WELCOME TO BEN NEVIS
FREE DELIVERY TO MAJOR CENTRES AUSTRALIA WIDEJ-BAS 7, SIRE VERIFIED AND GENOMICS
The last few years have certainly tested our sense of humour but a lot of good has come out of something that was really tough. With 600 commercial cows on agistment in Victoria, 400 cows in confinement feeding and weaning the calves down to six weeks it really tested our resolve and clarified for us where we want to be.
The good news is we still want to be here, doing what we love and are eternally grateful for the opportunities but we know we have to be smarter. We see a future that requires animals to have less days on feed for economic, health and environmental reasons but still require absolute quality.
While it’s important to measure efficiency at a feedlot level, it’s also important to identify those animals that do better on pasture when all animals are treated the same. That’s what matters most to our clients. And if we are pushing for less days on feed we need to identify not only animals that meet specifications but do so earlier especially for sexual maturity in breeding stock, weight, fat cover and IMF.
By supplying yearling bulls we have been pushing the system and identifying these early performers for 20 years now and this is reflected in our herd. We are prouder of this years bulls than any that have come before them. Weaned to as young as six weeks, it was hard to believe that we would even have a sale let alone have them exceed all of our expectations.
The conditions experienced last year were a real litmus test for Yearling Bulls at work and we are more than ever convinced of their advantages. Less injuries to bulls and heifers/cows, high conception rates and more calves over their lifetime meaning lower costs per calf.
The best feedback that we receive though is that they are very quiet and easy to work. Temperament is the No 1 priority in our book and is not negotiable. Life’s too short to not enjoy being around cattle or worrying you will get hurt.
MARKETSOn some traits that we have accelerated genetic gain over the last ten years like growth and IMF we are now confident that we are in the pocket to ensure our clients can meet the requirements of the premium market specifications for the Jap B3, Chinese middle market and branded beef products.
To push blindly on these in the mind-set that 'more is best', could overshoot these market specs and be to the detriment of other traits we value highly such as type, structure, constitution and ability to finish and do on pasture. What we really need is to evaluate our individual needs and identify the sweet spot for the type of cow herd we want in line with the type of country we have. Australia is not the prairies of the US or the grasslands of South America. Our cattle need to get their heads up, walk further and do better on less.
COVID SAFEWe have a COVID plan and will follow all current COVID protocols on sale day.
CAN'T MAKE THE SALEIf you can’t make sale we strongly recommend following the process outlined on Page 39 of this catalogue and register and bid online. We would greatly appreciate it. We will plan for both a physical auction and an on-line auction with a comprehensive catalogue of lot photos and videos at www.bennevisaustralia.com.au and auctionsplus.com.au to help you with the decision making process. All animals will be independently assessed for frame and structure. We invite your inspection by appointment and would love to answer any questions you may have.
Yours, Stu and Erica (Hap) Halliday

