Corner Director’s Notes of Affection While modern advertisements often insist that no Valentine’s Day gift is complete without chocolate, flowers and expensive jewelry, centuries of tradition show that a sweet card is all you need to say “I love you” on Feb. 14. By the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day was firmly established as a romantic holiday, and sweethearts often expressed their feelings by reciting or singing verses of love. The oldest known written valentine greeting is a 1415 poem by Charles, Duke of Orleans, who wrote to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London. Valentines in the form of letters and poetry became common throughout Western Europe. People began adding lace borders and images of hearts, flowers and Cupid to handwritten valentines, and by the Victorian Era, valentines had become elaborate art pieces, featuring ornamental folds, “pop-up” images, and embellishments of real lace and ribbons. Factory-produced valentines and cheaper postage rates allowed people of all social ranks to exchange cards with their loved ones. In the late 1840s, Esther Howland introduced Victorian-style valentines to America after being inspired by a card she received from England. She organized an assembly line of family and friends to make intricately decorated valentines, earning $5,000 her first year in business. Known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” Howland paved the way for greeting card companies of the future. Mike Amici, Executive Director

Wetransformed our hallway into aChristmas wonderland by giftwrapping all of the doors.Residents, staff and familiesgathered around the Christmastree decorated with handmadeornaments throughout the entireseason. We also enjoyed multipleChristmas parties with liveentertainment (including a reallycool saxophone performance byone of our family members!) anda fun Champagne toast andBalloon Drop to ring in the NewYear. Cold Weather ClothingThrough the years, people have

relied on more than just hats, scarves and gloves to protectthemselves from winter winds. Here’s a look at somefrigid-weather fashion from thepast and present:

Cloaks. Cloaks fell out offashion in the early 1900s as coatsgained popularity. However, forcenturies a cloak was the way tostay warm in the winter, andcould even double as a pillow orblanket on a long journey.

Muffs. Popular for both menand women from the 1500s to thelate 1800s, fur or silk muffshelped hands stay warm andcould hold small items—evendogs! Muffs regained popularityin the early 20th century andagain during World War II, butpurses eventually won out as thehandier accessory.

Ushanka hats. Russians haveworn fur hats for centuries, andthe iconic design with the ear flapsbecame standard issue for Russiansoldiers in 1940. The practicalstyle remains popular today withmilitary units and civilians aroundthe world.

Fleece. The introduction ofpolar fleece in the 1970s was arevolution in winter wear, as thelightweight, synthetic fabric waswarm, comfortable and durable.Nowadays, fleece is used in coats, sweaters, pants, socks andblankets.

Health

Hypothyroidism—also calledunderactive thyroid—is the most

common thyroid disorder. Ithappens when your thyroid glanddoesn’t produce enough thyroid

hormone, which is essentialbecause thyroid hormone helps

regulate important bodyprocesses, such as your

metabolism. But with low thyroidfunction, these body processes

slow down.The prevalence of thyroid

disorders increases with age andnumerous morphological andphysiological changes of the

thyroid gland during the processof aging are well-known. It is to bestressed that the clinical course of

thyroid diseases in the elderlydiffers essentially from that

observed in younger individuals, because symptoms are more

subtle and are often attributed tonormal aging.

Key hypothyroidism symptomsinclude constipation, depression,
