FLU INFORMATION As you may have seen on the news, flu season is in full swing. Please take the time to read the following to ensure our students are healthy and our school environment is safe. As a precaution, and as is custom this time of year, our custodians are working hard to disinfect common surface areas such as water fountains, rails, restroom surfaces, doorknobs, etc. and keeping restroom areas stocked with soap and paper towels. If your child has a fever (100 degrees or higher), vomiting or has diarrhea in the evening or morning before school, he/she should NOT come to school that day. Students with a fever should remain home fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. To help prevent illness, good hygiene is key. This includes washing hands frequently, avoiding touching eyes, hands, and face, covering mouth/nose when sneezing or coughing, and avoiding close contact with others who are ill. Please see the following information on flu with helpful reminders to share with your student(s): goo.gl/uMKU8u. Thanks for all you do at home to keep our students as healthy as possible and in school! Please contact me with any concerns. Sincerely, Melodie Havlick, RN, BSN Sycamore Springs Elementary School Nurse 512.858.3904

Dear SSES Parents, It's already been a busy semester at SSES and while it sometimes feels like the countdown to summer is well underway, there are lots of great events on the horizon as we head into spring! With your continued support, PTA remains committed to enhancing the experience of every child enrolled at Sycamore Springs Elementary. So far this semester we have been able to hold grade level Spelling Bees, invite all classes to the MORE Store, help students create beautiful Rangoli art projects, provide chips and queso to the teachers on early release day, and continue sponsoring new supplies and learning materials for teachers as they engage and educate our children. Coming soon: the Talent Show, Movie Night, guest speakers, the Fun Run, snacks for students taking the STAAR tests, Teacher Appreciation Week, and our final MORE Store of the year. We appreciate all the volunteer hours that contribute to making these events a success - thank you! Our most recent PTA meeting was very productive, with the most significant discussion centering around preliminary plans to bring shade cover to the playground. PTA members voted to allocate funding toward this Phase 1 initiative, which will bring some shade and tables to our playground area. More details to come, but with funds available and dedicated to this project, we are making progress. Many thanks to our Shade Committee, Jennifer Edwards, Chris Rolfsen, and Eric Knustrom, along with Mrs. Ray, for doing the legwork and handling the logistical details involved in adding any new structure to the facility. Once we have more information about pricing, we will be able to start considering Phase 2, which will be bigger in scope and will require more resources and planning. This spring, PTA will be laying the groundwork for next year's leadership. At our next meeting we will be electing our Nominating Committee whose job is to propose a slate of officers for election into Board positions. New officers will be voted in during our April meeting. In addition to President, VP of Membership, VP of Programs, VP of Fundraising, VP of Communications, Treasurer, and Secretary, the Board is proposing the addition of a VP of Enrichment and VP of Hospitality. These are key roles in our school that deserve a dedicated overseer. We will vote on the proposed changes at our March membership meeting. If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee or voting on these changes, please plan on attending this important meeting on March 8th at 8:00 in the Sycamore Room. We would love to have you consider investing your time and talents in the SSE PTA in one of our Board positions or many event coordinator positions next year. We can't accomplish all of the amazing PTA programs that run at SSE without your support! I am happy to share information about individual roles so you can see what would be a good fit for you. Anyone who serves on a committee or votes must be a member of PTA. You can join at joinpta.org and choose our district and school. On behalf of the SSE PTA Board, we are thankful for such a giving parent community and are committed to setting PTA up for success next year. Thank you, Karen Scott
