What is the Scientific Revolution?

The time when a new view of the universe was accepted, and new sources of authority based on close observation of natural phenomena and the use of independent human reasoning were embraced.

Antiquated Views of the Universe

Geocentrism – The Earth as the center of the universe.

The earth was the “worst” and lowest point of the universe.

The Heavens were the highest.

Supported theological assumptions.

Modern Views of the Universe

Heliocentrism – The sun as the center of the universe.

Nicholas Copernicus – In 1543, he started the assumption that the earth and the planets moved around the sun.

Quickly denounced by the Catholics and Protestants. Why?

Other Advances in Astronomy

Galileo Galilei – used the newly invented telescope to view the planets. He confirmed Copernicus’ theory.

Sir Isaac Newton – Built on the work of previous scientists and presented a complete picture of the universe, with the solar system held together with gravity.

The Philosophes

The Philosophes were European enlightenment thinkers grappling with new ideas and ushering in the foundation of the social sciences.
