1-5 Measuring in Metric Units

1971—Department of Commerce recommended the U.S. convert to metric

Today—90% of world nations use metric system

A decimal system based on the number 10 All measurements are multiples of 10 Standard rules for amounts of units through

the use of prefixes Units of measure have specific names

Length: 1 meter is a little longer than 1 yard or 3

feet or doorknob to floor. It is about half the height of a very tall adult.

1 Kilometer is about 11 football fields 1centimeter is nearly the diameter of a

dime, a little less than half an inch, or the width of your finger.

A millimeter is about the thickness of a dime.

Page 9: Bellringer. Go over homework Textbook page 22, problem 12-20 even show all your work Practice sheet 1-4 evens only.

Capacity 1 liter is a little more than 1 quart. One teaspoon or a small spoon equals

about 5 milliliters.

Page 10: Bellringer. Go over homework Textbook page 22, problem 12-20 even show all your work Practice sheet 1-4 evens only.

Mass 1 milligram is about the mass of a mosquito 1 gram is about the mass of a paper clip. 1kilogram is about the mass of a liter of

water or the mass of a bunch of bananas.

How to remember different lengths in the metric system: When you think of a millimeter (mm) think

of:◦ The thickness of a dime.

When you think of a centimeter (cm) think of:◦ The width of your pinky.

How to remember different lengths in the metric system: When you think of a meter (m) think of:

◦ The height of the doorknob.

When you think of a kilometer (km) think of:◦ A little more than half of a mile

How to remember different volumes in the metric system: When you think of a liter (L) think of:

◦ About the size of a bottle of water.

When you think of 5 milliliters (mL) think of:◦ One teaspoon

When you think of 2 kiloliters (kL) think of:◦ A hot tub

The “Trick” for converting using “King Henry”

Start at the prefix of the unit you are starting with and count the times you move to get to the prefix you are converting to. Do not count the unit you started with. Move the decimal that

many places and in the direction you counted (right or left).

Example: 5m = 500 cm The decimal was moved two times to the right from the base unit of meter to cm.

Kilo- 1000 (Thousand)        Hecto- 100 (Hundred)               Deka- 10 (Ten)                          Base – 1 (One)                                Deci- 0.1 (Tenths)                                        Centi- 0.01 (Hundredths)                                                          Milli-  0.001 (Thousandths)

Change 245mL to L◦ It takes 1,000 mL to equal 1L, so times 245 by .001

to change to liters ◦ 24ml x 0.001 = 0.245 L

Change 1.4g to mg◦ It takes 1,000 mg to equal 1g, so times 1.4 by 1000

to get mg◦ 1.4g x 1000 = 1,400mg

Change 34L to mL◦ It takes 1,000 mL to equal 1L, so times 24 by 1000

to get mg◦ 34L x 1000 = 34,000mL

Change 4,690g to kg◦ It takes 1,000g to equal 1kg, so times by .001◦ 4690g x .0001 = 4.690kg

1 meter is a little longer than 1 yard or 3 feet.

A millimeter is about the thickness of a dime.

The Length of the Matter 26MAT/TAP 2003-2004

The standard unit of length in themetric system is the meter.

The numbers on a meter stick are called

centimeters. The 10 lines between centimeter numbers are called millimeters.

There are 100 centimeters and 1000 millimeters in a meter.

10 millimeters = 1 centimeter

The Length of the Matter 27MAT/TAP 2003-2004

The meter is based on multiples of 10. Each millimeter is a tenth of a centimeter. For example:

the length of the red line is 7.5 or seven and five tenths

centimeters.

The Length of the Matter 29MAT/TAP 2003-2004

The standard unit of length in the metric system is the meter

Other units of length and their equivalents in meters are as

follows: 1 millimeter = 0.001 meter1 centimeter = 0.01 meter1 decimeter = 0.1 meter

1 kilometer = 1000 meters We abbreviate these lengths as follows:

1 millimeter = 1 mm1 centimeter = 1 cm

1 meter = 1 m1 decimeter = 1 dm1 kilometer = 1 km