THE BULLSWe are very proud of this year's bulls. Every one has been Sire Verified and has Genomically enhanced EBV’s that more accurately reflect their breeding value and give you greater confidence and choice than ever before. Given our commitment to type, we feel very positive about our direction and the value that we can add to our clients’ herds.
There will be twenty 18 month old bulls and fifty six 12 month old bulls in the catalogue. There are a number of stud prospects in the sale. Please remember when looking at the raw scan and weight data that the 18mo and the 12mo old are different contemporary groups and have been colour coded accordingly in the EBV Summary.
As always, we have kept semen on a number of bulls to progeny test in our commercial herd. We guarantee the bulls and have been rigorously culled them for temperament and feet. Structure and temperament scores as well as Ultrasound Carcase Scanning on the boys has been independently assessed by Roger Evans Accreditation No – 1018 and can be found on pages 7 and 8.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF BULLS
All bulls have passed a semen test and physical examination by Dr Chris Hallet, Coolah Veterinary Clinic including;
– Semen motility– Palpation of internal genitalia– Palpation of Scrotal contents– Visual inspection of overall structure, including feet– Visual inspection of locomotive ability.
MANAGEMENT
We take great pride in our established reputation for quiet cattle. These yearling bulls have had consistent contact with humans and dogs since weaning.
The bulls have been handled with dogs, horses, utilities, ATVs and on foot. We know each bull’s temperament and are confident that under normal circumstances they are of sound temperament. However, these are still animals and we ask that you treat them kindly and with respect, especially on Sale day with the pressures of new people invading their space.
HEALTH
The bulls are ready for immediate use and we recommend using a yearling bull at a rate of 1 to 35 cows in their first year and 1 to 50 for every year after.
All bulls have been tested PI (pestivirus) negative and vaccinated with 7 in 1 (Lepto), Pestiguard and Vibriosis. They have had regular doses of Vitamin A, D, E, Vitamin B12 and drenched with Eprinex pour-on and Fasinex Oral on 1 August 2020. Bulls sold to Queensland will be blooded and vaccinated for three day sickness at our expense.
120 TOP PICK HEIFERSThese heifers represent an unprecedented opportunity to invest in the heart of our program, which has always attracted premiums in the market place. They are Spring drop and ready to join, vaccinated with 7 in 1 and Pestiguard, drenched with Fasinex Oral and Eprinex, early yard weaned, bunk trained, dog, bike, horse, calm man and mad woman trained.
These heifers will be auctioned in live time before the bull sale at 12.30pm sharp on sale day and will physically be run through the ring. They will also be interfaced with AuctionsPlus in live time. Look for details on AuctionsPlus from the end of August 2020.
WHY RAW DATA?The academic purists get upset when we include raw data. Our logic is this – When everything is treated the same it is important to us which ones do the best especially for IMF and growth. This is, after all, the basis of BREEDPLAN. Practically speaking if an animal says it is in the top 5% of the breed for IMF EBV we like to check that it performed in a commensurate way within its contemporary. Please note raw data is only useful within a contemporary group, you cannot compare raw data between herds or animals within herd that have been treated differently. In our sale there are two contemporary groups – the 12mo old bulls and the 18 mo old bulls. When looking at their raw data you cannot compare the two groups.
WHY SCANNING? Scanning is the most commercially viable and time effective way to measure carcase traits because you don’t have to kill the animal to get it, and it’s easily measured when they are yearlings and in good enough condition. In animals with more than 6mls of fat the correlation between scanned and actual traits if 0.7. This is meaningful and very useful.
In heifers this fat level is usually achieved at scanning but in young bulls this isn’t the case where fat levels are often less than 6mls, there correlation of scanned to real traits drops to 0.4. The issue here is that many bulls when they are scanned don’t have enough fat on them to scan so they have not yet triggered marbling and the differences are not evident. This is not the case with our yearling bulls as most average over 6mls of fat.
Age is another trigger for marbling. We scan at 10 – 12 months and are aware there are some bulls that will marble later on but it has not yet been triggered. However we are targeting the ones who express marbling earlier as well as the actual levels of marbling they achieve. These will be the animals who, in the future, will reach their targets more quickly and reduce costs while increasing turnover. We consider this very valuable information as we aggressively target the premium high marbling markets.
PREPARATIONThe bulls were early weaned using the innovative AIM protocol at six to twelve weeks because of the drought. They were fed Canola hay and DDG pellet until the rain came in January and have been on pasture and oats since. We are very proud that we have been able to present them to express their genetic potential and have them fit, strong and well grown, ready to go straight to work.
We are happy to blood bulls and give three day vaccine for bulls sold to Queensland and will work in with you for the best delivery time so they adapt.
THIS YEAR'S BULLSTHERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO INVEST IN QUALITY

WARRANTYThe vendor warrants that:
Bulls are fertile and capable of natural service within six months of the date of Sale to the purchaser (Warranty Period).
The vendor will either:1. Provide a satisfactory replacement; or2. Provide a credit for use at the next Ben Nevis Angus Bull Sale equal
to the purchase price (excluding any costs and expenses of the purchaser in taking delivery) minus salvage value.
Where: 1. The purchaser claims a bull is infertile, upon purchaser submitting
a 2 x Veterinary Reports 10 weeks apart stating the bull is infertile (semen) OR 1 x Veterinary Report stating the bull is incapable of natural service, and a Statutory declaration by the purchaser to the effect that the substance of the report is true and correct. The Veterinarian must state that in their opinion there is no evidence that the bull has suffered any injury or illness during the Warranty Period which could have affected his breeding ability. The Veterinary Report and the Statutory Declaration must be forwarded to the vendor within 14 days of the Warranty Period expiring.
BULL HANDLINGOn arrival at their new home it is important a suitable mob of animals is yarded to greet the bull to minimise his stress. Suitable animals include pregnant cows, steers, but certainly not other bulls.
The bulls are in good joining condition at the point of Sale, but it is imperative to ensure good nutrition for the bull during the joining period. You should check bulls regularly to see they are working, especially in the early stages when most problems occur and early intervention can minimise the damage to the bull and conception rates. After joining, bulls should be drenched and placed on good pasture to get back into good condition.
HEALTH AND SAFETY OF VISITORS AT OUR SALE (RULES AND ADVICE)All the sale bulls have been screened for temperament and are quiet to handle under normal circumstances; however there are inherent risks associated with cattle handling.
VISITORS ENTER THE CATTLE PENS AT THEIR OWN RISK. CHILDREN MUST NOT ENTER THE YARDS.
People entering the yards are at risk of injury. Be especially alert for bulls fighting. We do not expect the bulls to be aggressive with humans, but Sale Day places extraordinary pressure on them. Remember, even the quietest bull is in fact an unpredictable animal.
Do not crowd the bulls or loiter inside the pens. We cannot cover every example of the dangers of cattle handling so please use common sense and be alert at all times. Please call on any of the Landmark Agents for an escort through the bulls if required.
All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and the vendor assumes no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.

