ABOUT BEN ALLISON

The Ben Allison Band is: Ben Allison, bass; Steve Cardenas, guitar; Bran-

don Seabrook, guitar and banjo; Rudy Royston, drums.

Known for his inspired arrangements, inventive grooves and hummable

melodies, Allison draws from the jazz tradition and a range of influences from

rock and folk to 20th-century classical and world music traditions, seamlessly

blending them into a cinematic, cohesive whole. With his groups The Ben Allison

Band, Man Size Safe, Peace Pipe, and Medicine Wheel, Ben has toured extensively

throughout North America, Europe, and Brazil, winning fans and building new au-

diences with an adventurous yet accessible sound and a flair for the unexpected.

Recent performance highlights include Carnegie Hall (New York City), Teatro Man-

zoni (Milan, Italy), Central Park’s Summer Stage (New York City), Auditório Ibi-

rapuera (Sao Paulo, Brazil), The Capitol Theater (Salt Lake City) and Queen Eliza-

beth Hall (London).

Called “one of today’s best young jazz musicians” by the Boston Globe

and a “visionary composer, adventurous improviser, and strong organizational

force on the New York City jazz scene” by JazzTimes, Allison has released 10 al-

bums, all of which showcase his forward-thinking vision as a bassist, composer,

arranger, producer and mixing engineer, as well as his hands-on approach to his

craft. His most recent album, Action-Refraction, reached No. 1 on the CMJ na-

tional jazz radio charts and remained in the top 20 for more than three months,

making it one of the most-played CDs of 2011. Action-Refraction was named one

of the Best Albums of 2011 (of any genre) by NPR and Time Out New York. His

previous six albums also climbed to the top spot on U.S. radio, garnering eight

SESAC National Performance Awards. His albums have consistently been named

as among the best of the year by publications such as Billboard, The New York

Times, The Boston Globe, Jazz Times, Downbeat Critics Poll, Coda (Canada), Jazzit

(Italy) and Jazz Review (UK), among many others.

ABOUT LEE SHAW

Shaw has had her own acoustic jazz piano trio for more than 40 years,

during which time she performed in numerous clubs, concerts and festivals

throughout the United States and Europe. Out of her laser-like musical inten-

sity comes a true mastery of the piano, and her tonal palette is huge. Bill

Milkowski in Jazz Times notes, “her harmonic language is expansive, her time

impeccable, her touch divine.” In 1993 she was inducted into the Oklahoma

Jazz Hall of Fame.

The Lee Shaw Trio – Shaw on piano, Rich Syracuse on bass and Jeff

Siegel on drums – has appeared at the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival at the

Kennedy Center in Washington and performances throughout New York in-

cluding the Wall Street Jazz Festival, two appearances at the Lake George Jazz

Festival and a CD release concert in the Massry Center for the Arts. Shaw also

has appeared on Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz” program, and NPR hailed

her, along with McPartland and the late Mary Lou Williams, as “one of jazz’s

premier pianists.” In 2007, the trio embarked on its tour of Austria, Switzerland

and Germany. One of the Austrian concerts was recorded by the Austrian

Broadcast Company and became the centerpiece of their 2008 CD/DVD Live in

Graz. The trio’s most recent CD Blossom was released in June 2009. Shaw has

taught at Saint Rose since 1983 and also instructs privately. An ardently pas-

sionate teacher, Shaw states, “So many jazz musicians have been so generous

to me in the past. The only way I can truly thank them is to pass on to my stu-

dents what I learned from them.”
