prototype” he developed the frame and replaced the branch with light tubular steel and straps. The basic idea was that the sackshould be shaped according to the persons form and height, and that it should sit snugly to the body, whilst supporting the sack frame. This concept is mirrored in every modern anatomical rucksack produced today.

A person who realised the value in the Bergans Meis patent was Christiania wholesaler Sverre Young. He worked together with Ole, andafter a couple of years he bought the patent for N.Kr. 1.500.- Soon afterwards Young sold a considerable consignment of rucksacks tothe Czechoslavakien army. Even though he owned the patent, he made the journey to Tønsberg to share the profits with the inventor.Ole F. Bergan thanked him, but refused, saying: “A deal is a deal”. Sverre Young himself was an active product developer; castor’s, launchedin 1934, were his most famous invention. He was forward thinking, and was probably the first in the rucksack industry to engage his ownproduct designer. Sverre Young enjoyed great success in several fields, and Youngstorvet in the capital city was named after his family.During the 25 years the patent lasted Bergans Meis was the premise provider for rucksacks on a global basis. Bergans in the Englishlanguage came to mean: rucksack. Once the patent ran out most manufacturers used the same construction for their rucksacks.

Bergan’s history is the story about a concept which has set an international standard for rucksack design and development throughoutthe last century.

Ole F. Bergan’s back frame was a tubular steel framewhich protected the back against the contents of thesack and increased carrying comfort. This was animprovement on various frames of wood and birch barkwhich had previously been used. What was new was anintegrated unit of sack, straps and frame. The frameconsisted of tubular steel rods which were bent in theshape of an old-fashioned keyhole with legs spread at anangle. A bow was welded onto the legs which reachedaround the side of the body over the hips. The bowfunctioned partly as a shelf on which the sack restedand partly as a frame around the hips from behind. The sack was fastened on the top of this frame andto the hip bow with leather straps.

Standard wood frame; used over hundreds ofyears, and replaced by the Bergan’s tubularsteel frame.

A patent that became a name, a brand name and aconcept the world over.

The principles of technology from 1930 are not so different from the present. Many of the original concepts, developed by Bergans are to be found

in today’s modern anatomical rucksacks.

Patented width adjustment buckles allows for separate width adjust-ment of the left and of the right shoulder strap. The height and angleof the shoulder straps can also be easily adjusted. Both these featuresallow for individual adjustment, enhanced stability, and greater comfort.

Transfer of weight is directed through the patented shock absorbers. These shock absorbers reduce pressure, especially on the spine andon the knees when carrying heavy loads. The load “feels” lighter!

Three compression straps on each side allow for easy reduction ofvolume when full capacity is not required. This feature moves thecentre of gravity towards the back, so increasing stability.

The conical shaped hip belt has small, continuous air-filled cylindersthat make the hip belt stiff in the direction of load, which in turnallows for even weight distribution over the whole of the hip region.Function is enhanced by comfortable and supportive (long lasting)foam. The whole back region has a air-flow system to reduce sweating.

The QSS system incorporates several constructions which areprotected by patent.

THE QSS CARRY SYSTEM HAS SET A STANDARD FOR THEWORLD’S MOST ADVANCED RUCKSACKS.

This theme was used in Bergan’s marketing for several dekades – and be-came a national advertising icon. The man with the pipe is Ole F. Berganhimself, and was drawn by his brother.

The marketing idea was that the man with a Bergans’ frame ski-ied easilyto the highest mountain top, and even had time to smoke a pipe beforethe next man reached him. The man with the old grouse sack, whichrubbed his back, and was uncomfortable, arrived sweating and worn out.Grumpy too!

One was left to visualise the difference between carrying a sack withouta frame, and one with one!

Yes: having the right sack affected performance, comfort, and pleasure.

International awards and testsBergans has been awarded much distinction and honour over the years. When the patent of the invention of the frame expired 25 yearsafter registration, Bergans was copied all over the world. In many countries (including the US, the Netherlands and China) Bergans wassynonymous with the word rucksack. You can find the word Bergans in Webster’s Dictionary to mean: rucksack. The US had problems with accepting the brand name Bergans because it was not allowed to use the name of a utility article as anexclusive brand name, i.e. Bergans = Rucksack.

Over the years, Bergans has won numerous magazine and consumer body tests at home and abroad. In 2002, 8 Bergans sacks and theBreheimen jacket were test winners – and in 2006 the QSS won the prestigious Silver Ourtdoor Industry Award.

