Q4 Sales: It’s The Stupid Economy As America grapples with a sharp downturn in the economy, the record industry finds itself unfortunately well versed in the art of the down arrow. So as superstar releases and the approaching CMA Awards bring hope for a kick-started holiday selling season, Country Aircheck asked a few label sales execs for an assessment of where the genre stands. As of last week, country album sales are down roughly 18%, compared to an all-genre decline of 12%. And though that disparity can be explained by year-to-year release schedule variations, another troubling trend has emerged. Weekly country sales figures have dipped below 400,000 units for 23 of this year’s 42 weeks, a low only experienced in four previous weeks – all in 2007. The CD, our panel agrees, is sliding toward obsolescence. “In fairness, we experienced a longer tail than other genres,” says UMG/Nashville EVP/Sales, Marketing & New Media Ben Kline. “But finally everyone gets to the finish line, and we’re there.” A troubled economy adds to labels’ fourth quarter uncertainty. Show Dog/Nashville VP/Sales & Marketing Bill Kennedy says he really saw a drop over the summer.

In Concert: Pour Lots Of Sugar Sugarland headlined Lexington’s Rupp Arena over the weekend, and by the end of the night the duo had taken its place among the format’s elite performers. Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush engaged the crowd fully, and there were times when the duo could barely be heard above the crowd’s singing – including album cuts. But don’t take my word, for it. Here’s WDTW/Detroit PD John Trapane’s assessment: “Do you remember when you first saw it? When a rising star became a superstar? When a performer becomes an entertainer? When the audience become worshippers? I’ve seen this three times in my career. The first was in 1992, The Montagne Center in Beaumont, TX when Garth Brooks put 10,000 people in the palm of his hand and took them wherever he wanted to go. I saw it again in 1999 at the Cajundome in Lafayette LA, where the Dixie Chicks were the opening act and the venue was filled to
the rafters when they hit the stage. The third time: Oct. 25, 2008, Rupp Arena – Sugarland. From ‘Love’ to ‘Love Shack,’ artist and audience became one for two hours. “They made sure the crowd was part of the show, handing out glow sticks and bubbles to everyone – the latter for the R.E.M. cover ‘Nightswimming.’ And they realized that the crowd is truly the star of the show, keeping them lit for most of the show. Kristian ran through the crowd to present one lucky fan with a signed guitar, and they had local video footage of local landmarks during the final. And, then there was the 10,000-voice choir on ‘Stay.’ “All these things contribute, but it’s Jennifer and Kristian who blow you away with the unassuming, always smiling way they go about the show. They’re having more fun than the crowd, and it’s infectious.” –L.H.
NY v. PPM: No Quick Exit Arbitron’s effort to stop N.Y. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s lawsuit against the PPM was denied today by federal judge Denise Cote, who ruled in favor of the case being heard in state court. Arbitron commented, “Today’s ruling does not impact [our] right to publish our PPM audience estimates in New York.”

KNTY/Sacramento PD Bob McNeill discusses his most important song, albums or concerts.1. The Beatles, Suffolk Downs, August, 1966: I paid $9.50 for two tickets and stood about 250 feet from the stage. I couldn’t hear anything over the 15,000 screaming girls. The show lasted about a half hour and it changed my life, musically. Nothing has ever compared to that. God, am I dating myself.
2. The Eagles, Richmond, VA, 1973: They were opening for Linda Ronstadt. Yes they were! What a band. I still listen to them…as does just about everybody.3. Aerosmith, “Ragdoll”: This is rock and roll the way I like it – raw and powerful. I listen to Aerosmith before I play golf. It makes me hit the ball really, really hard.4. CSN&Y, “Southern Cross”: I’ve been a sailor all my life and somehow this song reaches out and grabs me. I can’t listen to it and not want to get on a boat and feel the power of the wind.5. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”: I think somebody should do a country cover on this. Seriously, it could work.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: The entire “musical” genre of rap. I’m not a smart man, but music to me always has to have a melody.• A highly regarded musical work you’ve never heard: There are several albums by The Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols and Green Day (except “Time of Your Life”) that I’ve never heard and have no desire to.• An album you listened to incessantly: I just can’t seem to get Jamey Johnson’s That Lonesome Song out of the CD player right now. I don’t think country has had a concept project like this before.