Nature intended bulls to work at 12 – 14 months of age. This is when they become sexually mature but they’re still light and agile so they can learn their new trade without a high risk of injuring themselves. This is not the case for bulls first used as two year olds who are often fed up to big weights for auction and therefore run a higher risk of injury while gaining sexual experience.
LOWER COSTS PER CALFAccording to research by NSW Agriculture in the 1990’s bulls used as yearlings not only have a lower incidence of breakdown or injury but a proven longer working life. This equates to:
• More calves over a longer period and, • Lower costs per calf

EASIER TO MANAGEAt Ben Nevis we have been using yearling bulls for over 20 years. Our experience is backed by our clients and suggests that bulls used as yearlings are much easier to manage both in and out of the cows. Why? We believe it’s because they are out working as their testosterone kicks in instead of being in a big mob with other bulls learning to fight and bully out of sexual frustration.
AM I NOT PRETTY ENOUGH?Because yearling bulls are working and still growing (they can get a little too enthusiastic about their work) they can come out of the cows looking ragged. Rather than a bad sign it’s a good sign that he had been working for you. They don’t need special treatment just a good paddock and a dose. If not fed up at this stage (ie put on rye grass) then he will still eventually recover but probably won’t make his mature weight potential until he is 3 or 4 years of age (if at all). The up side of this is that less stress is placed on his skeleton for life so he will always be more agile and less injury prone In the words of reputable cattle producer and educator Sandy Yeates. “If our beef industry is to make progress, we must purge our minds of the belief that a bull has to be fat and well grown to be any good. The value of a bull should be measured by the performance of his offspring, not on what he looks like”.
CAN I REACH A COW?Short answer is yes, but the laws of physics apply and you should use well grown yearling bulls. Most of our bulls go over cows. Angus by nature have high libidos and are very resourceful.
HEIFER BULLSJust because he is a yearling does not make him a ‘heifer bull’. As with any bull his effect on calving ease is determined by genetics for birthweight and shape and other factors like nutrition and environment. However suitable heifer bulls used as yearlings will mean less injuries in heifers as well, due to their lower weight and they can be used over heifers for more years as they take longer to reach their mature weight.
HEALTHNot everyone can produce yearling bulls. It is critical that the bulls are rigorously culled and well grown and that they are tested for reproductive soundness. To ensure this we employ a disciplined weaning, nutrition and bull education program to ensure they are:
• Extremely docile and manageable• Well grown (averaging 500kgs + at 12 months); and• Sexually mature with scrotal >30cm at 12 months and semen
tested.
GUIDELINES FOR USEDon’t put yearling bulls out with older bulls or bulls that are significantly bigger in size in the first year. These bulls will significantly injure him while he is learning to serve.
In our commercial herd we put groups of yearling bulls out together and often put four brothers in with a mob of 100 cows. This has improved not only our conception rates in some of our steep, rugged country but also increased the uniformity of our calves and reduced the calving spread. Despite the large distances and terrain there is always someone on duty.
Other guidelines:
• Join to 35 females in the first year and normal levels thereafter• Join for no longer than six weeks• Make sure he is up to date for Parasites, 5 in 1• Added boosts come from Selenium, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin A,
D and E shotsEventually your yearling bull will grow into a bull we can be proud of because of his calves, his contribution to your gross margin and his dashing good looks. With the money saved this can be put towards buying an even higher performance bull in the future and maximising genetic gain.

