There are many different kinds of hair, so how you style your hair depends on the texture, length, and the style you want. The easiest way to style your hair is to simply embrace its natural tendencies to the fullest level. For us girls our hair and makeup always have to look good before we can leave our homes. Here are some easy methods to style your hair according to what type of hair you have. No matter what kind of hair style or cut you have you can still do something really cool with it. As for me I have a totally different texture of hair, my hair is very thick, it gets tangled and the length of it makes it even harder to deal with. When in need of quick style for my hair, I usually get a wash then straight-en my hair so that it can be soft.

Beauty Through the Years

Carolyn Schmidt What is one significant trademark women have mastered throughout history? Beauty: specifically hair and makeup. Women have been inspired through the ages by movie stars, nature, animals, and other various things. Although the idea of ‘beauty’ has changed from long to short hair, dramatic eyes to bold lips, one thing has remained the same: women will ex-press themselves through their beauty.

1920s This decade abandoned the previously popular traditional constraints of Victorian life. The 20s saw a short, bobbed style that signified the independent women of that decade. The makeup reflected what was seen in the movies: powder and red lips.

1930swomen began to wear their hair slightly longer and more feminine. This decade marked the beginning of the ‘Hollywood Golden Age’ which saw a softer and more glamor-ous hairstyles.

1940-1950 women continued to follow their on-screen idols. Hair was let loose on shoulders in soft waves. In the 50s, the women begin to work back home, away from war effort, and back to household duties; however, they wanted to be in style while going about their household lives. Women began visiting salons on a weekly basis and used more heat and hair-spray. Makeup also became more dramatic emphasizing eye-brows and eyes with mascara, eyeliner, and colored lips to ul-timately highlight a pale complexion.

1960s saw complex hairstyles. Women began to get more jobs in the workplace instead of household duties. They needed hairstyles to accommodate their lives. Most

women put hair in pulled-back or ponytail looks. Makeup was kept simple, focusing on natural beauty.

1970 Long, free, and natural best describes hair in the 70s. The use of products was limited as women con-tinued to embrace the natural look. Long hair was popu-lar during this time with women reflecting their inner free spirit in their hairstyle.

1980 During the 80s, even less constraints of styles and trends emerged. Two paths developed: the classic women and the free spirits. The classic women, following their name, stuck to classic styles with groomed hairstyles usually of a long bob. The free spirited women followed unconventional off-color hair to match their clothing.

1990s saw various styles inspired by starlets. The ‘Rachel’ cut was a longer, shoulder length cut that had long bangs framing the face and a grown out fringe. Meg Ryan also inspired a short, choppy style. Current hairstyles are inspired by classic looks from past decades and from movie stars. Short hair is coming back in with many women liking the bob and shoulder length cut. Styles also depend on the lifestyle of the wom-an and what works best for her everyday life.

Bare Minerals blush applies well; however, NYX blush is more readily available to con-sumers and provides the same look that customers want in their blush.

Rimmel lipsticks compared to Clinique provide the same va-riety of colors. Both brands come off in a dark full coloring, though Rimmel products aren’t needed to be reapplied as often. Richness and coloring giving lit-tle to no distinct differences.

Bare Minerals mascara is a very nice mascara and May-belline Pumped UP gives the same effect to your lashes as Bare Minerals. Maybelline is more reasonable and lasts just as long as Bare Minerals.

Whether it’s a tone defining foundation or a mascara that will double your eyelashes volume, both high end companies as well as the more af-fordable businesses are coming out with the new and hottest products. For majority of people in the working world, it’s unrealistic to purchase a foundation for $49. Companies like Maybelline, Cover girl, L’Oreal, and NYX are providing a cheaper alternative that are often identical to the more expensive high end product. Providing the “working girl” with the same options just at a more affordable price. Whether you’re willing to pay for the real deal, or looking to buy the drug store mockup the prod-ucts are going to provide the same satisfaction. Below are a few compa-rable products that can save you a few bucks, without making your face suffer in return.

Shifting Your Look from Day to NightCarolyn Schmidt

Shifting your look from day to night is hard in itself. Not to mention, af-ter a long day at the office, the makeup you applied before work needs freshening up before your eventful evening. We’ve come up with two easy makeup looks for the day that can be transformed into a bold nightime look.

Starting out the day with a soft color on your lips is great. The soft color looks good for a daytime look but isn’t ‘too much’ for a day at the office.

A red lip brings more at-tention to your face and is more appropiate for a night out.

Light eyeliner and mas-cara is a good way to go for a during the day look.

Thicker eyeliner and mascara will draw atten-tion to your eyes for a nighttime look.