Bergans has manufactured products to meet demanding and varied military requirements.Including special products intended for transport of specialised materials, to splintproof vests andcombat vests. The most utilized were the army rucksacks, used in the First and the Second WorldWar, both in Europe and Indochina. The model Falketind, which was manufactured in 1950, hasbeen the standard model for Norwegian Defence right up to the present. Since 2000 Berganshas delivered military equipment to special forces in Asia, Europe and the US.

In the middle of the 1930s a few carrying frames were made for children where the child sat on a chair welded to the traditionalBergans frame. The child sat with its legs in front and the centre of gravity was far from the carrier’s back. In the 1950s the child satwith its back to the carrier, the centre of gravity was therefore closer to the carrier’s back. It was only in the 1970s that a ”ridingsaddle” was made. It was launched in 1973 and justifiably became popular with child and parent alike. Now the child could look andfollow the direction the parent was walking, making contact between them easier, more fun, and trips with children were given anew dimension.

Disaster: Bergans hit by two large fires.Bergans was hit by fire in 1968, but the most serious fire was in June of 1986, when the factory burnt down to the ground. Onlya few blackened concrete beams were left. Goods and semi-manufactured goods to the value of NOK 20 million were lost –including the patterns for all production. Bergans had to go to sports stores to buy back their own products, so they could takethem apart and draw the lost patterns. All the stocks for the season ´86 - ´87 were burnt, allowing competitors to take overBergans share of the market. Bergans was under insured, in a hopeless financial situation, and it was difficult to win back marketshare. But with hard work the factory was quickly rebuilt, and a year later production started in to one of Norway’s most moderntextile factories. However, with market share gone, and international brands entering the market, it was not possible to achieve aprofitable operation, and the factory in Nord-Odal had to close in 1990.

Bergans 1908 - 2008

World history is full of ideas which appear to be so simple that it is with wonderment one realises that a simple thought canbe creative and innovative. The inventor’s ability to seek creative solutions and the will to create something new is a constantmotivation for further development.

As an active outdoor man and hunter, Ole F. Bergan had experienced that the rucksacks of the day were uncomfortable whenone had to carry heavy loads. He developed the idea of “wearing” the sack, where the frame was an integrated part of thesack, and anatomically compatible with the body. Compact, stable and comfortable – all leading to provide a pleasant carryingexperience. This simple idea developed to solutions that were ground-breaking, and set the standard for present modern sacks.

“None of my inventions came by accident - they came by hard work” Thomas Edison

Behind any viable creation lies a need and a function. The Bergans sack attracted great attention so that it quickly becamea natural choice for hunting trips, expeditions and military forces both at home and abroad. Bergans became a referance brandname: indicating functional products of high quality.

Bergans produced special designed rucksacks for ladies, 6 different models already in 1920.

“If you do not decide to take the next step, you will stand on one leg all your life” Chinese proverb

Bergans was based on innovation, something that has characterised its history throughout the century. An abundant andquality-oriented product range is proof that Bergans never had any plans to stand on one leg. Yes, Bergans may mean ruck-sack, but the company produced much more, including: knives, skis, tents, sleeping bags, canoes, ski bindings, ski boots andclothes for the outdoors – summer and winter – at home and abroad. Many of these products are still produced today –being continously developed and improved.

Bergans, during its first century, became a small part of Norway’s cultural heritage. One remembers ones first ski trip in themountains with a rucksack and the red anorak, of carving a wooden whistle with your first Scout knife, or that special summerholiday in tents with the family. There is every probability that Bergans through its products was also there for someof these experiences.

In 2008 Bergans is one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the development of advanced outdoor equipment and functionalclothing. The co-operation with the ordinary hiker and extreme user plays an important part in the development of Bergansproducts. We see the importance of taking outdoor people seriously – and we hope our products will contribute to yourenjoyment, and safety, in the outdoors in our second century.

Bergans have designed, and produced sleeping bags as far back as1960. The original choice of materials was Elaston for the filling, andcotton for the outer fabric. Blanket bags were produced for familycamping, as well as inflatable mattresses. As people wanted lighterand smaller bags the choice of materials changed – down was theinsulating material and nylon the outer fabric of choice.

After the millennium, new technology makes it possible to weld allthe seams in the bag so that it is as good as watertight. Syntetic ma-terials became lighter, warmer, and dried quicker than traditionaldown – leading to a wide range of specialised sleeping bags to meetvirtually every requirement.

