THE Victorian Energy Ef� ciency Target scheme which was available only to residential properties is now open to
businesses.Following regulatory changes the
scheme is now accessible to eligible small and medium businesses and non-residential properties, allowing them access to Small-Scale Technology Certi� cates and Victorian Energy Ef� ciency Certi� cates.
According to local Bendigo EcoSmart Solar dealer, Jill Barker, this is great news for businesses, and said that with the phasing out of electric hot water systems in 2012 it will be an opportunity for businesses to take advantage of the rebates to make the cost of solar hot water more affordable
“The changes to the VEET legislation is great news for businesses as they will now be able to create certi� cates under most of the activities which households can, and also receive great rebates in return for doing so,” Jill said.
At current levels, businesses will be eligible for up to $3000 off the cost of a solar hot water system providing a greater incentive to make the switch over from an existing electric hot water system, and discover the economic and environmental bene� ts.
“Increases in energy prices will affect all sectors of the economy so improving energy ef� ciency for businesses with a solar hot water heater already makes � nancial sense and will be even more important in the future,” Jill said.
According to Ecosmart the federal government assigns energy savings values to eligible solar hot water systems, which includes the range of EcoSmart solar hot water heaters and heat pump water heaters.
As a result of their environmental advantages these systems are assigned
energy certi� cate rebates from state and federal governments for their ef� ciencies.
The VEET scheme is designed to make energy ef� ciency improvements more affordable, contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, and encourage investment, employment and innovation in industries that supply energy ef� ciency goods and services.

ROSES can be in need of a bit of rejuvenation at this time of year for that nal � ing of � owers.
Prune your roses back by about a third retaining a vase shape.
Remove any diseased � owers and leaves including those affected by; black spot (black spots on the leaf) and powdery mildew (a white powder on the leaf and control with Triforine or a sulphur spray.
Thrips (which look like tiny iron
lings) are usually found in the bud of a � ower, as the bud opens you can see that the bud is deformed, it will not recover so remove affected buds. Spray your plant with Con dor or a general rose spray to stop any more damage.
Aphid (a small usually green insect) on the stem and � owers can also cause deformed � owers and leaves. You can squash them individually or spray them with soapy water, but these methods may need to be repeated alternatively Con dor and rose sprays are effective.
Give your plants a generous feed after pruning, blood and bone is my favorite, but there are many foods on the market.
Whatever you choose water it in well and top your mulch and you’ll soon have a fantastic show of this wonderful � ower for autumn.
VEGETABLES The end of the summer vegetable patch is fast approaching. Lettuce, spinach and other leafy vegies can still be planted but autumn is coming, so where you crops have nished you can start to prepare for your next season.
Turn your empty beds over and add manures and compost in readiness for your next plantings.
Remember to keep the water up to your plants in February, it’s traditionally the hottest month in the year.
FRUIT TREESMost stone fruit trees will have nished their cropping by now. Once the fruit has been picked it is a good idea to give them a prune now to avoid infections from Silver Leaf and Bacterial Canker. These problems can occur if the plant is left until winter to prune.
Pick cooler days for pruning, too hot can damage the plant.