If you are a first time makeup buyer you have to be cautious with finding the right shade to suit your skin tone. When searching for a foundation you want to consider you skin tone first. Women with fair skin tone should choose lighter foundation as a makeup choice. Women with darker skin should find a darker shade foun-dation. Make up colors change with fashion styles and season. The latest new color may or may not be right for you. You do not ever want to go out with the wrong shade or makeup on your face it would just look off and completely bad on you. Makeup is very fun and it can change how you look and do many cool things. The new trend in makeup now is how to contour your makeup. The process of contouring can take a long time because you applying one or more shades of make, one is called the concealer. The concealer is always the lighter one which is used to cover facial blemishes and dark cir-cles under you the eyes, also is mostly about enhancing your cheek-bones, slimming your face and tricking the eye in a convincing way. Laying different textures can cause a cake-on conclusion.1. Always wash your face before applying any make on to it so you can feel fresh. 2. Apply a moisturizer that is good for your skin type.-That’s if you have dry or sensitive skin, oily and normal Skin.3. Use the primer before applying the makeup-adding this will make your makeup last longer you. or4. Put your foundation on your face. 5. O ur cover girl for this month is Corien Shaw. She came into the studio for a personal interview to share her beauty secrets with us. Corien came into the studio with all her makeup and

Bella: So tell us what made you originally get into makeup?Corien: Well, I’ve worn makeup since elementary school. I always liked to be different from everyone else. So everyday I wore a different color glitter on my eyes and I loved the atten-tion it got from everyone! Now that I look back at it they werer probalby all thinking I was crazy but I don’t care. I was expressing myself. Once I got introduced to YouTube I was real-ly inspired by Michelle Phan.

B: What are your favorite brands of makeup to use?C: My favorite primers are from Two Faced and Smashbox. My favorite foundations would be from Tart and Bare Minerals. My favorite recent eyeshadow palettes are the Kat Von D Monarch Palette and the Anastasia Beverly Hills Amrezy Palettte. My favorite blushes and highlighters are from Narz. My favorite brushes are from BH Cosmetics and Real Tech-niques.

B: Are you thinking about making this a career?C: Definitely making this a career! I eventually want to start a business and to start a busi-ness adn hire a few other girls to do makeup for prom and homecoming event parties but that may take some time. I eventually want to move to weddings, then hopefully celebrities! My goal is to be Lady Gaga’s makeup artist!

B: Wow! So what are your plans after you graduate high school? Are you planning on moving to a bigger city?C: Heck yes! California is where most of the beauty conventions and events I’d die to attend take place there. That’s also where most of the artist I love are.

B:Who are some of the artists you like?C: Nicole Guerriero whom I actually got to meet in California and cried my eyes out! I also like Jaclyn Hill, Madeyewlookbylex, Carli Bybel, AMrezy, Shanxo, and Desi Perkins.

B: What did you do on your trip to California? C: I went there the summer before last, and there was a beauty convention called Generation Beauty started by Michelle Phan. I got to see her and a lot of other artists speak and there was lots of free makeup and beauty products from all companies. It was fantastic!

We loved having Corien Shaw, hopefully when you hear of her she’ll be styling celebrities and doing what she loves.

I look back at it, and they were probably all thinking I was crazy but I don’t care, I was expressing myself

Q: How do I know what type of product is best to use for my hair?

A: Products can vary in types, some companies make a product with differ-ent formulas to fit each hair type. Typi-cally people with thin hair are better us-ing products that are lighter in volume to avoid oily hair. People with thicker hair are better using products that have a richer substance that will help control

all of their hair from top to bottom.

Q: What’s the best way to keep my makeup fresh throughout the day for dry skin?

A: For dry skin, using a moisturizer after washing your face or showering, as well as using a foundation primer for dry skin before applying makeup can help stop your face from becoming dry and irritated. Nothing is worse for your face than applying makeup to dry skin. Using one or both of these techniques can get rid of dry skin as well as prevent any further irritation.

Q: What does it mean to highlight and contour your face?

A: Highlighting is a technique meant to draw attention and pull focus to certain points of your face. It gives off a more lit appearance to your face making it look as if the light is always hitting it. Using a pale nude or yellow toned concealer (or special made products for highlighting) on areas like the bridge of your nose, the ball of your chin, and your center forehead or t-zone. Contouring is a method used to minimize and create depth on your face. Using a darker based concealer (or special made products for contour-ing) on the sides of your nose, cheekbones, and around the top angles of your face. This will give your face more definition, slimming out your face while drawing more attention to the highlighted sections.

Q: My makeup never stays fresh be-cause I have oily skin. How do I keep my face and makeup looking fresh?

A: For oily skin, foundation primers made especially for oily prone skin can prevent oil from developing under your makeup, they can also help to reduce shine. Many companies also make oil wipes that are much cheaper than a primer and that can be taken anywhere and used when you feel necessary. A wipe to your face will pull all oil without taking off any of your makeup.

Q: What are quick fixes to a bad hair day that will still look cute?

A: Headbands and up-do’s can be a girl’s best friend. Try a tight top knot bun to give off a sophisticated look for any attire, or even a messy low bun that will show off a more playful energetic side, a high teased pony tail can be a quick fix for any-thing that might be going on in your day. Headbands can be a great alter-native for someone who just needs a little taming in the front while still giving body and the perfect amount of mess in the back.