USING EBV PERCENTILESSelecting the right bull for your business needs to be as easy as possible. So we have incorporated percentiles into our catalogue as an extra tool to help you.
A percentile value allows you to see where an animal sits in the breed for each trait. This gives you more information that an EBV figure alone. For example, if an animal sits in the 30th percentile for IMF it means it is in the top 30% of the breed. But, if an animal sits in the 80th percentile it means that 80% of animals are better than it. Generally the lower the percentile figure the better, except in the case of some traits where moderation or balance is preferred like Mature Cow Weight and Scrotal Size (can be too big), or BW (too small and frail at birth).
Information on Percentiles courtesy of Trio Angus.
The 600 day weight of this bull sits in the 80th percentile, meaning 80% of animals are better than him for the trait.
The IMF of this bull sits in the 30th percentile, meaning he sits in the top 30% of the
breed for this trait.

This gentle giant is the type of bull to give you massive leverage in your breeding program. Quarterback would join exceptionally well to LD Capitalist and Baldridge Command daughters adding depth of flank, softness and length of side. He ranked second in scanned IMF and an equal first for EMA. He is one of the quietest bulls we have ever bred and loves a scratch. He is a heifers first calf and she is an ET calf who is the maternal sister to the $26,000 Loaded Gun who sold to Cascade in 2016. Stud potential semen collected. Frame 7.5.

We are never surprised when E123's sons make the top pen and this year her Grandson is also the Lot 4 bull. It goes to show not only how good but how consistent these genetics are. Quay is impeccable in his structure and fills it out with kilos and kilos of high quality meat tying deep in his quarter. Love his skin, love his docility – he is a pleasure to work with. What we love about Beast Modes, and you will see it right through the sale, is that they have put the constitution back in Angus, set their tail back where it belongs, added softness big ribs and great fronts. It is very rare to find a bull this handsome with a smoking set of EBV's and then scorch his contemporaries for actual performance. His extra girth, skin, sire appeal and quality edge make him a real find. Quantico scanned second in his contemporary for EMA with high IMF. See his tank of a dam in his online video. Yes we are very fond of him. Suitable for heifers. Stud potential. Semen retained. Frame 6.5.

While a foot abscess knocked some condition off this big fella he is starting to power again. An upstanding sire he moves with great purpose and athleticism and is pure power and sire appeal. He will add kilos of weight onto the scale and stretch earlier maturing animals to give them more market flexibility. Similarly bred to Lot 2 (E123 is his Grandam) he has valuable Donor dams right through every branch of his pedigree whose sons consistently make our top pen. Stud potential. Suitable for heifers. Semen retained. Frame 7.

Stu's favourite bull in the sale and he is very hard to fault. Impeccable structure, tons of meat throughout his spine, length of body, docility and hair type indicating his softness. He has an equally impressive set of arithmatic and seriously bends the curve to give you safety over heifers, while punching out more kilos at the business end. First in his contemporary for scanned EMA, and third highest fat and IMF. A star performer. Suitable for heifers. Frame 6.

The first of the Monarch's and you step straight into pure quality. Skin, softness, docility and by far the highest scanning IMF bull in the sale (just like Monarch was) and in fact the highest IMF we have ever scanned for a bull (his father having that title before him). Fall in love with his type and understand the type of daughters he will leave you. Again we have a product of our stepped up ET program with his dam a full ET sister to Lot 11's dam. Qualify is an incredibly athletic bull that we would recommend a high workload to. He never settles with the bull mob and is always on the prowl for cows. Don't worry he is very respectful of fences courtesy of an upbringing with 8,000 volts, but he just wants to work. He both scanned with a high IMF and posts an equivalent EBV and with his extra stretch in his frame would suit the production of Jap B3 and other high quality branded products. Frame 6.5.

We have simply fallen in love with this bull. He has such a wealth of quality starting with his broad muzzle and head across his thick strong spine and right into the seat of his silky pants billowing with muscle and we know on the inside he is stacked full of IMF. His skin has to be felt to be believed. He scanned the fifth highest EMA in a large contemporary. Although BREEDPLAN has been a bit unfair in the growth department we can't expect them to always get it right. Quorum will breed exactly the high quality, easy keeping, weight like lead progeny we need. Frame 5.

Well what a way to start off the yearling bull section than with an absolute stonker of a bull, with a chiselled front end and thumping booty out the back end. He scanned with the equal second highest IMF and EMA in his heifers first calf contemporary. Remember all animals are treated the same and some just excel – Quigley is one of those. This Beast Mode x Judo cross is hot. If you miss out on this fellow try his Geneticals in the following Lot, or Lots 29 and 49. Frame 5.5.

