Chapter 2Chapter 2 Epigraph:
Jack London
-1876-1916-Writer and
“Jack”of many trades
• London travelled the Alaskan territory in 1897
• Published in 1906 as a companion to Call of the Wild
• About a dog/wolf hybrid’s travels and adventures in the territory
Why does Krakauer use this epigraph? How does it fit into this chapter? What
does it reveal about McCandless?
• After graduating college, McCandless begins, “an epic journey that would change everything” (22). He saw his time in college as “an absurd and onerous duty” (22). In heading west he felt freed “from the stifling world of his parents and peers, a world of abstraction and security and material excess” (22). Using examples from the reading explain what he meant by this. What do you think of his motivation for leaving?
