NEIL BUTLER | Senior, Entrepreneurship | Knoxville, TNTo be entirely honest, I applied to Belmont on a whim, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. The community of love and grace that exists at Belmont has allowed me to grow so much as an individual and to also grow incredibly close to God. Through serving new students alongside the rest of the 2015 OC, I hope to extend to others the care and love that has been poured into me by friends, family and the Lord. Also, I am a Pokémon master. Let’s chat.

JASON CLARK | Junior, Music Business | Tulsa, OKMy whole life I thought I was going to go to Oklahoma University. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I found out about Belmont. When I toured Belmont and got to see the community, I knew it was where I was supposed to be. I found my home here at Belmont and within the TT community. I am proud to be able to serve on the 2015 OC and be able to help new students find their home here, too.

MIKAELA CLARK | Junior, Public Relations | St. Louis, MOI am from a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri and a proud Cards baseball fan! My desire to attend Belmont stemmed from my passion for music, like so many other students here. But I also knew I wanted to be a part of an academic community that could provide more than just musical instruction. The immense sense of community is what I love about Belmont, whether it be through TT, Bruin Recruiters or now the 2015 OC, I always feel that I am a part of a family.

LAUREN DEKLEVA | Senior, Social Entrepreneurship | Albuquerque, NMWhen I first visited Belmont in February of my senior year, I knew this was the place for me. Belmont is full of life and opportunity, and has given me the chance to explore and develop my variety of passions, from faith to social justice to music to service. I also have made many deep and lasting friendships that have centered me and made this community my home. I am excited and honored to serve on the 2015 OC and look forward to helping new students begin their journeys at Belmont.

ZOE DOLLMAN | Senior, International Business | Yorkville, ILI grew up in a small town west of Chicago. I never really knew where I wanted to go to school; I just knew that I wanted to experience a new place with new people. I fell in love with Belmont when I visited and never looked back. I have been lucky enough to get involved in the Belmont community through student organizations, Intramurals and Towering Traditions. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the 2015 OC and help incoming students find their home in the Belmont community.

Belmont University’s Towering Traditions New Student

Orientation programs are planned and facilitated by a

dedicated group of students called the Orientation Council.

This group shares a desire to serve your transition into

the Belmont community. During the year they plan all the

orientation programs you will experience at Belmont.

We encourage you to take a moment and meet the 2015

Towering Traditions (TT) Orientation Council.

BRIANNA FISCHETTE | Senior, Religious Studies | Westlake Village, CAI come from the other side of the country and have slowly meandered my way over here to Nashville, Tennessee! I transferred to Belmont without ever visiting the campus and when I got here, I knew this was where God needed me to be. Every single day has been a confirmation of that last minute decision to transfer here. My passion is serving students and connecting each individual to the university’s community. Welcome to Belmont!

TREVOR MCCONNELL | Senior, Entertainment Industry Studies | Cumming, GA I’m from a suburb of Atlanta and grew up loving Belmont. It was always my dream to come to a university with amazing musical talent and athletic teams. I’ve found my home at Belmont through Greek Life, athletics and the TT community. Basically, if it has to do with Belmont or happens on this campus, I love it. Welcome to Belmont and welcome to the family.

ZACK MIDDLETON | Junior, Music Business | Cincinnati, OHI visited Belmont for the first time my junior year of high school and fell in love immediately. The passion for this place that was embedded in the students, faculty and staff is something unique I didn’t find on any other campus. That same enthusiasm was instilled in me immediately when I arrived here. I am so honored to have been selected for the 2015 OC and I cannot wait to fill the new students with the same spirit for this wonderful place.

ANTHONY J. O’KRUEG-WRIGHT | Sophomore, Music Business | Oshkosh, WII knew that I wanted to go to college far from home when I realized that there were other places in the world that offered more opportunities. I visited Belmont just once the spring before I entered, but when I arrived in August I felt at home right away. The Orientation Council made me feel welcome and that I had made the right the right decision to attend Belmont. I can’t wait to help new students make that same discovery!

JEFF ROBBEN | Senior, Accounting & Finance | St. Louis, MOGrowing up in St. Louis, I always knew I wanted to get away from everyone and everything to which I’d been accustomed. I found out about Belmont through a friend who was also applying here. I applied before visiting and the visit to campus sealed the deal for me. I slowly found my place on campus after getting past the whole “I don’t do music and everyone else does.” During my time here, I have been able to get involved in TT, intramural sports and Greek life on campus. I am excited to join the 2015 OC in welcoming all the new students to Belmont’s community and helping them find their place here.

Consistently named the highlight of the parents’ Foundation program, faculty member Dane Anthony delivers an interactive session identifying the transitional issues students face entering college. Dane believes having an understanding of how relationships transition from high school to college is one of the keys to a successful college experience for students and parents, particularly during the course of the first academic year.

> Your goal. Get your degree!

> The way you achieve that goal. Develop a comprehensive plan.

> What does a plan include? Your degree plan, your co-curricular activities plan and management of your life.

> Who will help you develop and enact your plan? Your advisor, your GPS, your student life staff and all of Belmont’s faculty and staff!

> Who is responsible for this plan? You!

Page 21: Belmont University Orientation Booklet

TOWERING TRADITIONS 2015 | 19

Academic AdvisingRemember that YOU are responsible for your degree program but you complete that responsibility by using all of the resources available to you. One of your PRIMARY resources is your ACADEMIC ADVISOR.

Advising is a complex relationship that can take many forms. Some advisors depend on the student to know the degree requirements and want to focus on the mentoring relationship. However, other advisors focus on ensuring that you are taking every opportunity to learn and grow. If you find your advisor has a different definition of the relationship than you desire, talk to him/her about it or find someone with whom you develop that special bond.

Your advisor has information and experience that may not be available from other sources. Her or she can advise as to the best semester to take certain courses or of opportunities beyond the classroom that can be critical to your success.

Topics to Discuss with Your Advisor> Classes and/or experiences you really want to have while in college: It could

be Study Abroad or internships; it might be faculty assisted research or leadership opportunities on campus.

> Talk about your academic background: What have been areas of strength for you? Do you have any academic concerns? Are there things about college courses that absolutely frighten you?

> Plans for your future: If your advisor knows where you want to go then s/he can help you identify ways to achieve those goals.

It is important to remember you have four years. You will grow and change in significant ways! Compare the person you were as a high school freshman and who you are today—now multiply that change by at least 10-fold. Make plans but ALWAYS BE OPEN TO OPTIONS. Just be deliberate about the options.

This is why The Office of Residence Life at Belmont University has set up the online “Marketplace” for you.

It’s a place for you to purchase commonly-used items for your new living space that are guaranteed to meet university guidelines, which saves you the hassle of finding the right products on your own.

And the best part is that your purchases will be delivered and waiting in your room on Move-In Day when you arrive! This means you have more room to pack that guitar or those shoes, fewer items to move in and fewer last-minute trips to the store.

FRESHMEN KIVA INITIATIVEBelmont believes that God has equipped each of us with certain resources—including time, talents and finances—and has entrusted

us to use them in service to others. We’ve designed the Freshmen Kiva Initiative so that each freshman can see how even just $25 can transform the life of someone in our global community through micro-lending on Kiva.org. We’re convinced that this meaningful experience in stewardship will open your eyes to ways you might bring other resources to bear on the world’s needs. Belmont will provide you with a $25 gift code to use on Kiva.org—no strings attached. Redeem your $25 gift code before you return to Belmont in August and share how you’ve impacted the world with your classmates and faculty. Watch your Belmont email for your $25 gift code.