Quartz or 'Stumpy' as we have nick named him is very exciting. He is a favourite among all who see him and we feel he has something special. Its rare for a bull with so much physical power and dimension to have such a great set of data. Every time we weigh him, scan him, or get him genomics tested he continues to improve and shine. A heifers first calf he was the heaviest, highest scanning IMF (overall as well), equal third fattest and equal highest EMA. Stud Sire Potential. Semen collected. Frame 6.5

Another thumping performer out of our massive Rachis donor cow. The first thing you notice about is that he is as long as a wet week and has a coat so fine and dark and shiny it glistens like a snake. It's no surprise he clocked the equal third highest IMF scan. The next thing you realise is he oozes potential and has plenty more scope to grow to be a big bull with presence. Like Quartz Lot 23, he has excelled in this contemporary and along with his second highest IMF he scanned as the fattest with the second biggest EMA. Stud Sire Potential, semen collected. Frame 7.

The first of the Milwillah Proceed L117's and what a sire group they are. Quantum Leap has tremendous head and sire appeal and is so long and heavy you feel like freight train is rumbling past. But he is much prettier than that and is perhaps the most attractive bull in the sale, his highlight being the width, breadth and length of his top. He was the top scanned EMA in the large contemporary and was way out in front in that category as well as third highest for fat. Frame 7.

A carbon copy of the bull before him with the same thump and handsome head but with more depth of flank and quarter. We love the balance and the eye appeal of these bulls and they offer great flexibility with the markets and environments they can be put to. Just a thumper. Probably our favourite of the L117's in term of body shape and the royalty of his pedigree with no less than three of his maternal sisters in our Donor Program. Being an older cow and by the legendary Infinity his dam has not been credited the growth EBV's of some of the other cows in the herd, but I would beg to differ that this guy is anything but near the head of the pack for weight gain so make your own decision. Suitable for heifers. Frame 5.5. Pictured on page 23.

BALDRIDGE BEAST MODE
Beast Modes dam Baldridge Isabel is a powerhouse and it’s from her that he inherits his volume, depth of rib and proud front end while from his sire GAR Prophet he inherits his carcase characteristics. The Beast Mode progeny are quiet, freakily soft, thick and deep. It’s like Christmas as we await each Beast Mode calf born here with such excitement and this is our third year of using him.
RENNYLEA J474
We used J474 in fire-ice fashion to inject more IMF under the hide to lift our bottom line. He is large framed and sound with the carriage and extended front end we strive for.
MILWILLAH PROCEED L117
A bull with an impeccable combination of pedigree and type. His sons are standouts in this sale and all stamped with his outstanding structure, thick strong tops and massive hind quarters.
BEN NEVIS NEWSFLASH
A very special bull for us from our favourite Donor Jean H215 he combines her traditional quality with Proceed’s carcase and is docile, thick, an outcross and an ultimate spunk. Purchased by Bannaby Angus for $24,000 in 2018.
MILWILLAH REALITY L19
L19 was selected from the 2018 Milwillah Sale for his deep rib, doing ability and carcase attributes. He is a real cow maker and his daughters are big and roomy with a soft skin. His full ET brother was the Sire of the 2019 Milwillah Sale topper at $62,500
BEN NEVIS MONARCH M128
A simply beautiful bull who displays what we have been working towards in good old fashioned quality with a wealth of carcase under the hide. A real gentleman and breeding the house down here with soft, deep kind daughters and sons. Easy doing, slick coated and thick with excellent feet.
REFERENCE SIRES

With all the bulls we use we make sure they are backed by a special cow family that is highly regarded. This explains why 70% of our catalogue has a maternal grandsire that goes back to our own stable because it’s not only about quality, but consistency.

Just in case missed out on the quality and consistency of these Milwillah Proceed L117's we thought we would throw down another one – they are all this good. Quasimoto scored the coolest name so has always been one of our favourites and is a Genetical (genetically identical Sire x MGS) to the previous Lot. He has tremendous sire appeal, length and muscularity and was the second highest scanning EMA, fifth in IMF and third for fat in a large contemporary. Frame 6.5.

