THINGS TO KNOW...THE GAMEThe boys of fall are back for the Bemidji State University football program as the squad takes on Northern State University in the 2018 season opener Thursday night at Chet Anderson Stadium. The Beavers and Wolves have been near the top of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division standings for thepastfewseasonsandwillmeetintheseasonopenerforthefirsttimeintheseries history.
THE SERIESBemidji State has extended its series lead over Northern State, thanks to three straight wins in the last three seasons, to now hold a series record of 21-19-1. The BSU/NSU series began Sept. 27, 1957 in Bemidji, Minn., while the Wolves won the game, 14-13. Bemidji State is 14-4 against Northern State since 2000 and won its most recent matchup, 44-17, in Aberdeen, S.D. Head Coach Brent Bolte, in his third season as BSU’s head coach, is 17-6 since taking the reins of the program. His 17 wins since 2016 are the most for anyBSUheadcoachintheirfirsttwoseasons.BoltehashelpedtheBeaverstofinishamongthe topfive inscoringoffenseanddefenseoverhisfirst twoseasons as head coach.
THE TEAMSBemidji State: One of the most consistent positions for BSU over the past three seasons has become vacant. Junior Jared Henning and redshirt freshman BrandonAltarebothpoisedtofillintheroleofstartingquarterbackforoneofthe NSIC’s top three scoring offenses over the past two seasons. In total, the Beaverswillfilltheshoesof11graduatedstartersamongoffenseanddefense.A select group of team captains will be the backbone of the team throughout the season, including senior running back Andrew Lackowski, senior safety John Vogeler, junior defensive back Michael Junker and junior offensive tackle Joe Woods. The changes felt this season will include the team’s offensive and defen-sive coordinator positions, which became vacant after the 2017 season. Defen-sivecoordinatorJamieBischentershisfirstseasonatthepositionwiththeBea-vers, while co-offensive coordinator Karson Pike returns to the coaching staff after serving as a graduate assistant from 2010-11. Co-offensive coordinator Ryan Olson was promoted to the position after serving as the team’s offensive line coach and running game coordinator. Lackowski is the offense’s most productive yardage producer returning after ranking third in the NSIC with 87.2 rush yards per game and sixth with 109.6totalyardspergame.Hefinishedwith959rushingyards,247receivingyards and nine total touchdowns for the Beavers. Junior wide receivers Jake AndersonandBlairVanEsseachledBSUthroughtheairwithfivereceivingtouchdowns and each averaged at least 16.3 yards per reception. The defensive backfield of the “GangGreen” is set to terrorize oppos-ing quarterbacks all season with the return of 2018 D2Football Preseason All-American Gunner Olszewski and 2017 D2CCA Football All-Super Region Four First Teamer John Vogeler. Vogeler totaled five interceptions a season ago, returning three for touchdowns. Olszewski is 10 solo tackles and 393 punt re-turn yards shy of the Beaver Football all-time records. The front seven of the defense will see plenty of change except for returning all-conference linebacker Gabe Ames, who recorded 40 tackles, including 23 solo, with 5.0 tackles for a lossand3.0sacksinfivestartslastseason.
Northern State: The Northern State football team is coming off their third straight 6-5 season in 2017. They return one NSIC All-Conference performer in Noah MacPherson. NSU seniors MacPherson and sophomore wide receiver Zech Culbreath were picked as the NSU Players to Watch in the 2018 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Wolves bring the conference’s 10th ranked de-fense and 12th ranked offense in total yards from last season into 2018. NSU finished10thinbothscoringoffenseanddefenselastseasonaswell.
