American Legion Post 49 - Pequot Lakes, MN

Greetings Everyone! What a busy month we have had! Things kind

of kicked off when we gave a second try at holding a dance in the back hall on Saturday, September 26, with Jimmy’s Country Music Show putting on a terrific evening’s entertainment. The crowd was small, but those that were here all enjoyed it and had a great time. There is more on the dance elsewhere in this issue. We wanted to try it before more of our ‘snowbirds’ left for their winter homes, but we needed more time to advertise it.

On Thursday, October 1, the VA was at our Post from 9-10:30am giving flu shots to all veterans enrolled in the VA Health Care system. It worked out great for me as I wouldn’t have been able to make either of the days they were scheduled to hold the flu shot clinic at the Brainerd CBOC. The turnout would have been much better if we had received more notice of them being here, but I believe there were about 35 veterans receiving shots that morning. The nurses went from here to the Crosslake Legion for an afternoon session. I

haven’t heard how their turnout was. Then on Friday, October 2, when we had the

First Grade Class from Eagleview Elementary in for a Flag Etiquette, Flag Folding, and Flag Disposal session. What a great morning it was! You can read more about that elsewhere in this issue, also. I want to thank Adjutant Kevin Buss for coordinating this terrific Americanism event, which we do every year.

The following night, October 3, we held our annual Early Bird Membership Dinner. Not everyone that had paid up their membership for 2016 took advantage of the free dinner and they missed a very good meal of either chicken or pork roast. I believe we had only one member renew that evening. Carol Harrington did an excellent job preparing dinner and Boy Scout Troop 102 did a fine job helping serve. Our guest speaker was Denise Milton, the 9th District Commander this year. She was our Department Vice-Commander last year and is a candidate for Department Commander for the 2016-17 year. Denise was our Department

Membership Director a couple years back and she gave a very informative talk. We also received information on the latest veterans’ benefits from our Crow Wing County Veterans Service Officer Bob Nelson. It was disappointing that we didn’t have more Legion Family Members in attendance that evening. The Auxiliary had more prizes than we had attendees. Thank you, ladies.

Our October general membership meeting on the 8th was fairly well attended, although we are about to lose more snowbirds in the coming months. If you haven’t been a regular at our monthly general membership meetings, please consider attending. They take less than an hour and a half of your time and you will enjoy the camaraderie and get a chance to provide input into the running of our Post and club. Our next meeting is November 12. We need you there!

Our Monday Burger Night and Tuesday Mexican Night sales are starting to slow down considerably, but we will hold on as long as we can. We are in desperate need of new people to step up and volunteer to work a few nights at the Post to keep these going. Don’t always expect someone else to do it. This is your club, also.

As I write this column we are just heading into

First Vice Commander’s report

Chaplain’s Report Second Vice Commander ReportGRACE BEFORE BREAKFAST

“Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. John 21:12 (NLT)Peter’s thoughts were interrupted by a shout from the shore, “Catch

any fish?” Peter and John looked up. Probably a villager. “No!” they yelled.“Try the other side!” the voice yells back.John looks at Peter. What harm? So out sails the net. Peter wraps the

rope around his wrist to wait. But there is no wait. The rope pulls taut, and the net catches. Peter sets his weight against the side of the boat and begins to bring in the net. He’s so intense with the task, he misses the message. John doesn’t. The moment is déjà vu. This has happened before. The long night. The empty net. The call to cast again. Fish flapping on the floor of the boat. Wait a minute… he lifts his eyes to the man on the shore. “It’s Him,” he whispers.

Then louder, “It’s Jesus.”Peter turns and looks. Jesus, the God of heaven and earth, is on the

shore… and He’s building a fire. Peter plunges into the water, swims to shore, and stumbles out wet and shivering and stands in front of the friend he betrayed. Jesus has prepared a bed of coals. For one of the few moments in his life, Peter is silent. What words would suffice? The moment is too holy for words. God is offering breakfast to the friend who betrayed Him. And Peter is once again finding grace at Galilee.

Jesus is inviting you to breakfast, no - more than that, He is inviting you to receive His gift of eternal life. “For God so loved the world (YOU) that He gave His only Son that whosoever (if you) believe in Him, He would give YOU eternal life.” John 3:16

Happy fall to all!

It’s October 15th and here I am again writing my report at the last minute to make deadline. It’s kind of tough for me to think of what to say sometimes.... It’s still the middle of October and this report is for the November issue. I don’t have a very reliable crystal ball so I can’t really tell you what will happen the rest of this month!

Halloween hasn’t been here yet, but do you want to hear a spooky story? “500+ ravenous hungry and thirsty Legionnaires converge on Ben Krueger Post 49!” Just kidding!! We love you guys and are very proud to have the honor of hosting another American Legion Fall Conference! We have been blessed with this honor happening on October 22-24. I guess I can report on the outcome in the December issue.

It has recently been brought to my attention that we have some beautiful new wall lights in the back hall for all of our ‘esteemed guests’ to enjoy. I believe this came about thanks to our good friends and members, Larry and Dave, once again. I think they have left by now so I’d like to say, MISS YOU GUYS!

Once again I want to give a great big thanks and sincere appreciation to everybody who works so hard to make great things happen here. We are very fortunate to have members, volunteers, and staff that are so dedicated to our Post.

I haven’t had much time to spend at the Post, but from my observation when I go by, it looks like our special days have still been doing good: Burger Nite, Taco Tuesday, and Bar Bingo. Vikings games are always a blast here, but last week was a bye week so I finally had the chance to fool a trout. I made the mistake of taking a trout hog with me and he ended up getting bloodier. The pig (who I won’t name) out fished me! What are you doing this weekend, Randy?