The biggest show off in the whole group and always bustles to get the front of the camera. Qarma may well be the star of our Sale and represents all we are striving to achieve. He was born small and unassisted out of a two year old heifer and then quickly grew to this hulking mass of muscle, capacity and softness. On top of everything he has extra style and is a real personality. A genetical to Lot 22, 23 and 49 and what a magic cross it is. Suitable for heifers, super quiet. Stud potential. Semen retained. The first of the Nixons and you will notice they have something special about them. Our bloodlines always blend well with Banquet's and they add just that extra edge to our program. Qualifier has soft, thin skin that is as supple as his movements. He was the equal second highest IMF and third highest EMA scan in his contemporary. He is proud and agile with a wealth of quality natural thickness along his spine. He is a super curve bender and is a luxury choice for heifers that will give you thumping weaners. Frame 5.5.

Quake is a very similar style of bull to the previous lot. He is also out of a first calf heifer but will grow into a slightly larger framed bull. An absolute cow maker and the added outcross of the Judo x Nixon combinations gives him a double dash of quality. Quake has a beautiful shoulder and good neck extension combined with low birthweight which will make him a wonderful choice for heifers. With the equal highest EMA and fourth highest fat you can be assured his calves will have thick, juicy tops. Frame 5.5.

The first of our Milwillah Realty L19 bulls who is a full ET brother to the sire of Milwillah's $62,500 sale toppe in 2019. Quambone has a terrific head and constitution with a long straight spine and impeccable structure. This is the type of bull who will leave you with a beautiful line of females. With his beautiful fine skin and coat it is no accident he was the second highest IMF scan. He also posted the fourth highest EMA and second highest fat levels. Use with confidence to target the premium markets. Q231 is a Genetical to the following Lot and Lot 46. Suitable for heifers. Frame 6.

Quanbean is a full ET brother to the $28,000 Ben Nevis Nirvana who sold to Innesdale Angus in 2018. He is also a maternal brother to our iconic Judo who features so heavily here in the dam pedigrees of our highest performers. Having come from a recipient contemporary group away from here he started behind the eight ball and has just powered. Don't miss him he as he is special with a beautiful skin, a powerhouse top and a square hip. Could this be Judo reincarnated? Has not had genomics conducted yet. Stud potential. Semen collected. We feel Quizmaster has so much potential with his overall combination of natural thickness, softness, style and balance. His dam is a Donor dam and his three maternal brothers sold for $13,000 in 2016, $15,000 in 2017 with his third brother being kept for stud duties. In the flesh Q162 is every bit as athletic and showy as Nixon and he boasts a very sexy set of numbers backed by being the fifth highest IMF scan for IMF. Frame 6.

You can tell which bulls we rate the best because they get the cool names. Quidditch must have shown himself early and now continues to command attention. He is a solid rooster carrying his relative length from hip to pin which gives him the balance and style to hold all his muscle. We love the spring of rib in this young bull and the width through his spine and out through his hip. A really good blend of Lionheart's power with J474's carcase. Hard to believe this is a heifer's first calf. His progeny would ideally target the Jap B3 or premium branded beef markets domestically. Frame 5.

Long and thick like a sausage and wrapped in the finest cloak. Despite his width throughout he manages to refine through the front end with a longer neck making him and ideal choice for heifers. What a massive effort for the youngest bull in the draft by a good degree to get the equal fifth highest EMA overall. We fast tracked this spunky young bull into the sale as he is a power performer. Out of a massive cow Quantanimo, he just looks like he owns the place and rents next door. Very expressive hindquarter, a butterfly rib and a powerful stance. Super, super quiet and likes a scratch. If you missed out on feature Lots 22, 23 and 29 then Quip represents another opportunity. He is a Genetical to them and we are very excited about this Beast Mode x Judo one. It's no surprise that Quip is very similar in the flesh to his brothers, especially to Lot 29 with his soft skin, supple movement and natural thickness. Quip expresses a tabletop back and his width expends right through to his stifle and he is very wide based. Don't miss him. He scanned equal third fattest in the draft and is suitable for heifers. Queensguard is from a different contemporary of an ET program and recipient herd which was external. While he doesn't have the condition of the other bulls he has been gaining massively. We just love this bull and think he has so much potential. A maternal brother to the $24,000 Newsflash, he offers a unique genetic profile in an athletic, naturally thick package. We know he will breed the house down. He has not had genomics conducted yet. Frame 5.

It all starts with a good muzzle and this paints the picture we see in the rest of the body. Quadrille has a great head in general – Dad always said that a good muzzle and jaw was like eating with a tablespoon as opposed to a teaspoon with corresponding results. Quadrille is deep and soggy with a great set of numbers and a beautiful temperament. Frame 5. Pictured on page 30.