Today Bergans delivers a broad range - from lightweight summerbags weighing 0.5 kg to bags which are intended for use in Arcticregions. Rune Gjeldnes used a Bergans bag when he crossed theAntarctic without support in 2000. Tormod Granheim used Bergansbefore he skied down Everest – in fact, Bergans sleeping bags arefound on all the worlds’ continents meeting all conditions fromdesert to arctic.

Bergans tent production started in a factory in Odalen in1973. At first there was a pyramid shape, then there weretunnel tents in one and two-layer versions as well as a tentwith a self-supporting construction. The one-layer variantwas originally made in Gore-Tex, but was later changed toDermizax™. New qualities such as nylon rip-stop in siliconeelastomer have made it possible to make light expeditionand hiking tents. Production was started early in the 1970sbased on a patent which allowed tensioning ofa framework inside a reinforced fabric withoutthe use of tools. At first, the canoe had around bottom shape, but evolved to a pearshape and came in several models. Some weremeant for quick manoeuvring on rivers whileothers had excellent direction stability andmoved quickly through the water. The size va-ried from solo canoes to family canoes withroom for four people. The canoes have beenused on expeditions to all corners of theworld. Most of the larger rivers in Canada,Alaska and Scandinavia have been paddledwith Ally canoes.

Product history – knives and axes

Bergans knife production started in 1931 with sheath knives, followed by the popular model Sliring. This had aprotruding tip on the handle which could be used to clean/scrape the edge of skis. The knife was different fromexisting whittling/sheath knives having a thinner blade and was made of stainless steel. Bergans offered knives indifferent sizes and models from small Scout knives to large hunting knives. In the beginning production of the knifesteel was done by Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk, but later small specialised producers of steel produced the blades.Bergans has produced over 300 knife models.

Bergans bindings from slalom and jump to cross-country

Bergans symmetrical binding– the right and left ski wereindependent of the binding.

Bergans Micro-tightener was developed in the 1930s and was the first choice for adjustment of jump, slalom and downhillbindings. Bergans Micro-tightener was in use after the war and up to the 1970s. In 1975, Bergans was the first in the worldto produce a symmetrical cross-country binding in synthetic materials. The problem of right and left skis was then avoided. The binding came first as a tour binding in the 75 mm tour standard, then developed to a 35 mm binding. With this, twonew aspects were introduced. One was that the binding gripped the boot like a claw, pulled it into the binding and lockedit. The other was that cross-country boots were designed for bindings and not the other way round. Well-known skierssuch as Thomas Wassberg, the Mikkelsplass brothers, Ivar Formo as well as the Swedish Ladies’ National Team usedthe binding. Bergans skis in honeycomb were an innovative ski construction which was based on aircraft wingtechnology. The skis were extremely light and could be made with different flexibility. Both tour andcompetition skis were produced. A modell called Torpedo was not a great success for Bergans, but was the forerunner of the present shortcut-ski.

Bergans has launched many innovative products, but a new development which wasa decided flop was “Fishot”! Instead of using a fishing rod the hook would be shot out via aslingshot with a reel mounted on it. There were divided opinions among sports fishermen!

Many were of the opinion that the feeling of sports fishing disappeared without castingwith a rod. In addition, the slingshot was produced in plastic that

was so weak that it broke and the elastic sprang back into the fisherman’s face!Very few products were sold on the market, but Fishot was given a broad write-up!

gör höftbältet extra styvt i belastningsriktningen.

The condition for his patronagewas that his son could participate. Together with Amundsen,Ellsworth and the crew on board the airship «Norge» havebeen given the credit for having been the first to discover theNorth Pole from the air.

Robert F. Scott (b. 1868 d. 1912). His expedition reachedthe South Pole one month after Amundsen. Severe cold, badweather, limited rations and illness broke the expedition onthe return journey. He used Bergans rucksacks.

Bergan CastleThis castle-formed nunantak (mountain that rises up through a glacier) is located in the Antarctic and stretches 1590 metres above sealevel. Bergan Castle is named after the inventor Ole F. Bergan for his contribution to the polar research and expeditions in the area. The nunantak was given its name in 1971 by UK-APC (Antarctic Place Name Committee).

Mt. EverestSir Edmund Hillary (b. 1919 d. 2008). In 1953 he participated in a British expedition, led by John Hunt, to Mount Everest in the Himalayas, the world’s highest mountains (8848 metres above sea level). Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a Bhoti-Sherpa, were the first to reach the topon 29. mai 1953. Bergans frames were used during the expedition to carry oxygen bottles.