Well, it’s getting late and I still have to get cleaned up before I bring this in and enjoy my favorite night – $2 beer night!

I almost forgot, Thanksgiving is coming up and I think I need a good hiding place. One of the guys I work with said I was a turkey!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Remember to give thanks to those who have served and those who are still serving. There are many who won’t be home for the holidays.

God Bless all of them!~Rev. Rick Arrigoni

POW/MIA uPdATEArmy Sgt. 1st Class Robert Reager, 20,

of Coraopolis, Penn., was buried Sept. 28, in Bridgeville, Penn. On Dec. 1, 1950, Reager was assigned to Company C, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 31st Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 7th Infantry Division. The 31st RCT was deployed east of the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea, when it was engaged by overwhelming numbers of Chinese forces. In late November 1950, remnants of the 31st RCT, known historically as Task Force Faith, began a fighting withdrawal to more defensible positions near Hagaru-ri, south of the reservoir. On Dec. 2, 1950, Reager was reported as missing in action.

In 1953, as part of a prisoner of war exchange, returning American soldiers who had been held as prisoners of war reported that Reager was not among the many men captured and held as prisoners. When no further information pertaining to Reager was provided, a military review board later amended Reager’s status to deceased.

From April 28 through May 10, 2004, a joint U.S./Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea excavated several secondary burial sites in the vicinity of the Pungnyu-ri inlet of the Chosin Reservoir, and recovered remains of possible U.S. servicemen who fought during the battles at the reservoir.

To identify Reager’s remains, scientists from DPAA and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) used circumstantial evidence and two forms of DNA analysis including; mitochondrial DNA, which matched his brother and two cousins, and Y-chromosome Short Tandem

Repeat DNA (Y-STR) analysis, which matched his brother.

Today, more than 7,800 Americans remain unaccounted for from the Korean War. Using advances in technology, identifications continue to be made from remains that were previously turned over by North Korean officials or recovered by American teams.

the week for Department Fall Conference and I can only hope that everything is going to go well, as planned. This issue should be available right in the middle of the conference, so some of those attending will be able to take a copy back to their Posts. We do have one of the nicer newsletters in the Minnesota American Legion. We need your help to keep it that way!

We have another huge event right ahead of us, and NO, I’m not talking about the deer opener! I’m talking about VETERANS DAY! Remember that this is the VFW Northern Post 3839’s turn to host this year. They haven’t firmed everything up yet, so keep an eye on the newspaper for the details. You know that it will be scheduled for the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month though, and it will be held at their Post. PLHS Principal Chip Rankin is also planning to have a ceremony at the High School and will invite all veterans to attend. Watch for that information in the newspaper, also. Our Color Guard will be participating.

In signing off for this month I am hopeful that all members of our American Legion Family will join us at our Post, Unit, and Squadron events. Please encourage your non-legion friends to join you at our club activities, also. We need their business to help pay the bills and make a profit. Remind them that our gambling proceeds go right back into their community!

May God bless our Legion Family, our troops, and God Bless America!

– Ken

Hi All! 1st Vice Ken Palmer here...We are here at Fall Conference time and we are hurting this year. We

need help and we need members to pay up so we can be 100%. That would be nice and sweet. We are at 70.9%.

Until next month!

Jimmy’s Country Music showBen Krueger Post #49 closed out September with a BAND! Yes, a

band. Jimmy's Country Music Show – a one-man band. We had such a crowd at the dance following the pig roast that we had to try it again. As it turned out, we needed more time for advertising and getting the word out.

Jimmy put on quite a show! He has a very impressive repertoire.

The crowd was small, but those attending really enjoyed it.Wayne and Bonnie Fyle are a couple that really loves to dance. They dance several times a week when they have the chance.

Two young ladies thoroughly enjoyed dancing, also. The only problem was they had to yield the floor to the older dancers that use the whole floor. The girls moved a little slower and were afraid they might be in the way.

FlAG ETIquETTE/FlAG dISPOSAl ClASS FOR FIRST GRAdERSThe Ben Krueger Post #49 Color Guard held a

Flag Etiquette and Information class for the entire First Grade Class of Eagle View Elementary School on October 2, 2015. They arrived in busses around 9:15am. There were approximately 120 students plus their teachers, teacher aides or helpers and a parent or two. They were divided into 5 groups. They had already watched a DVD called "For Which It Stands" provided by The American Legion at school and then came to the Legion for some actual demonstrations and

hands on experience. They had some questions written down that members of the Color Guard did their best to answer for them. They got to see first hand how the Flag was folded into the triangular 'cocked hat' shape and later had the chance to participate in folding the Flag.

There were five training stations set up around the Post and the five classes rotated from one to the other until they had been through them all. After all had completed the five classes they gathered around

and watched as the Color Guard held a Flag Disposal Ceremony. They watched as the first unserviceable Flags were disposed of by burning, observed the Color Guard fire their rifles and heard "Taps" played. A couple of them volunteered to help hand some Flags off to be disposed.

The morning finished with a lunch of hot dogs, baked beans, potato chips, and an orange drink. All this was capped off with a cup of ice cream! This is a wonderful experience everyone should participate in!.

Kevin Buss leads one of the classes in a review of the video and Flag Etiquette. He demonstrated how the Flag was to be respected and answered many of their questions about the Flag and its history.

Jack Schmidt and Ken Meyer had the pleasure of helping each and every one of them with their hands-on experience of folding the Flag. Each class was divided into small groups of five or six and they rotated around the Flag to the various positions until each got to make two or three folds on the flag. They really enjoyed participating and Jack and Ken were very happy to have the last group finish!