The second youngest bull in the sale and what a cracker he is. Super thick, soft and quiet as they come. Scanned with a whopping 6.2 for IMF, which at his age shows exactly what we are striving to do – and that is have animals that do better on less time and less feed – which will ultimately mean less days on feed. He ranks in the stud worthy combination of EBVs and phenotype. Suitable for heifers. Frame 5.

There are a Quadrillion reasons to use Q112 as a heifer bull as he is agile, lighter and not only less likely to hurt himself but less likely to hurt your heifers. He was born small but still grew out well and has an ideal shape to his neck and shoulder to facilitate an easy calving. Let us take care of the genetics, but 70% of calving ease comes from the environment so make sure you read Stu's article at the back of this catalogue too. Frame 4.5.

ESTABLISHED 1947
13 OCTOBER
DISPERSAL OF G, H, J, K AND L COWS
INCLUDING DONORS
9 SEPTEMBER70 THUMPING
YEARLING BULLS
ESTABLISHED 1947
Well what a humdinger of a couple of years – starting with a mini cyclone, ending with a bushfire and rounding out the centre with the two worst drought years in history. To say that we are simply grateful to still have our cows and grass is a massive understatement and we wish all those still suffering relief soon.
This Spring we will have two sales – 70 bulls at our usual annual Yearling Bull Sale on 9 September, and 120 PTIC cows at our Mature Female Dispersal on 13 October 2020.
Having weaned the bulls down to as young as six weeks we are delighted that they have done so well to present for your inspection for our annual yearling bull sale. Similarly we are wrapt that the cows have powered since the drought ended and it’s a testament to early weaning and their constitution. We know many of you have been waiting patiently for this Mature Cow Sale and we have been flushing accordingly throughout the drought to make it a reality.
On sale will be all of our F, G, H, J, K and L cows including our Donors. They present as Spring and Autumn calvers PTIC to some of the
industry’s hottest bulls including the $160,000 MM Paratrooper, crowd favourite Baldridge Beast Mode, as well as our own $32,000 Ben Nevis Metamorphic, $30,000 Ben Nevis Prime, $28,000 Ben Nevis Propogate and the $24,000 Ben Nevis Newsflash.
We are a fourth generation, family run business that believes strongly in the power of female lines. We value quality and integrity and are offering a unique opportunity to tap directly into our program. Inspections are welcome.

One of the drivers that keeps Anthony Molinia moving is the need to make equity of access to higher education a reality.
“Digital capability is part of equity,” he says. “This is one of the key reasons we’re pursuing innovation. If you have to work while you’re studying because you’re supporting a family, we want to give you the technology you need to learn in your own time.
“In Higher Education we have the opportunity to really make a difference. My mandate is to challenge the status quo. Here, some of our clients are right outside the door. They have views, they’re passionate and they’re here because they want to make a difference. We need to remove constraints and dissolve boundaries so they can grab those opportunities with both hands and help us create a better future.”

LOW STRESS STOCKHANDLINGThe guru out the back working the bulls is our friend and LSS trainer Chook Kealey. Chook grew up on a cattle and farming property in the South Burnett region of Queensland before spending the next eight years training performance horses for a variety of events. North West Queensland was home for the next seven years in a number of roles – from stock camps where helicopter mustering was a weekly occurrence, through to managing large mobs in intensive cell grazing operations. Walcha now home, where he runs sheep and cattle.
A passion for animal psychology got him involved in Low Stress Stock-handling, however it is the amazing impact on people’s lives that gives him the greatest enjoyment now.
Chook Kealey Phone: 0428 418 795 Email: [email protected]
OUR EXPERIENCE WITH CHOOKRecently Chook helped us out by breaking in a 1,100kg rising two year old bull that Hap thought she’d like to take to support the regional shows. The bull as it turned out had better idea’s and jumped out of the 6ft high yards. A total of 12 hours of working with him, Chook not only had him ready for show but went swimming in a river with him and took him to the floor of his shearing shed.
When we did bull video’s and photos Chook was amazing getting groups of bulls to stand and stay at certain parts of a 250 acre paddock so they could act as two separate holding mobs for the photo bulls to walk between. He had those bulls on a string and between working his dog and getting the bulls to stand up perfectly (complete with a smile) we were all gobsmacked.
Quiet cattle and happy people are really important to us. We have all attended the Low Stress Stockhandling Course and while some of us are slow learners (Hap mainly), we have an amazing teacher in Chook Kealey and highly recommend his course.
Attitude is everything