Hot Air The Zac Brown Band’s label limbo may be drawing to a close. Their single “Chicken Fried,” originally released as part of a deal with Live Nation and promoted by Big Picture Entertainment, has since gone top 10 and lost the Live Nation affiliation when the company did an abrupt 180 on its much-publicized “360” artist deals. Now, Country Aircheck is hearing a contract with Atlantic is in the works, with BPE still directing promotion efforts.
Chart Chat Eight isn’t nearly enough for Arista/Nashville VP/Promotion Skip Bishop, Dir./National Promotion Lesly Tyson and their entire Arista team, but they’ll take it as Carrie Underwood’s “Just A Dream” becomes her eighth consecutive No. 1 single. She’s never had a single that didn’t crack the top of the chart, proving that in her case, apparently you can win them all.
Hall Chairman Roger Murrah, Matraca Berg, John Hiatt and Tom Shapiro.
Joey & Rory The Life Of A Song (Vanguard/Sugar Hill/Nine North) CMT Can You Duet contestants Joey Martin and Rory Feek wrote or co-wrote seven of 12 songs on their debut album, including the single “Cheater Cheater.” The husband-wife team also had a hand in “Play The Song,” “Tonight Cowboy You’re Mine” and “Rodeo.” They didn’t write, obviously, the waltz
version of “Free Bird” they first played on the show that launched their career as a duo.
Toby Keith That Don’t Make Me A Bad Guy (Show Dog) As he did with last year’s Big Dog Daddy, Keith produced and contributed the bulk of the songs. Eight of 11 were co-written with Bobby Pinson, Eddy Raven teamed with Keith on “Cabo San Lucas” and Vicky McGehee helped pen Keith’s next single “God Love Her.” And Keith wrote “Missing Me Some You” from a forward operating base in
Afghanistan during one of his USO tours.
Reba McEntire 50 Greatest Hits (MCA/UMe) This three-disc boxed set spans McEntire’s MCA days, starting with “How Blue” and concluding with the Kelly Clarkson duet “Because Of You.” Tracks include “Whoever’s In New England,” “Fancy,” “Is There Life Out There” and “How Was I To Know.”

Q4 Sales (continued from page 1)“When gas prices shot up followed by the market going down, it really became difficult to get out of the [300,000 units-per-week range],” he says. “Our fans just don’t have a lot of extra disposable income. The comments I’ve seen coming out of Wal-Mart are that their customers are running out of money four, five
or six days before they get paid.” The idea that entertainment won’t be as affected as other sectors of the economy doesn’t find much play with Kline, though he’s hopeful about the holidays. “I don’t necessarily believe in the recession-proof argument,” he says. “But from what I’ve heard, the under $25 and under $10 gift is very important for both retailers and consumers this season. The value proposition music delivers has the opportunity to be highlighted again.” Kennedy sees another indication of compressed check books in a relatively new imbalance between digital track sales and album sales. “Last year, if a project sold 10,000 albums in a week you’d see 8,000 to 10,000 track sales as well,” he says. “Now, projects that are hitting that level of track sales are only selling 2,000 albums. To me, that’s the economy. People will buy the new single they like, but they just can’t commit to that full album purchase.” But it’s the big album releases, including last week’s No. 1 debut from Kenny Chesney and upcoming albums from Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift, that need to lead the Q4 charge. Lyric Street VP/Marketing, Sales & Media Greg McCarn admits, “Big records come along and change things a lot, but we don’t know what to expect,” he says. “You have to assume with any new release that the trend will be down from previous numbers. The hope is that music becomes an attractive gift as people move away from bigger ticket items.”
This week we continue our roundup of Summer Arbitron results. As part of our weekly market-by-market offerings, with a few exceptions, only stations achieving at least a 1.0 share are included. PPM markets are not included. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator and an “t” indicates a tie.