A few factors will combine this year to bring about a rise in calving problems in beef herds. The first is the combination of undersized/drought heifers compared to their calves and the second is the post-drought fresh, green grass.
These together are a recipe for disaster and while most people focus on the genetics of the bull (which is the area we strive to get right for you) did you know that 70% of issues with calving ease come from the environment? The good news is it can be managed.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE TRIMESTERSThe first trimester after she is joined is when she is still actively growing. This is when she needs the best nutrition as it will not only affect her physical size and strength but the set up and development of her uterus and calf. This usually fits with Spring/Summer.
The last trimester is when her nutrition is largely diverted to the calf affecting calf size. Due to the drought many heifers were stunted in their first trimester and have received a flush of feed in their last. This is the first warning sign we may have a harder calving this year than normal.
Nest issue is the fresh, short green grass many will be calving onto. To understand its detrimental effect on calving ease we need to understand the physiological requirements of a heifer pre-calving in regards to nutrition and management.
HOW 'LAZY CALVERS' DEVELOP?Cows and heifers undergo metabolic and physiological changes in the period immediately prior to calving that restrict their capacity to both absorb and mobilise calcium when it is most needed. Muscle function is the key to an easy calving and calcium is vital for the contractile strength of muscles like the uterus (for strong contractions) and the rumen (for energy).
Most females at calving experience some form of calcium deficiency known as Hypocalcaemia, or commonly known as milk fever. At worst it causes downer cows and death but in most beef herds it presents at a sub clinical level as lazy calvers, prolapses, mispresentation (ie breech), infertility due to infections as well as poor colostrums transfer.
Hypocalcaemia also places the cow at risk of ketosis, and reduces her appetite when she most needs to eat to repair herself. All up it’s a triple whammy on calving ease and subsequent production and reproduction.
The reason why we don’t see more cases of milk fever is that cows and heifers are able to mobilise calcium from their bones at this point. The ability of a cow to mobilise calcium at this time is critically dependent on what they are fed 14 – 21 days prior to birth and the key ingredient is Magnesium.
Sadly most traditional pre-calving management strategies are counterproductive, and contribute to, rather than help prevent problems. Most calving supplements have higher levels of Potassium, Nitrogen, Sodium and Calcium (I know I will explain) which all adversely affect the availability of Magnesium. While it seems logical
to feed Calcium if they are deficient in it the reality is that they need to mobilise it from their bones not ingest it for it to work.
WHY GREEN FEED IS THE ENEMYExcess nitrates as well as the higher levels of potassium in fresh, green, short feed or improved, supered pastures also affect the mobilisation of calcium as well as muscle function (remember the uterus and rumen). So while we think we are doing our heifers a favour in that good paddock save it for after they calve. It is a killer.
Other feedstuffs detrimental to magnesium bioavailability and therefore calcium availability can include excessive levels of urea, legume silages and hay, lucerne hay, molasses, and salt. The irony is that many of these things are recommended pre-calving.
Vitamin D also play and important role in determining the rate of the release of calcium from bones.
Lessons for the dairy industry have also taught us that the pH of blood plays a role in calcium release from bones. Many producers, tempted to provide limestone or even causmag pre-calving, may not realise that these can often precipitate an alkalising effect rather than the preferred acidic blood pH. The end result is sub-optimal supply of calcium into the blood stream and weak muscle contractions.
PRACTICAL SOLUTIONSGreat pre calving management recognises both the logic and value of helping dams increase skeletal calcium release at the point of parturition. It will provide not only easier calving but better colostrums transfer, more milk and better re-conception rates as they clean up better.
We understand you need to be practical but it doesn’t take too many saved lives of calves or cows to make this worthwhile. In order of effectiveness (you could just do one or for maximum effect all four) for best results.
1. Between 14 – 21 days pre calve reduce availability to counterproductive feedstuff ie lush green feed, cereal/legume crops.
2. Introduce low nitrogen/potassium fibre feed types such as a rough paddock of old stand pasture. If not available provide cereal or grass hays.
3. Introduce a lick or pellet containing anionic salts and specific forms of magnesium. We use the AIM lead-up lick.
4. Introduce small amounts of condensed energy feeds (eg grains),
For cost effectiveness and management, heifers are best early preg-tested and only fed in calving groups two weeks out from calving. In a cost benefit analysis the benefits far outweigh the costs – more calves born, better growth rates from more milk, better re-conception rates, less heifer deaths and peace of mind.
